At the end of the sixties, in the course of the so-called ‘crisis of modern architecture’ a movement of architectural theoreticians greatly stimulated by Amos Rapoport’s ‘Built Form and Culture’ (1969) began to widen their horizon into the ethnology of architecture. This movement has produced very valuable studies, but now finds itself confronted with methodological problems due to the accumulation of uncoordinated knowledge from all parts of the world. The main problem lies in the fact that architectural research has not yet developed its own method. Most of the studies borrow concepts and approaches from established disciplines like religion, psychology, social anthropology, structuralism, semiotics, and thus import not only the theoretical difficulties that arise within these mother-disciplines, but also create new problems by adapting approaches from one field to another.
In this context another field of research is gaining weight which concentrates on architecture itself. It interprets the term architecture as a generic term in analogy to ‘zoo’ in zoology and defines the field anew in the widest sense of anthropology. In this way two essentially new types of architecture have been discovered, which may make architectural research a valuable member of the circle of anthropological disciplines. Together with the conventional these new types have been grouped into a scheme of four types:
• subhuman architecture (nest-building behaviour of the higher apes: chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan)
• semantic architecture (‘non-domestic buildings’ or buildings not related to the human body with semantic, social and ideological functions)
• domestic architecture (buildings which offer internal space for protection of objects, animals and humans)
• settlement architecture (higher, horizontally structured unity assembling several elements of semantic and/or domestic architecture)

Στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’60, και ενώ η αποκαλούμενη «κρίση της σύγχρονης αρχιτεκτονικής» βρισκόταν σε εξέλιξη, οι θεωρητικοί της αρχιτεκτονικής άρχισαν να διευρύνουν τους ορίζοντές τους και να στρέφονται προς την εθνολογία της αρχιτεκτονικής. Κατ’ επέκταση, η αρχιτεκτονική έρευνα εισάγει όχι μόνο τις θεωρητικές δυσκολίες που προκύπτουν μέσα στους κόλπους των βασικών αυτών επιστημονικών κλάδων, αλλά επίσης δημιουργεί νέα προβλήματα, τα οποία προκύπτουν από το συνδυασμό διάφορων επιστημονικών προσεγγίσεων.
Μέσα στο συγκεκριμένο πλαίσιο, ένα άλλο ερευνητικό πεδίο κερδίζει έδαφος, το οποίο επικεντρώνεται στην ίδια την αρχιτεκτονική. Αποδίδει στον όρο «αρχιτεκτονική» μια ευρύτερη έννοια, ανάλογη με τον όρο «ζωολογικός κήπος» στον κλάδο της ζωολογίας. Έτσι, οριοθετεί εκ νέου το επιστημονικό πεδίο της αρχιτεκτονικής, εντάσσοντάς το στο ευρύτερο πλαίσιο της ανθρωπολογίας. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, προκύπτουν δύο εντελώς νέοι τύποι αρχιτεκτονικής, γεγονός που ίσως συντελέσει στην ένταξη της αρχιτεκτονικής έρευνας στον κύκλο των ανθρωπολογικών επιστημών. Οι νέοι αυτοί τύποι, μαζί με τους ήδη υπάρχοντες, απαρτίζουν ένα διάγραμμα που αποτελείται από τέσσερις τύπους:
• αρχιτεκτονική πιθήκων (δημιουργία φωλιάς από τους ανώτερους πιθήκους:
χιμπατζήδες, γορίλες, ουραγκοτάγκους).
• αρχιτεκτονική των μύθων (κτίσματα μη κατοικήσιμα ή κτίσματα των οποίων η λειτουργία είναι σημασιολογική, κοινωνική και ιδεολογική και δεν εξυπηρετούν τη στέγαση του ανθρώπου).
• αρχιτεκτονική εσωτερικών χώρων (κτίσματα, ο εσωτερικός χώρος των οποίων προσφέρεται για την προστασία αντικειμένων, ζώων και ανθρώπων).
• αρχιτεκτονική οικισμών (υψηλές και οριζόντιες κατασκευές, οι οποίες συνδυάζουν στοιχεία από την αρχιτεκτονική των μύθων και/ή την αρχιτεκτονική εσωτερικών χώρων).

Source text - English A movement at the edge of her peripheral vision made her turn. High up and towards a roped-off area– for parts of the cathedral were closed off to the shuffling visitors – a small bird had somehow penetrated the interior and was flitting from carved ledge to ledge.
Julia, watching its speckled brownness, felt a school-marmish urge to reprove the bird for its unauthorised entry into the famous church. But on the heels of the school-marmishness followed another impulse: a kind of respectful admiration for the audacity of the thing.
As she watched, the sparrow landed on a carved figure in the marble. A face, the Madonna’s face, and in her arms a child. An intense desire to approach closer to the face beset Julia Garnet and she did a think she had never done before in her life: she defied an implicit order and ducked under the prohibiting rope.
No one was about. It was towards the end of the day and the cathedral was preparing to close. The long silver lamps were slowly being switched off. Julia’s eyes, grown accustomed to the dimness, made out a low stool at the foot of the carving. Removing her shoes, she stepped upon it in stockinged feet and stretching up she kissed the marble Madonna’s hand.
That night Julia Garnet slept without pursuant dreams. When she woke sun had made its way through the edges of the shutters and was painting oblique bars upon the walls. Going onto the balcony she felt it warm her shoulders. Although only February the air carried traces of Spring.

Ψηλά, προς το σημείο του ναού όπου υπήρχε περίφραξη με σχοινί, μιας και σε ορισμένα σημεία απαγορευόταν η είσοδος στους επισκέπτες που περιφέρονταν στο χώρο, ένα μικρό πουλί είχε τρυπώσει κατά κάποιο περίεργο τρόπο και φτερούγιζε από τo ένα λαξευμένο περβάζι στο άλλο.
Η Τζούλια, παρακολουθώντας το πιτσιλωτό του φτέρωμα, ένιωσε μια δασκαλίστικη παρόρμηση να το επιπλήξει επειδή είχε εισχωρήσει δίχως άδεια στη φημισμένη εκκλησία. Την αυστηρότητα της δασκάλας, όμως, αντικατέστησε ένα άλλο αυθόρμητο συναίσθημα: ήταν ένα είδος σεβασμού και θαυμασμού για την τόλμη που είχε αυτό το πλάσμα.
Ενώ η Τζούλια παρακολουθούσε, το σπουργίτι προσγειώθηκε σε μια φιγούρα σμιλευμένη στο μάρμαρο. Ήταν ένα πρόσωπο, το πρόσωπο της Μαντόνας, και στα χέρια της κρατούσε ένα παιδί. Now digital TV can penetrate the most rugged terrain
The brave new world of digital television, which allows dozens of channels to be received via existing TV aerials, has a major flaw: there are too many homes that it cannot reach. In Britain, digital terrestrial broadcasters initially planned for their transmissions to be available to 90 per cent of homes. But now the physics of electromagnetic waves is being exploited to make digital TV available to almost as many people as can receive analogue TV signals.
The secret is to use constructive interference to produce strong signals in key areas that are beyond the reach of the main transmitters. Weak relay stations sharing the same frequencies will transmit signals that are timed to interfere constructively to deliver the strongest signals to the most densely populated areas.
By the end of this year, 81 transmitters will provide digital broadcasts that will cover the 90 per cent of Britain’s population that comprised the original target. The broadcasters would like to improve on this to match analogue TV’s 99.4 per cent coverage, but they cannot use ordinary relay transmitters because there are not enough spare frequencies.

Στη Βρετανία, σταθμοί επίγειας ψηφιακής εκπομπής αρχικά σχεδίαζαν να εκπέμπουν σήμα στο 90% των νοικοκυριών. Τώρα όμως αξιοποιούνται οι ιδιότητες των ηλεκτρομαγνητικών κυμάτων, προκειμένου σχεδόν όλοι όσοι λαμβάνουν αναλογικό τηλεοπτικό σήμα να έχουν πρόσβαση και στην ψηφιακή.
Το μυστικό έγκειται στη χρήση ενισχυτικής συμβολής, προκειμένου να δημιουργηθεί δυνατό σήμα σε νευραλγικά σημεία πέρα από την ακτίνα δράσης των βασικών αναμεταδοτών. Σταθμοί αναμετάδοσης με αδύναμο σήμα που εκπέμπουν στις ίδιες συχνότητες θα εκπέμπουν σήματα προγραμματισμένα να συμβάλλουν ενισχυτικά. Έτσι, οι πιο πυκνοκατοικημένες περιοχές θα λαμβάνουν τα πιο δυνατά σήματα.
Μέχρι το τέλος της χρονιάς, ψηφιακές εκπομπές από 81 πομπούς θα καλύψουν το 90% του βρετανικού πληθυσμού, όπως ήταν άλλωστε και ο αρχικός στόχος. Οι αναμεταδότες θα πρέπει να βελτιωθούν, προκειμένου να αγγίξουν το 99,4%, δηλαδή το ποσοστό εμβέλειας που έχει η αναλογική τηλεόραση.
