Johannesburg is the capital city of South Africa, which is also referred to as Jo'burg, Egoli or Jozi. It is also the capital of Gauteng province, having various districts like Central Johannesburg, Soweto, Sandton, Randburg and Roodepoort. People of different religions and races live in Johannesburg, whose beliefs and traditions are reflected in the city's culture.

The city has a pleasant weather, with moderate rainfall and average temperature around 24° Celsius in summers and 13° Celsius in winters. Johannesburg is well connected to the rest of the world by several flights. From the O.R.Tambo International Airport, one can take a taxi or hire a car to reach the main city.

Johannesburg is the financial hub of South Africa. Hillbrow Tower and Brixton Tower exemplify the city's urbanisation and modernisation. Tourists visiting the city have many accommodation options to choose from. One can opt for three to five star hotels, or business and leisure hotels as well as various budget and mid-range hotels.

Johannesburg is the economical, cultural and social hub of the country, where one can live, work and party. For sightseeing one can visit museums like Museum Africa, Ditsong Military Museum and Apartheid Museum, dedicated to the history and heritage of the city. Other popular sightseeing options include Constitution Hill Museum, The Origins Centre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg Zoo and Gandhi Square, among many others.

Johannesburg has over ten million trees. The city is referred to as the biggest man-made forest in the world. It has over 2,000 city parks and gardens that welcome nature lovers and tourists from all parts of the globe. One can catch a glimpse of the African safari and wildlife at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve and the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.

Complete day tour, half day tours and other options for excursions are available. These include Mystery Ghost Bus Tour, visit to Gold Reef City as well as tours to Soweto and Lesedi Village, among others.

The city also has numerous churches and temples built in the early 20th century, which also attract large number of tourists. The Radium Beer Hall, SAB World of Beer, Monsoon Lagoon and Cafax are some of the busiest eating places, famous for drinking. The city is also famous for its nightlife.

Johannesburg is a shopper's paradise where one can shop for anything, ranging from traditional African items to clothes, jewellery, accessories and electronics. One can go to 44 Stanley, Oriental Plaza, Westgate or any other city mall for shopping.

The malls have branded clothing and accessory stores, book shops, music galleries and food restaurants. Reminiscence, The Bead Shop, West End Blanket Centre, Collectors Treasury, Tapenade Olive Shop and KwaZulu Muti–Shop are great shopping venues.

Tourists can opt for metro rail for travelling within the city. Although the minibus taxis appear to be comparatively cost-effective, it is better to avoid travelling in these taxis unless travelling in a group.

Even if one has hired a car, areas like Alexandra, Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville should be avoided. It is best to visit Soweto in only organised tours as some localities of this place have higher crime rates and are not considered to be safe for tourists. Before going out, visitors should enquire with the hotel staff and the guides about the locations and time to visit.

ENEWS Dave Lilly celebrates 44 years’ service to the explosives industry

Dave Lilly is known as a legend in the explosives industry. Through a combination of research, focus on the customer, leadership and a wealth of knowledge, Dave helped advance the science of blasting by introducing statistical analysis so it is now an integral part of the mining productivity value chain.

Dave’s passion for blasting has never waned as he continued to evolve and refine his research to offer the best solution for Dyno Nobel customers. Dave was quoted as saying, “My passion is to quantify the relationship between blasting parameters, procedures and techniques and tie it to the final results expected by the mining industry. By using basic statistical techniques, blast reports and mine productivity data, we can find profitable optimisation solutions for problems at real site specific mining operations. The cooperative development and discovery of, sometimes, non-intuitive optimisation solutions can be extremely exciting when the results are verified in the field.”

Dave Lilly readily shares his research and knowledge with others in the field. Whether the venue is the esteemed Oxford Business & Economic Forum in London, or an annual SME Conference, Dave’s research is relevant to understanding the science of blasting and its pivotal role in a mine’s value chain.

In addition to his numerous presentations, Dave has co-authored several research papers including: Aggregate Size Optimization at Lafarge’s Ravena Plant; A Blasters Tool to Measure Fragmentation published in the Jan/Feb 2009 ISEE Journal; Reduction of Blasting Related Mining Process Variability accepted at the 2010 Oxford Business & Economic Conference; The Use of Principle Components Analysis to Integrate Blasting into the Mining Process at the 2009 Oxford Business and Economic Forum; CUSUM for the Control of Vibration and Airblast. Most recently, Dave presented his paper entitled, Statistical Integration of Blasting into Appalachia Coal Mining, at the 2011 Society of Mining Engineers Annual Conference, and at the 2012 Institute International Society of Explosives Engineers, he presented Aggregate Size Optimization.

Dave has always given back to the industry and generously shared his knowledge and his time. He is past Chairman of the Institute Makers of Explosives Technical Committee, a member of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, and he founded the Volunteer Medical Engineering Chapter in Wilmington Delaware in cooperation with the University of Delaware A.I Dupont Institute and the Professional Engineering Society.

Dave Lilly joined the DynoConsult Group as a Senior Consulting Engineer after 39 years’ experience with Dupont-ETI in sales and marketing, product management, safety and regulatory affairs, consulting, human resources, plant management, and international and domestic customer service. He has worked the past five years for Dyno Nobel within the DynoConsult group as a Senior Consulting Engineer. He utilised his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, his MBA, and registered Professional Engineer experience to Challenge the Status Quo on the way Dyno Nobel provides value to our customers. Dave’s expertise will be sorely missed by the industry and his many loyal customers and friends.

Dave and his wife, Karen, were treated to a surprise afternoon at the race track where they made a couple of laps around the NASCAR track, followed by a dinner celebrating Dave’s 44 years of service and his remarkable contributions to the mining industry.

Selain telah menghasilkan sederet materi presentasi, Dave juga pernah ikut menjadi anggota tim penulis beberapa materi riset seperti: Aggregate Size Optimization at Lafarge’s Ravena Plant, A Blaster’s Tool to Measure Fragmentation yang diterbitkan dalam Jurnal Riset ISEE edisi Januari / Februari 2009, Reduction of Blasting Related Mining Process Variability yang diterima pada Oxford Business & Economic Conference tahun 2010, The Use of Principle Components Analysis to Integrate Blasting into the Mining Process pada Oxford Business and Economic Forum tahun 2009, serta CUSUM for the Control of Vibration and Airblast.

Hormat kami,

X

Dear Mr. X,

In relation to the apparent foul smell that has been causing inconveniences to work activities on the 3rd floor in the past few days, we would like to inform you that the cause of this nuisance appears to be the melamine finishing / coating project that has been in progress on the 2nd floor. The fume from this project hence seeps into the air conditioning ducts of the building and spread throughout.

In trying to overcome this, the Building Management has given a written warning to the contractor currently undertaking the project in the 2nd floor (attached), specifically urging them to discontinue their coating work, even after office hours or in the evenings. We have also sealed the air ducts on the 2nd floor that may have been the access points for the fume to enter the building’s central air conditioning system.

We believe this information will serve as a relief for you.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. X,

In relation to the renovation work that your workers are undertaking on the 2nd floor of the Plaza City View Building, I would like to bring your prompt attention to the following matters:

1. The Melamine finishing / coating process must be done outside the building, even if it is being done in the evening. The fume from this process has been causing a rather nauseating smell that has apparently been disturbing other tenants in the building during the past few days.

2. We have also received several complaints from the other tenants in the building and from our own cleaning service division, all of which state that the renovation project has also caused the lobby area to appear dirty and unpleasant, largely due to gypsum dust buildup and footstep stains coming from the lobby stairs leading to the 2nd floor. Therefore, we suggest your workers only use the back emergency exit doors as their sole entry and access point.

3. We would greatly appreciate your cooperation in trying to lessen all inconveniences caused by this project.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Brief Intro About Me

I am a native speaker of Indonesian residing in Jakarta, Indonesia. Despite completing my tertiary education with a bachelor's degree in industrial management and engineering, I have always nurtured great interest in the English language. So much so that nearly all of my 18-year professional experiences have been gained in this particular field.

I first started working in 1998 as an English teacher and have gained more than 16 years of extensive experience in this line of work, from teaching general English to school-aged learners, to teaching TOEFL Preparation Courses and business English to employees and adults.

Due to the relatively high exposure to translation assignments, I naturally developed interest as well in this line of work, beginning to take up translation professionally two years ago. As my skills and experience mounts, so are the number, type, and variety of linguistic jobs I have completed. This includes translation, transcreation, voice-over, subtitling, copy-writing, and trancription, all of which were in the language pairs of English to Indonesian and Indonesian to English. Now, a significant portion of my previous jobs can easily be viewed all over the internet.

My stature as a professional translator is further recognized when in 2011 I was accepted as a full member of The Association of Indonesian Translators (Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia). With this distinguished credential, along with the previous successful linguistic projects I have under my belt, I shall strive to provide top-of-the-line language solutions that will meet, even exceed, customers' expectations.
