Translation - English Main Idea: Codeswitching among bilingual family members can be used to impersonate real life authority figures and envision one’s own future image. For example, a Hispanic girl who aspires to be a Supreme Court judge will switch to English when talking to family members about her future ambition. For this type of code-identity relationship to happen, codeswitching must not be linguistically motivated or anchored. In other words, the girl has not switched to English because her interlocutors did not understand Spanish. Traditionally, codeswitching in bilingual conversations has been viewed as establishing “we-code/they-code”, contextualization of conversation, and sending marked and unmarked signals, establishing rights and obligations. The author argues that all these views are interactional and linguistically anchored, but there are times when code alternations happen for non-verbal and non-interactional purposes. In these instances, code alternation ceases to be a switch and becomes a medium of exchange whether it is in one language, the other, or a combination of both. To support her argument, the author defines identity building as co-constructed and intersubjective, i.e., identity is not built in isolation of the surrounding environment or the other identities the individual already possesses. Conversation analysis (CA) discovers only the role of codeswitching in turn taking and is not enough to analyze the role of codeswitching in identity building, which is a social interaction. The author argues that CA must be grounded in membership categorization analysis (MCA) and coupled with ethnographic data to discover the role of codeswitching in identity building. She defines membership categorization as the social context of the conversation and the ethnographic data as the linguistic ideology of the society as a whole. In other words, she argues that when codeswitching is not linguistically oriented it cannot be analyzed in isolation from the context of the conversation and the larger linguistic environment of the society. The study is an ethnography and discourse analysis of Farsi/Azerbaijani female family members’ conversations in Tehran, Iran. The first set of data shows that the participants conducted most their conversation in Azerbaijani but they switched to Farsi, majority and authority language, when they wanted to defy a local Azerbaijani religious authority figure (preacher) and Azerbaijani family authority member (mother-in-law). The second set of data shows female family members discussing future business venture. The whole conversation was carried out in Azerbaijani. However, when one of the participants wanted to convince her Azerbaijani interlocutors that her business model could be successful, she switched to Farsi, the language of affluence in her view and the view of the society she lives in. According to the author, none of the participant needed to switch to Farsi because her interlocutors did not understand Azerbaijani. The switches did not have any linguistic motivation; therefore, the reason behind them must be identity formation. Related Reading: Conversation Analysis is the study of the mechanics of conversation. It studies how interlocutors engage in turn taking, repair misunderstanding, and keep the conversation flowing or try to end. Unlike ethnographers who try to become familiar with the participants and their setting so they can interpret their behaviors, conversation analysts try to find salient clues in the conversation regardless of the macro and micro contexts of the participants (Ortega 2009, pp 227-229).

Source text - English The effect of consumer perception of store attributes on apparel store preference Discount stores, in particular, should be alerted to the findings of this study, which suggest that customers are willing to swap store services for lower prices. Discount retailers, however, should proceed cautiously, and keep in mind that the appeal of merchandise to customers is overwhelmingly influenced by store desirability. Discount stores that are promoting designer names and fashion-forward merchandise seem to be on the right track, but consumer perceptions regarding the lack of appealing merchandise at discount stores continues to be an obstacle to overcome. Retailers should be sensitive to the education levels of their customers. The more educated the customer base, the more selective one’s customer may be. While education levels are independent of family income and individual purchasing power, this area would benefit from further exploration. For customers seeking apparel merchandise, the type of clothing preferred by the customer is a key attribute contributing to store preference. Customer expectations of merchandise selection differ among store types, and customer expectations likely play a large role in satisfaction with store selection. Apparel store retailers may benefit from the disconfirmation theory that relates consumer satisfaction as a function of how well expectations fit with actual experiences.
