History of Italy

The name "Italy" comes from Ancient Rome. The Romans called the southern Italian peninsula Italy, which means “land of oxen" or "land of pastures."

This region greatly influenced the cultural and social development of all Mediterranean Europe and had a major influence on European culture. Important cultures and civilizations existed in that region from prehistoric times. Important civilizations include Greater Greece and the Etruscan civilization, which dominated this part of the world for many centuries and, especially, the Roman Empire, which extended its borders over most of the European Continent, North Africa, and the Middle East.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, the Italian province was ruled by a series of barbarian kings, until the 6th century, when the Pontifical States were created with its capital in Rome, under the rule of the Catholic Church.

In 776, Lombardy was conquered by Charlemagne, who was crowned Emperor of Lombardy and the Holy Roman-Germanic Empire in 800 by Pope Leo III.

After starting off this Tuesday’s trading session in positive territory, the Ibovespa lost strength in the afternoon and closed with a loss of 0.40%, at 51,625 points, on a financial volume of R$ 7.3 billion. The negative sentiment surfacing in the face of concerns over a possible military incursion into Syria limited investors’ appetite for risk, helping to overshadow the better than expected indicators in the United States. The Brazilian market, however, moved in the opposite direction of major North American exchanges, which closed in positive territory despite losing strength throughout the session. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.16% and the S&P 500 closed up by 0.43%. Significant resistance developing close to 52,500 points also contributed to profit-taking, the first drop in the last 5 trading sessions, driving away a small number of new purchases at this price level.
