Source text - Arabic في البداية يجب أن ننوّه هنا إلى أن نجاح تونس دون غيرها من البلدان العربية في تحقيق الثورة الديمقراطية يعود بكل تأكيد إلى عدد من الخصائص التي يتمتع بها المجتمع التونسي، وعلى رأسها نمو أو اتساع الطبقة الوسطى في المجتمع التونسي، وازدياد نسبة التعليم الثانوي والجامعي. كما تعدّ تونس في مقدمة البلدان التي ترتفع فيها نسبة المواطنين الذين يملكون منازل خاص بهم، إذ تفوق هذه النسبة الــ75 بالمئة، وهذه السياسة تعود بالتأكيد إلى سنوات الرئيس السابق الحبيب بورقيبة. وهناك أيضاً دور فاعل للمرأة التونسية التي تشارك في الحياة العامة والسياسية بشكل فعّال، كما ترتفع نسبة المتحثين باللغة الأجنبية داخل المجتمع التونسية، وهي هنا اللغة الفرنسية. وفوق ذلك، تتميّز تونس بقرب النخبة التونسية فيها من فرنسا، واستفادتها بشكل كبير من جامعاتها ومؤسساتها التعليمية؛ كل ذلك وغيره من المعطيات يدفعنا إلى التأكيد أن التحول الديمقراطي في تونس سيكون مستقراً بنسب أعلى ومضموناً أكثر مما سيحدث في بلدان أخرى، مثل مصر والجزائر واليمن
Translation - English Tunisia’s sole success among Arab states in achieving a democratic revolution is down to several characteristics of its society. First and foremost, Tunisia has an expanding middle class, high levels of secondary and university education, and one of the highest levels of private home ownership in the world at over 75%, a policy that goes back to former President Habib Bourguiba. Furthermore, Tunisian women play an active role in public and political life, and the country also has a large proportion of foreign language speakers, in this case French. Moreover, Tunisia’s elite is closely bound with France, and has benefited immensely from its universities and educational establishments. These and other facts lead us to the assertion that the democratic transformation in Tunisia will hold much firmer than in other countries such as Egypt, Algeria or Yemen.

إن تسارع كل هذه التطورات العملاقة في القارة الأوروبية أدت إلى بروز اتجاهات ثقافية
وسياسية في كل أنحاء هذه القارة الصغيرة، معادية للتقدم وللتغييرات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي حصلت بشكل متسارع، خاص ًة في القرن التاسع عشر. وقد برز في الثقافة الألمانية بشكل خاص، وإنما أيضًا في الثقافة الفرنسية تيارات أدبية وفكرية وشعرية تظهر الحنين الكبير إلى التراتبيات الاجتماعية والسياسية القديمة، إي عهد الملكيات والإمارات والإقطاع والحياة الريفية التقليدية المستقرة، وكذلك آليات التعاضد الاجتماعي ما قبل العهد الصناعي التي كانت تؤمن لحمة المجتمع.
ومما لا شك فيه ان المثقفين العرب الذين درسوا اللغات الأوروبية واستمتعوا بأدبياتها واطلعوا على التيارات الفلسفية الكبرى، بشكل خاص التيارات الرافضة للتقدم الصناعي والديمقراطي، قد تأثروا أيضًا بهذه التيارات الثقافية والسياسية "الرجعية" الطابع، إي التي ُتظهر الحنين إلى زمن وّلى دون رجعة. ولا عجب إذن أن ُيدخل هؤلاء المثقفون جدلية الأصالة والحداثة التي كانت تمزق الفكر الأوروبي، في الفكر العربي الذي كان يجابه تحدي الحداثة الأوروبية وتفوقها. لذلك أخذ مفهوم الحداثة طابعًا ملتبسًا يثير الإعجاب والتوق إلى الحصول على محتوياتها طورًا، ويثير الرفض

Translation - English The significant and rapid developments on the European continent led to the emergence of cultural and political trends adverse to the accelerating social and economic changes, especially in the nineteenth century. In German and French culture most particularly there emerged literary, intellectual and poetic currents portraying a deep yearning to the old political and social hierarchies, that is, the age of monarchies, princedoms, feudalism, the traditional, stable rural life and the mechanisms of social solidarity of the pre-industrial age once believed to be the yoke of society.
The Arab intellectuals who studied European languages, revelled in their literatures and examined the major European philosophical trends, especially those opposed to industrial and democratic progress, were no doubt also influenced by those cultural and political currents of a ‘reactionary’ nature, that is, those yearning for a time long since passed. It is no wonder then that Arab intellectuals entered the debate on tradition and modernity which had ravaged European thought, and now found themselves confronted with the challenge of European modernity and its superiority. The concept of modernity thus took on a dubious nature, arousing wonder and envy at times, and rejection and disgust at other times in the face of superior Europeans encroaching on Arab territory.

I am a freelance translator with an MA in Applied Translation Studies in Arabic>English from the Centre for Translation Studies, University of Leeds. Before that I obtained a degree in Arabic and German at the University of Exeter, and spent a year studying Arabic in Damascus, Syria.
I have worked for a major language services provider as translation Project Manager on bio-sciences projects, before moving to Libya and then Tunisia to work on on higher education and society projects for the British Council.
My translation clients thus far have included major online entertainment and film magazine, an economics news website, and British exam boards administering exams in Arabic within the UK or the Middle East.
Currently I am the Middle East Officer of a London university and travel to the region around 8 times per year. I have visited almost every country in the Middle East and am intimately familiar with the cultural intricacies that play an important role in understanding and Arabic. I am working part-time as a translator.
