I stand amid the Roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold with my hand
Grains of the golden sand
How few! Yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep while I weep!
O, God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O, God! Can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

أرانى هنا وسْطَ هذا الصخبْ
على شاطىءٍ موجُه يصطفقْ
وأحمل فى راحتى
بعض رملٍ
تسرَّب
بين الأناملِ يهوِى بعيدا
وعينى تفيضْ
ألا أستطيعُ بِذَرِّ الرمال التشبُثَ – ربى -
وإحكامَ قبضةُ كفِّى عليها؟
- إلهى – ألا أستطيعُ انتشالَ
برئٍ من الموجة القاسية؟
أكلُّ الذى قد تبدَّى لنا
كان حُلماً يعانقُ حُلمي الجميلْ؟

În zadar suspin şi sufăr
Lângă lacul cel albastru
Încărcat cu flori de nufăr.

وكنتُ كالشطِ لم تزرنى
فعمَّنى اليأسُ يأسُ حيرةْ
وكنتُ كالزنبقات وحدى
بلا حراكٍ على البحيرةْ
