Source text - Latin De Gravitatione et aequipondio fluidorum et solidorum in fluidis scientiam duplici methodo tradere convenit. Quatenus ad scientias Mathematicas pertinet, aequum est ut a contemplatione Physica quam maxime abstraham. Et hac itaque ratione singulas ejus propositiones e principijs abstractis et attendenti satis notis, more Geometrarum, stricte demonstrare statui. Deinde cum hac doctrina ad Philosophiam naturalem quodammodo affinis esse censeatur, quatenus ad plurima ejus Phaenomena enucleanda accommodatur, adeoque cum usus ejus exinde prasertim elucescat et principiorum certitudo fortasse confirmetur, non gravabor propositiones ex abundanti experimentis etiam illustrare: ita tamen ut hoc laxius disceptandi genus in Scholia dispositum, cum priori per Lemmata, propositiones et corallaria tradito non confundatur.
Fundamenta ex quibus hac scientia demonstranda est sunt vel definitiones vocum quarundam; vel axiomata et postulata a nemine non concedenda. Et hac e vestigio tradam.
Translation - Bulgarian Подходящо е науката за гравитацията и равновесието на флуидите и твърдите тела във флуиди да се изложи по един двустранен метод. Доколкото тя се отнася към математическите науки, справедливо се полага да я абстрахирам във възможно най-голяма степен от физическо разглеждане. По тази причина аз реших да докажа строго и следвайки начина на геометрите отделните положения на тази наука от абстрактни принципи, достатъчно добре познати на специалистите. От друга страна, аз няма да се колебая да изяснявам нейните положения с голямо количество опити, първо, защото тази теория може да се смята по някакъв начин за близка до природната философия, доколкото е удобно средство за разбиране на същността на много нейни феномени, и второ, защото чрез опитите ползата, която тя дава, ще стане съвсем явна и сигурността на принципите ѝ вероятно ще се затвърди. Но все пак аз ще направя така, че този по-свободен вид разискване, изложен в схолии, да не се бърка с предишния вид, който е представен в леми, теореми и следствия.
Основите, от които тази наука трябва да се изведе и докаже, са или дефинициите на някои думи, или аксиоми и постулати, които не могат да бъдат отречени от никого. Сега ще се заема с тяхното излагане.
