Argos, 14th April, 1824.
My dear B.
LAST night a courier arrived from Athens, with letters for me from Odysseus, Goorhs, Anastatius, and others, stating that they had departed for the congress at Salona, and pressing me to hasten thither. [Vide Appendix, No. 31.] I passed the night in writing and packing, and in the morning waited upon the executive body. They objected to the congress, said that it was not sanctioned by them, but had been promoted by Negris, and finally brought about by me. I told them, that I had urged it at the solicitation of Odysseus, at a time when the government was feeble, and that its object was to form a strong league in favor of good government and vigorous exertions, and to force the Morea to act on similar principles.
I was asked why I had given the press to the Athenians which I had promised to the government? I told them that the press, in its way to die seat of government, had been Seized at Napoli; that knowing that Pano knowing that would not allow this battery to be turned upon himself, especially at so many of his faction had been wounded by the one established at Misaolonghi, I had given it to the people of Athens, and had prevailed upon Goorha, the Prefect Lambro, Sophianopulo, and other friends of Colocotroni, to write to Pano to deliver it up.
By these means I had obtained the press; Goorha and Odysseus had pledged their words that it should be free, and Professor Psylas, a friend of the government and of liberty, was engaged to write for it Owing to the probability of Athens being blockaded, I should send the press for the present to Aegina , the Prefect of which island is under the influence of the government I said, that if tins maneuvre did not satisfy them, I must go to Salona, watch the tactics of Negris and Mavrocordato, and endeavor in future to be more skillful They smiled, approved, and gave me their dispatches.
Argos, like all the other towns of Greece, is in ruins. I called on Flesas, archimandrite and minister of the interior. He is a shrewd man, was one of the plotters of the revolution, and has served much as a soldier-Almost every captain has tome priests among his soldiers, and they are only distinguished from the others by their beards. Flesas's brother is blockading Tripolitsa. His name is Niketas. Another general of the same name, and famed for this martial virtue, came out of the town and implored him not to injure his fellow-soldiers and citizens, and attempted to embrace him.
The other desired him to return to his duties, to give up the town to the government, and not to approach, or he would attack him. Again he approached in amity. The stern soldier drew his sword. The two Niketas fought. The government captain wounded his friend, and then wept over and embraced him. Pray communicate this chivalrous sentimental story to the German Committees There are scribblers in that country, that would make it up into a five-act drama, with choruses.

ΧΘΕΣ βράδυ έφτασε ένας αγγελιοφόρος από την Αθήνα, με γράμματα από τους Οδυσσέα, Γκούρα, Αναστάσιο και άλλων προς εμένα, αναφέροντας ότι είχαν ξεκινήσει για το συνέδριο στη Θεσσαλονίκη, και πιέζοντας με να βιαστώ εκεί και εγώ. [Vide Appendix, No. 31.] Πέρασα το βράδυ γράφοντας και πακετάροντας τα πράγματα μου και το πρωί επισκέφτηκα το εκτελεστικό σώμα. Δεν συμφωνούν με το συνέδριο, λέγοντας ότι δεν το έχουν εγκρίνει, αλλά ότι το προωθεί ο Νέγρης, και ότι εν τέλει το επέφερα εγώ. Τους είπα ότι το είχα παρακινήσει ύστερα από παράκληση του Οδυσσέα, σε μια στιγμή που η κυβέρνηση ήταν αδύναμη, και ο στόχος της ήταν να δημιουργήσει μια ισχυρή συμμαχία προς όφελος της καλής διακυβέρνησης και δραστήριων προσπαθειών, και να αναγκάσει το Μοριά να δράσει με παρόμοιες αρχές. Και ξέροντας ότι αν ο Πάνος (Κολοκοτρώνης) το γνώριζε δεν θα επέτρεπε αυτή τη πυροβολαρχία να στραφεί εναντίον του, κυρίως κατά τόσων πολλών από των παρατάξεων του που είχαν πληγωθεί από αυτήν εγκατεστημένη στο Μεσολόγγι. Την είχα λοιπόν δώσει στους κατοίκους των Αθηνών, και είχα καταφέρει τον Γκούρα, το νομάρχη Λάμπρο, το Σοφιανόπουλο, και άλλους φίλους του Κολοκοτρώνη, να γράψουνε του Πάνου να το παραδώσει.
Με αυτόν τον τρόπο είχα αποκτήσει την πρέσα. Ο Γκούρας και o Οδυσσέας είχαν δώσει το λόγο τους ότι θα ήταν ελεύθερη και ο Καθηγητης Ψυλλάς, ενας φίλος της κυβέρνησης και της ελευθερίας, είχε αναλάβει να γράψει γι’αυτήν. Εξαιτίας της πιθανότητας του αποκλεισμού της Αθήνας, έπρεπε να στείλω την πρέσα προς το παρών στην Αίγινα, της οποίας νήσου ο νομάρχης είναι υπό την επιρροή της κυβερνήσεως που είπα, ότι εάν αυτός ο ελιγμός δεν τους ικανοποιούσε, πρέπει να πάω στη Θεσσαλονίκη, να παρατηρήσω της τακτικές του Νέγρη και του Μαυροκορδάτου, και να επιχειρήσω στο μέλλον να είμαι πιο επιδέξιος. Χαμογέλασαν, το ενέκριναν και μου έδωσαν τις αναφορές τους.
Το Άργος, όπως όλες οι άλλες πόλεις της Ελλάδος είναι ερειπωμένο. Κάλεσα τον Φλέσα, αρχιμανδρίτη και υπουργό εσωτερικών. Είναι δαιμόνιος άνθρώπος, ήταν ένας από τους οργνανωτές της επανάστασης και έχει υπηρετήσει πολύ ως στρατιώτης. Σχεδόν κάθε καπεταναίος έχει μερικούς παπάδες ανάμεσα στους στρατιώτες του, και ξεχωρίζουν από τους άλλους μόνο από τις γενειάδες τους. Ο αδελφός του Φλέσα έχει αποκλείσει την Τριπολιτσά. Το όνομα του είναι Νικήτας. Άλλος στρατηγός με το ίδιο όνομα, και γνωστός για την πολεμική του ικανότητα, και τον παρακάλεσε να μην κάνει κακό στους συναδέλφους του στρατιώτες και συμπολίτες, και επιχείρησε να τον αγκαλιάσει.
Ο άλλος του ζήτησε να επιστρέψει στα καθήκοντα του, να παραδώσει την πόλη στην κυβέρνηση και να μην πλησιάσει, αλλιώς θα του επιτεθεί. Και πάλι τον πλησίασε με φιλικό τρόπο. Ο βλοσυρός στρατιώτης τράβηξε το σπαθί του. Οι δύο Νικήτες πολέμισαν. Ο καπεταναίος της κυβέρνησης πλήγωσε τον φίλο του, και μετα έκλαψε από πάνω του και αγκάλιασε εκείνον. Σε παρακαλώ να μεταφέρεις αυτήν την συγκινητική και ιπποτική ιστορία στις Γερμανικές Επιτροπές. Υπάρχουνε γραφιάδες σ’αυτήν τη χώρα που θα μπορούσαν να το μετατρέψουν σε δράμα με πέντε σκηνές και χορωδίες.
