1. Prepare the following supplies: injection of study drug, swabs moistened with alcohol, and a wastebasket which is strong enough to retain any excess liquid.
2. Verify the syringe which contains the study drug_ Don’t use the syringe if the liquid is opaque or contains small, hard objects.
3. Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap and dry them completely.
4. Must be in the sitting position while injecting the drug into the patient’s body.
5. Choose a site to inject the drug around the lower part of the abdomen, at a distance of at least two inches to the left or right of the navel. Choose a different site on your stomach every time you inject the drug.
6. Clean the site where you inject the drug very well by using a swab moistened with alcohol and let it air dry.
7. Remove the cover from the needle of the syringe and pull it straight off with an upward motion to avoid exposing the needle to twisting and damage.
8. Follow the attending physician’s instructions in regards to expelling an amount of liquid from the study drug so that the remaining amount inside the syringe that will be given to the patient is equal to the amount stated on the prescription sheet.
9. Use one of your hands to hold a part of the skin and twist it around the site that you cleaned on the stomach. Hold that part of the skin that you twisted with your index finger and thumb throughout the entire injection time.
10. Hold the syringe with the fingers of your other hand as you hold a pen and insert the entire needle into the skin site that you are holding.
Taking your study drug
11. Push the plunger down until the syringe is empty, leading to injecting the study drug, and be sure to keep holding the injection site on the skin throughout the entire process of the injection.
12. Pull back the needle in a straight line and let go of the skin that you were holding. To minimize bruising, do not rub the injection site after completion of the injection
13. Press firmly over the injection site by using a round piece of cotton wool or a swab moistened with alcohol for two minutes.
14. Dispose of the syringe into a strong dustbin that’s leak proof. You must not use the syringe more than once.
