Blodomloppet är uppdelat i två från varandra skilda kretslopp. I lilla kretsloppet eller lungkretsloppet pumpas syrefattigt blod från hjärtat till lungorna, där det syresätts och återvänder till hjärtat. Härifrån pumpas det syrerika blodet ut i stora kretsloppet eller systemkretsloppet till kroppens alla organ, där syre och näring avges och avfallsprodukter upptas, innan blodet återvänder till hjärtat för att på nytt komma ut i lungkretsloppet.
Artärerna som seder blodet från hjärtat har kraftiga, muskelrika väggar för att jämna ut det tryck som uppkommer vid hjärtats sammandragningar. Aorta är kroppens största artär. Den har en inre diameter av omkring 30 mm. Aorta avger under sitt lopp större artärgrenar, som i sin tur förgrenar sig i alt mindre artärer. De små artärerna mynnar ut i nätverk av kapillärer som är mycket fina och har tunna, porösa väggar som medger utbytet av syre, näringsämnen och avfallsprodukter mellan blodet och de omgivande vävnaderna. Blood circulation takes place in two separate cycles. In lung circulation, the smaller cycle, oxygen-poor blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs where it is oxygen enriched and returned back to the heart. From the heart, oxygen-rich blood is pumped through the larger, systemic circulation to the body's organs. Oxygen and nutrients are delivered via circulating blood and waste products are taken up after which the blood returns to the heart to again be pumped to the lungs.
The arteries that transport blood from the heart have thick, muscular walls to absorb pressure from the heart's contractions. The aorta, whose inner diameter is about 30 mm, is the body's largest artery. It branches into large arteries which branch into progressively smaller arteries until they open out into a network of fine capillaries. Capillaries have thin, porous walls allowing for the exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste between blood and the surrounding tissue. The capillaries merge to form small veins, which become progressively larger veins and convey blood back to the heart. Veins have thin walls and lack muscle tissue. |

Strax före elva var han tillbaka i sin villa igen. Celina hade gått hem. Han drack en kopp kaffe och et glas vatten. Sedan gick han upp till sitt arbetsrum på andra våningen. Utsikten över havet var hänförande. Men han drog för gardinerna. Bäst trivdes han i den afrikanska skymningen. Eller när de mjuka gardinerna höll solen borta från hans känsliga ögon. Han satte på sin dator och började nästan mekaniskt gå igenom alla rutiner.
Någonstans inne i den elektroniska världen tickade en osynlig klocka. Den hade Falk skapat åt honom efter hans instruktioner. Nu var det söndagen den 12 oktober, bara åtta dagar kvar tills det var dags.
Vid kvart över elva var han färdig med sina kontroller.
Han skulle just slå av datorn när han stelnade till. En liten ljusfläck hade plötsligt börjat blinka i ett av skärmens hörn. Impulsen var regelbunden, två korta, en lång, två korta. Han tog fram den manual Falk hade utarbetat och letade sig fram till den rätta koden.
Först trodde han att han såg fel. Sedan insåg han att det inte var ett misstag. Någon hade just tagit sig igenom det yttersta lagret av säkerhetskoder i Falks dator i Sverige. I den lilla staden Ystad som Carter bara hade sett fotografier från.
Han stirrade på skärmen och trodde inte sina ögon. Falk hade garanterat att ingen skulle kunna ta sig genom säkerhetssystemen.
Ändå var det tydligt att någon hade lyckats.

The view across the sea was ravishing, but he closed the curtains. He was happiest in the African twilight. Or else when the soft curtains blocked the sun from his sensitive eyes. He turned on his computer and began to almost mechanically go through all the routines.
Somewhere in the electronic world an invisible clock was ticking. Falk had created it for him according to his instructions. Today was Sunday, October 12th. Only twelve days left and then it would be time.
Near a quarter after eleven he had finished his tests.
He was just about to switch off the computer when he stopped. A tiny blip had suddenly begun blinking in one corner of the screen. The pattern was steady: two short, one long, two short. He took out the manual Falk had drafted and searched for the right code. At first he thought he was mistaken. Then he realized he wasn't. Someone had just gotten through the outermost layer of security codes on Falks computer in Sweden. In that little town Ystad that Carter had only seen pictures of. He stared at the screen and didn't believe his eyes. Falk had guaranteed that no one would be able to get through the security system. Obviously, someone had succeeded. |
