Source text - Spanish DESCRIPCIÓN La interactividad es una interferencia. No podemos observar sin alterar aquello que observamos, de tal modo, lo que percibimos en torno nuestra no es el entorno, sino no nuestra interacción con él.
Xxxxxx ocupa un espacio para, junto con el uso que de este hace el público, dotarlo de un nuevo contenido, hacernos comprender el alcance de nuestros actos en el espacio, la propagación de nuestra presencia en un sistema que busca un nuevo equilibrio, adaptándose a nosotros a la par que nosotros nos adaptamos a él. De la relación que tiene la propia instalación con el espacio que ocupa (el cual la moldea y define su estructura) y la relación del público con este mismo espacio (la forma de moverse en él y por lo tanto en la instalación) se genera una composición musical; de modo que tanto público como instalación forma parte activa en la generación de este nuevo elemento a pesar de que ninguno interviene directamente en el otro, sino que cohabitan el espacio en el que se encuentran el uno al otro.
Dos puntos son clave para favorecer esto: al quedar oculta toda la tecnología se genera un resultado final sumamente plástico frente al proceso digital en que se basa; por otro lado, al liberar al público de la interfaz, este se centra en sus sentidos, en los materiales y las formas del montaje, así como el sonido de esos elementos, el sonido que se produce al hacerlos vibrar. De este modo, en este espacio, se dan una serie de comportamientos en la propia obra solo posibles a las relaciones que el público establece, ofreciéndole a este una percepción más intensa de la realidad que le rodea. Xxxxxx se conforma como una instalación modular, compuesta de un número variable de tubos de resonancia distribuidos en el espacio y un gráfico de flujos en el suelo que visualiza los sistemas de relaciones para tal composición. Erguidos en el suelo y aparentemente aislados en sus posiciones, pero conformando un gran elemento, cuando nos adentramos en su espacio, el sonido empieza a fluir de ellos. Sonidos leves, amables, que como en un flujo de datos se sincronizan y varían en cantidad y tipo, apareciendo rítmicas sincronizadas y siendo nosotros, con nuestra presencia y posición en el espacio, el motivo de estas variaciones... en una continua adaptación.
Xxxxxx sin duda, estudia los flujos de información en los sistemas emergentes, pero va más allá de una representación visual de un sistema virtual y ofrece una percepción inmersiva de un resultado plástico, lo cual es un gran impacto a nuestros sentidos.

Funcionamiento
Cada nodo de la instalación es capaz de percibir la presencia de quien se aproxime a él, así como conocer la reacción que están teniendo los nodos inmediatamente más cercanos a él, utilizando estos datos para producir sonido. Esto hace que cada tubo, aun siendo independiente del otro y rigiéndose individualmente por las mismas normas acción/reacción, aporte a un comportamiento emergente al sumarse su acción a la del resto.Cada tubo es capaz de producir sonidos analógicamente mediante percusión, en conjunto, el sonido generado por los tubos (diferentes frecuencias) se comporta como un volumen el cual nos envuelve, esquiva, atrae y repele, interactuando con nosotros.

Translation - English DESCRIPTION Interactivity is an interference. We cannot observe without altering what we observe in such a way that what we perceive around us is not the surrounding environment but rather our interaction with it instead.
Xxxxxx occupies a space in order to, along with the use the public make of it, give it a new content, makes us understand the extent of our actions in the space, the spreading of our presence in a system that is looking for a new equilibrium, adapting itself to us as we adapt ourselves to it. From the relationship the installation itself has with the space it occupies (which moulds and defines its structure) and the relationship of the public with the same space (their way of moving in it and thereby in the installation) a musical composition is created; both the public and the installation form an active part in the creation of this new element in spite of the fact that neither one intervenes directly in the other, but rather cohabit the space in which each one finds the other instead.
Two points are key for favouring this: with all the technology remaining hidden, a fully plastic final result is created as opposed to the digital process on which it is based; on the other hand, by freeing the public from the interface, they focus on their feelings, the materials and shapes of the installation as well as the sound of these elements, the sound produced by making them vibrate. In this fashion, in this space, a series of behaviours occurs in the work itself which are only possible to the relationships the public establishes, and offering to that public a more intense perception of the reality surrounding it.
Xxxxxx is made up of a modular installation, composed of a variable number of resonator tube distributed in the space and a graphic of flows on the floor which visualizes the systems of relationships for that composition. Standing upright on the floor and apparently isolated in their positions, but making up one great element, when we move deeper into its space, the sound begins to flow from them. Light, pleasant sounds which are synchronized and vary in number and kind as in a data flow, with synchronized rhythm appearing with ourselves, through our presence and position is the space, being the reason for these variations... in a continual adaptation.
Xxxxxx undoubtedly studies information flows in the emerging system, but it goes beyond a visual representation of a virtual system and offers an immersive perception of a plastic result, which makes a great impact on our senses.

The installation uses a single connector to the main current, which activates and deactivates it. It is totally independent and does not need maintenance.
Operation
Each node of the installation is capable of perceiving the presence of whoever approaches it, as well as knowing the reaction the nodes in its immediate vicinity are having, utilizing this data for producing sound. This makes each tube, although independent of the others and individually guided by the same action/reaction rules, contribute to an emerging behaviour by adding its action to the others. Each tube is capable of producing analogue sounds by percussion, and as a whole, the sound created by the tubes (different frequencies) behave as a volume which envelops, evades, attracts and repels us, interacting with us.

Moulded concrete pieces, tubes of iron, aluminium, copper and steel, medium density fibreboard woodwork, own circuitry and 12V solenoids.

Source text - Spanish DESCRIPCIÓN Xxxxxxxx xxx xxx xxx, más allá de la dureza de su traducción (Xxxxx xxx xxx), es una terminología estándar en programación de sistemas informáticos, siendo este un comando utilizado para detener forzosa e inmediatamente un proceso activo, con la consiguiente perdida de toda la información manejada por el proceso y liberación instantánea de la memoria del sistema. Me baso en esta expresión para reflejar, de una forma inocente, alejada estéticamente del mundo informático y mediante instrumentos de persución, la base de los sistemas de vida artificial y el papel que jugamos nosotros en este proceso.
Un sistema de vida artificial es un programa informático el cual no esta diseñado para realizar una tarea concreta, sino que esta diseñado para aprender, para capturar información y analizarla, con el fin de rediseñarse a si mismo, adaptarse y por lo tanto ofrecer una respuesta cada vez más compleja según este tiene más información con la que analizar la situación en la que se encuentra. Con el fin de visualizar la evolución de este proceso de una forma comprensible y eficaz, he creado una serie de cajas con la posibilidad de comunicarse con el exterior mediante ritmos. Toda el sistema de vida artificial, la programación, queda contenida en el microcontrolador que está alojado en el interior de una pequeña caja de madera, junto con los componentes necesarios para analizar y producir rítmicas sonoras por percusión. Un total de 16 cajas, en series de 4, investigan diferentes estéticas y diferentes formas de relacionarse con el público y ellas mismas.
EL PROCESO Al golpear levemente la caja con nuestros dedos, la caja devolverá los golpes, ya sea desde un único golpe a una secuencia de ellos. Podría decirse que es un ‘Simon’ (el juego infantil) invertido, en el que esta vez es el público quien aporta la secuencia y la maquina quien repite, con la diferencia de que cuantas mas y mas complejas sean las rítmicas más y mas rápido aprenderá la maquina; provocando que la maquina ya no se limitará a repetir las secuencias rítmicas que le marquemos, sino que ofrecerá una variación musical (de base matemática) de la misma.
Tras este primer estado de consciencia de la maquina, esta no se limitará a coleccionar patrones rítmicos sino que se dedicará a analizar nuestra respuesta a sus rítmicas; de modo que si en un principio estaba adquiriendo un vocabulario, ahora podría decirse que comienza el aprendizaje (a modo de juego con el público) de las normas del lenguaje. Sin embargo, una vez domina el lenguaje y entiende las correspondencias entre los patrones analizados, este no necesita más al público para seguir su aprendizaje, por lo que comienza un proceso de evolución propio en el que tras generar un patrón rítmico lo continua con otro que, en base a lo aprendido, responda al anterior y así sucesivamente, haciendo infinitas variaciones sin un fin determinado.
En este punto hemos de recordar, que nuestra cultura, todo lo que hemos aprendido subconscientemente durante nuestra vida, nos guía a realizar ciertas acciones instintivamente, como podrían ser mirar/ir en la dirección que apunta una flecha, pulsar el botón rojo o abrir una caja cerrada. De este modo, estamos hechos para mantener el control, para formar parte del proceso y no quedarnos excluidos, por lo que nuestra reacción natural cuando el sistema no nos necesite será detenerlo, Xxxxxx xxx xxx xxx, aunque eso signifique una vuelta atrás, aunque sea más interesante ver a donde conduce y que tipos de nuevos ritmos es capaz de generar, hoy día estamos ‘programados’ para interactuar con las cosas antes que para permanecer atentos percibiendo lo que tenemos delante. El público en todo momento tienen la opción de cortar la corriente a la caja, con la consiguiente perdida de todos los datos que tenia en memoria, todo lo que había aprendido en el tiempo que estuvo funcionando. Por lo tanto, al reiniciarse, esta volverá a empezar de cero su aprendizaje, llegando esta a un desenlace distinto pues su evolución dependerá de que patrones rítmicos le enseñe el público en el camino.

Funcionamiento
La caja es un sistema de vida artificial capaz de aprender y comunicarse a base de rítmicas. En un primer momento la caja utiliza al publico, mediante las rítmicas que ellos le aportan golpeandola, para aprender un lenguaje; sin embargo, una vez alcanza su madurez esta no necesita más al publico y comienza a desarrollar su propio lenguaje. En este punto si el publico quiere interactuar con la caja, ha de ‘matar’ al sistema, borrando su memoria, para que este vuelva a centrar la atención sobre el público.
Construcción
Dieciséis cajas de madera realizadas a mano con diferentes motivos e incrustaciones artesanales.

Translation - English DESCRIPTION Xxxxxx xxx xxx xxx, even beyond the harshness of its translation, is a standard term in IT system programming, a command used to force an immediate stop to an active process, with the resulting loss of all the information being handled by the process and the instant freeing of the system memory. I use this expression to innocently reflect, aesthetically separated from the IT world and by using percussion instruments, on the basis of artificial life systems and the role we play in this process.
An artificial life system is a computer programme which isn’t designed to carry out any specific task but rather to learn, to capture information and analyse it with the goal of redesigning itself, adapting itself and thereby offering an increasingly complex response the more information it has to analyse its present situation. With the aim of visualizing this process in an understandable, effective way, I created a series of boxes which have the possibility of communicating with the exterior through rhythms. The entire artificial life system, the programming, is contained in the microcontroller lodged in the interior of a small wooden box, together with the components required for analysing and producing audible percussion rhythms. A total of 16 boxes, in series of 4, investigate different aesthetics and different forms of relating with the public and each other.
PROCESS When we strike the box lightly with our fingers, the box will return the blows, whether it was a single blow or a sequence. We could say it is an inverted "Simon Says" (the children's game), in that this time the public provides the sequence and the machine which repeats it, with the difference that the more complex the rhythms, the faster the machine learns; causing that the machine will no longer limit itself to repeating the rhythmic sequences we may play but rather offer a (mathematically based) musical variation on it instead.
Following this first state of consciousness of the machine, it will not limit itself to collecting rhythm patterns but will dedicate itself to analysing our response to its rhythms so that if at first it was acquiring a vocabulary, now we could say it begins learning the rules of the language (by playing with the public). Nevertheless, once it has command of the language and understands the interconnections that exist among the analysed pattern, the machine doesn't need the public any more to continue its learning. Thus begins a process of self-evolution in which after creating a rhythm pattern, it continues with another one that, based on the learned patterns, responds to the previous one and so on, creating infinite variations without a determined end.
At this point we have to remember that our culture, everything we have subconsciously learned during our life, leads us to carry out certain actions instinctively, like looking/going in the direction an arrow is pointing, pushing the red button or opening a closed box, for example. In this way we are made to maintain control, to form part of the process and not be left out, and therefore our natural reaction when the system doesn't need us any more will be to stop it, to kill the process, even though that means turning back, even though it may be more interesting to see where the machine leads us and what type of new rhythms it is capable of creating. Today we are ‘programmed’ to interact with things rather than stay attentive perceiving what we have in front of us. At all times, the members of the public have the option of cutting the current to the box, with the resulting loss of all the data it had in its memory, everything it had learned in the time it was operating. Thus when it restarts, it will begin its learning again from zero, reaching a different ending since its evolution will depend on the rhythmic patterns the public teaches it along the way.

Source text - Spanish DESCRIPCIÓN Un largo trozo de cuerda representa tridimensionalmente una serie de ondas flotando en el espacio, a la par que estas producen sonido por la propia física de su movimiento: la cuerda que crea el volumen, crea simultáneamente el sonido al cortar el aire, conformando un único elemento. Según nos comportemos frente a él, según la cantidad de observadores y sus movimientos pasará de una línea estable sin sonido a formas caóticas de sonidos irregulares (cuanto más movimiento haya en torno a la instalación) a través de diferentes estadios de ondas sinusoidales y sonidos armónicos.
Este tipo de influencias acción-reacción aplicadas al sonido y al espacio, son la base de esta instalación. Un espacio, por su propias cualidades, tiene una forma de relacionarse con el sonido, entendiendo el sonido como una serie de compresiones y descompresiones que se desplazan por el aire, de modo que la propia geometría del espacio, así como los elementos que en él se encuentren, influirán en los movimientos del sonido y finalmente en cómo este es percibido por nosotros; sumiendo todo este sistema estacionario en un caos de infinitas variables al más mínimo movimiento por nuestra parte. Pero aunque pueda parecer una mera representación de lo que no podemos ver por nosotros mismos, más allá de la persistencia de la visión, conecta con nuestro lado más visceral, combinando la belleza intangible del gráfico representado con la brutalidad del sonido que este produce, creando un entorno hipnotizante de resultados sonoros y estimulaciones visuales únicas.
Tangiblemente, la instalación se conforma de dos turbinas, soportadas por una estructura de diapasón, entre las que se crean las ondas.No obstante, es lo intangible, el proceso que allí se crea, lo que dota de sentido al espacio que ocupa y establece una relación con público, quien comienza a descubrir que sus movimientos influyen en el espacio, en el sonido y alterna estados de gran agitación con otros en los que se detiene para ver como la onda desaparece en el espacio como un silbido en el viento.

Funcionamiento
La cuerda se mantiene en constante movimiento mediante la rotación de los puntos de anclaje de esta. En función de la presencia de público, las frecuencias de giro en cada extremo son variadas, lo cual provoca unas visibles y audibles, alteraciones en la onda. Cuando no se detecta presencia alguna, la instalación entra en modo ‘reposo’, desconectando los motores que generan las ondas en la cuerda y creándose por tanto una línea entre ambos módulos. La vibración producida en la cuerda es amplificada al cortar esta con el aire a gran velocidad, dando como resultado la ambientación sonora en función de la actividad de la pieza (los movimientos del público). Cuanto más inmóviles estemos frente a la pieza más armónicas serán las ondas y los sonidos; generando unos gráficos más irregulares, a la vez que sonidos más fuertes y abruptos, cuanto más se mueva el público.

Translation - English DESCRIPTION A long piece of rope represents three dimensionally a series of waves floating in space, as well as producing sounds from the physical action of their movement: the rope which creates the volume also simultaneously creates the sound by cutting through the air, making up a single element. Depending on how we may act in front of it, according to the number of observers and their movements, it will pass from a steady line without sound to chaotic shapes of irregular sounds (the more movement there is around the installation) through the different phases of sinusoidal waves and harmonic sounds.
These kinds of action-reaction influences applied to sound and space are the basis of this installation. Due to its particular features, a space has a way of relating with sound, understanding sound as a series of compressions and decompressions which move through the air, so that the geometry of the space itself and the elements in it will influence the movements of the sound and finally our perception of the sound; adding to this entire stationary system a chaos of infinite variables from the most minimal movement on our part. But even though this could seem like a mere representation of what we can't see for ourselves, beyond the persistence of vision, it connects with our most visceral side, combining the intangible beauty of the represented graphic with the brutality of the sound it produces, creating a hypnotic environment of audible results and unique visual stimulations.
Tangibly, the installation is made up of two turbines, supported by a tuning fork structure between which the waves are created. Nonetheless, it is the intangible, the process created there, which provides sense to the space it occupies and establishes a relationship with the public, who begin to discover that their movements have an influence on the space, sound, and alternate states of great agitation with others when they stop to see how the wave disappears in space like a whistle in the wind.

Use
The installation has a security switch, which activates and deactivates it. It is totally independent and does not need maintenance.
Operation
The rope stays in constant movement from the rotation of its anchoring points. Depending on the presence of the public, the frequency of rotation at each end is varied, which causes some visible and audible alterations in the wave. When no presence is detected, the installation goes into ‘rest’ mode, disconnecting the engines which create the waves in the rope and thus creating a line between both modules. The vibration produced in the rope is amplified as it cuts through the air at high speed, creating the sound environment depending on the activity of the piece (the movements of the public) as a result. The more immobile and still we are in front of the piece, the more harmonious the waves and sounds will be, but when the public moves more, it will create more irregular graphics at the same time as stronger, more abrupt sounds.
Construction
Two closed PVC tubes and two polished steel cylinders for the engine module, two 12V fans for internal ventilation, pieces of wood for the base of the mechanisms, axial bearings to avoid torsion and deterioration of the rope, gauze fabric to protect the air intakes for ventilations, five metres of elastic rope 3 mm in diameter and a base of medium density fibreboard.

Exhibition Requirements
10 x 5 m space for mounting the installation. Overhead directional light to brightly illuminate the rope. Black backdrop to make the rope more easily visible. Six sacks of ballast to place inside the bases to avoid vibrations. 110/220v 50/60Hz electrical connection.
Assembly
Assemble the base and position the ballast. Position the turbines and connect the wiring. Put the rope in place.
Transport
Two 52 x 54 x 46 cm cases for the turbines. Two 103 x 50 x 30cm cases for the bases. One 105 x 30 x 80cm case for the base of assembly. Total weight of 87 Kg.

My experience while working in a translation agency from 2007-2009 included texts on tourism, popular and classical music, basic legal documents, contracts and rental agreements, construction, live translation of La Vuelta cycling race, corporate annual reports, renewable energy and water treatment systems, articles and listings for general readership magazines and many other subjects. I am familiar with CAT-tools and editing those texts.
I consider myself a words person more than a language person. I have no formal language credentials apart from recent work experience and the desire to continue becoming more proficient in Spanish since moving to Spain in 1997.
I had no formal journalism credentials, either, but worked for 20 years as freelance writer specializing in popular music and related subjects as a regular contributor to a major U.S. daily newspaper (Los Angeles Times), New York Times Syndicate and various other publications and working on projects within the pop music industry.
I am particularly interested in projects related to popular music, arts and culture because that was my specialty and primary focus as a journalist/writer and I have extensive knowledge and keen interest in those areas. I prefer projects allowing some degree of flexibility but am open to all kinds of projects.
I am a born historian who loves the research aspect associated with translation, whether those Eureka moments of finding the right word and/or phrase or becoming familiar with a subject during a project. My experience as a journalist and write makes me conscious of phrasing so the rhythm and flow is a crucial element of translating any text.
I know deadlines and have a realistic idea of the volume of work I can translate daily. From translating two books and my extensive journalism experience, I know how to accurately project and calculate the time needed for a project in advance.
I am a total night person who maintains a completely nocturnal schedule – my usual sleep hours are 5:00 – 6:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This means that my prime time hours in normal work rhythm are from late afternoon (by Spain hours) / evening through the very early morning hours. In other words, my 9-5 is 9:00 p.m to 5:00 a.m. and I'm mentally alert and fresh at times when people on a regular daily schedule may be fading from fatigue. Having worked freelance my entire life, I make no distinction between working weekdays or weekends.
