Van harte welkom in Delft. Van harte welkom in ons mooie stadhuis. In dit huis worden niet alleen gasten ontvangen. Iedere maand vergadert hier ook de gemeenteraad van Delft. Als u echt geïnteresseerd bent in groepsbesluitvorming en onderhandeling dan nodig ik u van harte uit eens naar onze vergadering te komen kijken en luisteren.
Politiek is namelijk een zeer dynamisch proces waarbij alle facetten van groepsprocessen, samenwerken onderhandelen en uiteindelijk besluitvorming tezamen komen. Ondersteuning door technologie wordt nog niet toegepast, maar wie weet is ook technische ondersteuning bij politieke processen straks de normaalste zaak van de wereld.
Zoals eerder gezegd, u bent gast in de stad Delft. Delft is een middelgrote stad maar heeft desondanks heel veel te bieden. Naast moderne bedrijven en kennisinstituten heeft Delft een pakkende historie. Misschien mag ik u een stukje geschiedenis vertellen over mijn stad.
Delft is ontstaan aan een gegraven waterloop, de 'Delf', en heet daar ook naar; delven betekent graven. Op de verhoogde plaats waar deze 'Delf' de kreekwal van een dichtslibbend riviertje kruiste was, vermoedelijk sinds de 11e eeuw, een grafelijke vroonhof gevestigd. Delft werd mede hierdoor een belangrijk marktcentrum. Het marktcentrum kunt u nog steeds zien. Het ligt hier voor u en heeft op dinsdag nog steeds de functie van marktplein.
Graaf Willem II verleende Delft op 15 april 1246 stadsrecht. Handel en nijverheid kwamen er tot grote bloei. In 1389 werd de Delfshavensche Schie naar de Maas gegraven. Hierdoor kreeg Delft in die tijd een eigen zeehaven, Delfshaven.
Delft was tot de 17e eeuw een van de grote steden van Nederland. In 1400 had de stad bijvoorbeeld 6.500 inwoners en was zo de derde stad in grootte, na Dordrecht (8.000) en Haarlem (7.000). In 1560 was Amsterdam met 28.000 inwoners uitgegroeid tot de grootste stad, gevolgd door Delft, Leiden en Haarlem, die elk ongeveer 14.000 inwoners hadden. Tegenwoordig heeft Delft rond de 100.000 inwoners en is staat op de 24 plek qua inwonersaantal.
De stad Delft heeft een sterke band met het koningshuis van Nederland. Prins Willem van Oranje, ook wel de vader des vaderlands genoemd, resideerde korte tijd in Delft, in het voormalige Sint-Agathaklooster, dat sindsdien Prinsenhof wordt genoemd. Hij werd er op 10 juli 1584 vermoord door Balthasar Gerards. Het graf van Willem van Oranje is in de Nieuwe Kerk, tegenover dit stadhuis. In deze kerk worden tot nu toe alle leden van het koningshuis begraven.
Van oudsher is Delft bekend om haar Delfts Blauw. Het ontstond aan het einde van de 16de eeuw als goedkoop alternatief voor het blauw-witte Chinese porselein. Deze productie was zo succesvol dat alleen al in Delft rond 1700 ruim dertig fabrieken zich bezig hielden met de productie van Delfst Blauw. Tegenwoordig zijn er nog maar vier bakkerijen actief waarvan er slechts 1 sinds de oprichting in 1653 constant in bedrijf is geweest.
Gelukkig heeft de tijd in Delft niet stil gestaan. Integendeel zelfs. Dank zij de TU is Delft in de vaart der volkeren opwaarts gegaan. Naast de historische waarden die goed zijn voor een bloeiende toeristische industrie heeft Delft inmiddels ook bekendheid als kenniscentrum. Naast de TU zijn vele kennisinstituten en bedrijven die werken met hoogwaardige kennis verbonden aan deze stad. Een stad waar veel kennisinstituten zitten krijgt automatisch veel te maken met conferenties en symposia. Zoals uw conferentie!
Ik wens u interessante discussies toe en een verbreding en verdieping van uw kennis. Bovenal wens ik u een zeer prettig verblijf in Delft.

Welcome to Delft, and welcome to our beautiful town hall. This is not only a venue used for receiving guests, it is also where Delft’s city council holds its monthly meeting. If you have a genuine interest in group decision making and negotiation I hereby invite you to attend one of our meetings, so you can see and listen for yourselves.
For politics is very much a dynamic process whereby all aspects of group processes, collaboration, negotiation and eventually decision making come together. This process is not yet assisted by technology, but who knows, maybe technically assisted political processes will one day be the most natural thing in the world.
As I have already mentioned, you are our guest here in the city of Delft. Delft is a medium sized city which nevertheless has a great deal to offer. Besides modern companies and knowledge centres, Delft has an exciting history. Maybe you will allow me to tell you a little about the history of my city.
Delft was established on the site of a dug out watercourse called the “Delf”, and this is in fact what it is named after, for the English word “to delve” of course means “to dig”. On the elevated site where this “Delf” crossed the embankment of a silted river there was an imperial socage-farm, which is believed to have been there since the eleventh century. This contributed to Delft becoming an important market town. This market town aspect lives on to this very day, for a market is held every Tuesday, on the market square right here in front of where we are now.
On 15th April 1246, Delft received its city franchise from Earl Willem II. Trade and commerce began to flourish. In 1389 the “Delfshavensche Schie” was dug to the river Maas, which meant that Delft got its own seaport – “Delfshaven”.
Up until the 17th century Delft was one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands. Take the year 1400 for example when the city had 6,500 inhabitants, making it the third largest city, after Dordrecht (8,000) and Haarlem (7,000). By 1560 Amsterdam had become the largest city, with 28,000 inhabitants, followed by Delft, Leiden and Haarlem, which all had around 14,000 inhabitants. Delft currently has approximately 100,000 inhabitants, and finds itself in 24th place in terms of inhabitants.
The city of Delft also has a strong link with the Dutch Royal Family. Prince William of Orange, also known as the Father of the Nation, lived in Delft for a short spell, in the former Sint-Agathaklooster, which is now called the “Prinsenhof”. It was here he was murdered on 10th July 1584, by Balthasar Gerards. William of Orange’s mausoleum can be found in the “New Church”, opposite this town hall. This church is where to date all members of the Royal Family rest in peace.
From way back Delft has been renowned for its Delft blue pottery. It started being produced at the end of the 16th century, as a cheaper alternative to blue and white Chinese porcelain. This production was so successful that around the year 1700 there were about thirty factories producing Delft pottery, in Delft alone. There are currently only four earthenware factories which are still in operation, only one of which has been in constant use since it was founded in 1653.
Luckily time has not stood still in Delft. On the contrary. Thanks to the TU (Technical University) Delft has made leaps and bounds. Apart from its historical qualities which guarantee a flourishing tourist industry, Delft has also gained a reputation as a knowledge centre. Besides the TU, many knowledge centres and companies which work with first-rate knowledge are connected to this city. A city which has many knowledge centres will inevitably see conferences and symposiums taking place on a regular basis. Conferences like yours!
I sincerely hope you will have many interesting discussions here and have the opportunity to broaden and deepen your knowledge. But above all, I wish you a very pleasant stay in Delft.
