What?! What did you say, Grandma? Get red ants to bite your belly button?! Why’d you want to do that, Grandma—you’d die of pain!” he exclaimed in response.
Boom thought of the red ants that built their nests in the mango trees, longan trees, and other trees at home. Whenever he climbed the longan tree for fun, he’d let out a yell every time one bit him. His mom was always having to grind turmeric to put on his bites. And now here was Grandma, joking, telling him to get red ants to bite his belly button. Wouldn’t that really hurt? His belly button already stuck out. Even the smallest poke would make it hurt.
“Mm-hmm. You have to get red ants to bite your belly button,” Grandma repeated. “Once one’s bitten you, you’ll be as light as an ant, and then you’ll be able to swim.”

Nguyên nhân tai nạn do anh thua bạc, do vỡ nợ, do say rượu.

My brother was the first in the village to buy a motorbike. The sound of the motorbike astounded Go village no less than the time my family returned from the mountains with forty-one head of cattle. But also because of the motorbike he met with a horrible accident. Ran into a milepost; that the Grim Reaper took only his two legs was a great blessing. The cause of the accident was he had lost at gambling, was because he was bankrupt, was because he was drunk. The cause in reality was when he found out the fetus in his wife's belly wasn't his own. He tormented himself to forgive, unable to forgive he ran into the milepost. With his two legs sawed off, there was no need for torment my sister-in law took up and left. Only then did he learn how faithless people can be. In life, when you have not yet faced the storm, when you have not yet met your downfall, faithlessness has yet to show its face.

Vietnam had good relations with Iraq and regarded Iraq as an old friend. Vietnam objected to United Nations economic sanctions against Iraq following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, and further criticized the violation of Iraqi airspace in the north and south of Iraq by US and British planes. At the same time, Vietnam was a trading partner with Iraq under the United Nations Oil-for-Food program. When the United States attacked Iraq at the beginning of 1991, Vietnam sympathized and empathized with its “brother” in its like fate. In December 1999, when Vietnam’s central provinces were inundated by floods, this ongoing relationship and understanding led Iraq to offer Vietnam humanitarian assistance in the form of crude oil to the value of 10 million US dollars.

on a road stretching towards the seaside
the twilight glow splashes shadows of wayside trees on its surface
two shadows on two bicycles going side by side
flapping of ao dais in the cool air
yellow poinciana flowers fluttering down onto the black road
areca wood, saigo thicket, sway greeting a little stream
fruit in a roadside lean-to
dappled in twilight light
jackfruit, custard apple, banana, mango, coconut
each and every shadow full of life

It is said the takian hin came with the birth of living things but Para rubber was born on the earth no more than two human lifetimes ago. Nevertheless both species of timber arrived at their time of felling back to back. This I recount from my own experience. Every time we crawled up the red dirt road into the rubber plantation along the range we had to watch out for the square-framed logging trucks that came pelting down flat out in a frenzy. Up on top, takian nymphs sat crying and sniffling, their bodies bouncing along in time to the bumping and jolting. It happened often that we find these tiny sprites slipped and fallen into a roadside ditch. No one knew really how they might be dealt with, other than leaving them so, famished and without place of respite.

My Story

I first learnt Thai as a teenager on a year-long exchange program in Thailand (1982), my then fifth language. Several years later I took up Thai and Linguistics at the Australian National University (1988) where advanced Thai was supplemented with units on Southern Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese. I studied intermediate Vietnamese in Hanoi in 1990 and sat my Advanced Vietnamese certificate in Ho Chi Minh City in in 2007.

My early career was university-based, first as an officer of the National Thai Studies Centre (Australia) (1992-1995) working in multimedia language learning development, and contributing independent research on Tai/Thai dialects and phonetics (1993). I then undertook doctoral research on Thai/Cognitive Linguistics (1995-98), worked on my first paid project as a translator (100,000 words, Medical Anthropology/Isan dialect (2000)), lectured in linguistics in Bangkok (2000-1), and worked as an academic editor of Southeast Asian Studies publications in the USA (2002-4).

I became involved in Thai literary translation from 2003-2015, while spending over a decade in neighboring Vietnam alternating ESL teaching, and freelance translation and editing freelance for writers, a regional publisher and a writers association. From November 2014 to early 2020 I engaged in 5+ years full-time registered commercial translation based in Vietnam and Australia before taking a  break. As of November 2023, I am available again.
