Am grauen Strand, am grauen Meer
Und seitab liegt die Stadt;
Kein Vogel ohn Unterlaß;
Die Wandergans mit hartem Schrei
Nur fliegt in Herbstesnacht vorbei,
Am Strande weht das Gras.
Doch hängt mein ganzes Herz an dir,
Du graue Stadt am Meer;
Der Jugend Zauber für und für
Ruht lächelnd doch auf dir, auf dir,
Du graue Stadt am Meer.
Translation - English The City-Theodor Storm trans. Marlene Melchior 2010
On the grey shore, by the grey sea
lays yonder a small city
Mist lies heavily upon the rooftops
and apart from the sound of gutter drops
is the roar of the sea
in that small city
No forests whisper, nor does the bird
sing in spring
It is the wild goose who is heard
its harsh cry
as he passes by
in the autumn night to the shore
where the dunes lie.
And yet my heart is tied to thee,
grey city by the sea
The wonder of my youth
rests and smiles on thee, on thee
grey city by the sea

(Abend. Blankenese. Man hört den Wind und das Wasser. Beckmann. Der Andere.)
BECKMANN: Wer ist da? Mitten in der Nacht. Hier am Wasser. Hallo! Wer ist denn da?
DER ANDERE: Ich.
BECKMANN: Und wer ist das: Ich?
DER ANDERE: Ich bin der Andere.
BECKMANN: Der Andere? Welcher Andere?
DER ANDERE: Der von gestern. Der von Früher. Der Andere von Immer. Der
Antworter.
BECKMANN: Der von Früher?
DER ANDERE: Der auch. Und auch der von heute abend. Ich bin auch der Andere von
morgen.
BECKMANN: Morgen. Morgen gibt es nicht. Morgen ist ohne dich. Hau ab. Du hast kein
Gesicht.
BECKMANN: Morgen. Morgen gibt es nicht. Morgen ist ohne dich. Hau ab. Du hast kein
Gesicht.
An
den Nachmittagen. Im Bett. Nachts.
BECKMANN: Du hast kein Gesicht. Geh weg.
BECKMANN: Geh weg. Ich will dich nicht. Ich sage Nein. Nein.
BECKMANN: Ich bin gefallen.
DER ANDERE: Ins Wasser?
BECKMANN: Nein, nein!
Plumps. Aus. Vorbei.

Beckmann: Who's there? In the middle of the night. Here on the water.
Hello! Who is that there?
Other: Me
B:And who is me?
O:I am the other
B: The other? Which other?
O:The other from yesterday. From earlier. The other of always. The giver of answers.
B:From earlier?
O: That too. Also the one from this evening. I am also the other from tomorrow.
B: Tomorrow. There is no tomorrow. Tomorrow will be without you. Get out of here. You don't have a face.
O: You won't get rid of me. I am the other, here is always there. Who laughs when you cry. The distraction when you try to sleep.I am he who believes, who loves! I am he who marches on when you behind to hobble. The one who says 'yes', when you say 'no'. I am the yes man.
B:Go away. I don't want want you. I say no. No. You hear?
O:I hear you. That's why I am staying here. Who are you then you naysayer?
B: I am called Beckmann
O:You don't have a first name, naysayer?
B: No. Not since yesterday. As of yesterday my only name is Beckmann. Simply Beckmann. Just as a table is only called table.
O:Who said table to you?
B:My wife. No, the woman who was my wife. I was away for three years. In the war. And yesterday I came home again. That was teh misfortune. Three years is a long time, you know. 'Beckmann' said my wife to me. Simply Beckmann. As is the case when one is away for three years. Beckman she said just as you would say table, to a table. Piece of furniture Beckmann. You see, that's why I don't have a first name anymore, understand.
O: And why are you lying here in the sand? In the middle of the night. Here on the water?
B:Because I can't get up. Namely cause I brought my stiff leg along. As a keepsake.
O:And that is why you are lying here in the evening by the water.
B: I have fallen.
O:In the water.
B:No, no!I want to be left in the muck. Intentionally. I can't bear it anymore. This limp and hooble. And then the stuff with the wife, the woman who was my wife. And somewhere below my boy is lying. He was exactly a year old and I still had never seen him. But now I see him every night. So there I want to be left where I fell, from the pontoon. Doof.Out.Over

Target group and sample
Target group
Image Marke versus Wettbewerber
Translation - English Background and aim of the survey
Julius Bär is one of Switzerland’s leading asset management firms. The services provided by this private bank are aimed at high net worth private customers and institutional investors. They include a range of investment products as well as the management and distribution of investment funds.
The firm’s headquarters are based in Switzerland; thez are also represented by a number of international branch offices.
Following a number of company acquisitions in September 2005, the firm’s overall strategy was revised. The company’s philosophy, branding, market positioning and communication strategies, including advertising and sponsorship, were revised to meet the new requirements.
The effects of these new market strategies are to be investigated by means of a world-wide market analysis study, focussing on Germany, Italy, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.
The survey focuses on the following questions:
How well-known is the Julius Bär brand (aided/unaided recall) in comparison to its competitors?
How relevant is the brand to its target audience?
What is the target audience’s main banking service?
What does the target audience require of an asset manager?
Which criteria are important when making investment decisions?
How well do Julius Bär and its competitors meet the requirements / investment criteria?
How are Julius Bär and its competitors perceived?
What is Julius Bär’s USP as seen by the target audience?
What sort of image influences the brand appeal of a company?
Taking this into account, Julius Bär asked GFK to provide a quote that set out the key parameters to be investigated and the fee to be charged for each of these.
2 Investigative approach and sample
2.1 Target group and sample
Target group
The group being targeted by this survey is high net worth individuals with available investment assets of a million euros/US dollars (not including property) based in Switzerland, Germany, UK, Italy (Milan), Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.
Depending on the address quality, secondary interviews will also be conducted in these countries with affluent individuals with available assets worth between 250,000 and 1 million euros/US dollars (again not inclusive of property).
We recommend that for every country a large enough sample is selected in order to provide a set of valid statistics. The target group composed of affluent individuals should be included oin this and for every country n=100 interviews, n=50 interviews conducted with HNWI and n=50 with affluent individuals, should be carried out.
This would give the following sample plan:
As an alternative we also have provided you with a quote for n=50 interviews with millionaires in each country, and for n=150 interviews (n=50 with HNWI and n=100 affluent individuals).
2.2 Data collection method and the questionnaire
Due to the difficulty of accessing the desired target group, as has been mentioned, we advise in this case that personal interviews are the most appropriate method of data collection.
At present, the plan is to conduct a 25-30 minute interview comprised of four open ended questions. We estimate that the surveys for use in the in individual countries will have around 90% correspondence. The survey will be designed in close cooperation with Julius Bär and this forms part in of GfK’s quote.
2.3 Possible foundations of the analysis and its dimension
The ultimate goal when developing a brand is the creation of a sense of affinity and brand loyalty within the target audience. The extent to which this succeeds in the various markets under consideration is made clear by the following Funnel Analysis. Funnel Analysis discloses how well a particular brand is performing at different levels in the (business process) i.e. beginning with the analysis of the brand’s market profile and concluding with completion rate and brand loyalty.
This fictional example shows the ‘bottle necks’ that Julius Bär is encountering in terms of making the crossover from brand recognition to inclusion within consumers’ “relevant set”, and from this to their becoming loyal customers. Whilst there is only small potential for improvements in brand recognition, the question needs to be asked of what positioning would allow higher preferences for Julius Bär to be generated.
Semantic Networks
A semantic networks allows spontaneous associations with the Julius Bär brand to be integrated into the investigation. In order to create a semantic network, at least 3-5 spontaneous associations to a brand must be recorded, in their exact order, per person questioned. Using the semantic network, the number of associations (size of the circle) and the ordering of these (distance to brand), as well as the correlation between the asociations (grouping or overlap of circles) can be found
Brand Image versus competitors
When assessing a brand’s strengths and weaknesses it is always important to conduct an analysis that compares your brand to the competing brands.
In this analysis, especial attention is to be paid to the dimensions which differ most to the competitor’s brand. This allows assessment of the brand’s potential for optimisation in terms of the emotional and intellectual levels which have been investigated.
Brand image and strengths of Julius Bär – in comparison to competitors
Image profiling and strength/weakness analysis demonstrate the way in which various brands are viewed within the market. However this sort of analysis does not actually give a clear idea of a brand’s position in terms of consumer preference and ranking overall. With the Brand Potential Index (BPIâ) an understanding of consumer rating and preference can be established. The BPI is a means of measuring the emotional and intellectual values that a customer associates with specific brands. This level of brand’s appeal can be understood as a measure of brand value in terms of behavioural science.
The BPI uses ten different factors, which are regarded within science and industry as the central indicators of branding and positional success on the market. While BPI was being developed the connection between a brand’s market appeal and these factors was repeatedly proven by surveys and research conducted. A BPI measurement can therefore be seen as a reliable indication of the way in which a particular brand is viewed in terms of consumer attractiveness and market success.
In order to ascertain how well a brand is performing on the market, it is recommended that a comparison is made between how well other brands compare on the BMI scale i.e. how appealing other brands are when assessed by the BPI factors.
Analysis of Defining Qualities
Individual brand meaning and its defining qualities can be established when viewed in relation to a specific brand’s market success. Through calculating the causal link between brand image and specific product qualities using BPI it is possible to determine the exact qualities that make a particular brand desirable on the market.
When analysing a brands defining qualities the minimal sample size taken from the target group should never be smaller than n=100.
Segmentation
On the basis of knowledge acquired from various forms of data and cluster analysis different consumer and customer groups can be determined. These consumer groups can be individually ranked and defined in order to cognate different types of brand preferences.

Personen daran beteiligt waren.
Translation - English Marlene Melchior Translation- Kafka’s Der Prozess/Trial
Someone must have sullied Josef K’s good name , because one morning without having done anything wrong he was arrested.
His landlady’s cook brought him his breakfast every day at around eight but today she did not come. This had never happened before; K waited a while and saw from his pillow the old woman who lived opposite him, watching him with a look of intense curiosity.
Feeling disconcerted and hungry he rang the bell. Instantly there came a knock from behind the door and a man who he’d never before seen in the building walked in. He was slim and, yet, well built. He wore a fitted frock coat which reminded one of formal day wear , sporting a variety of pleats, pockets, buckles, buttons and a belt. All this gave him a look of practicality without indicating why such practicality might be necessary.
“Who are you?” asked K, as he sat half upright in bed.
Marlene Melchior Translation- Kafka’s Der Prozess/Trial
The man merely evaded the question, as though his arrival were a fact to be accepted without question , and said in a blasé manner,
“You rang?”
“Anna is supposed to bring me my breakfast” said K and silently tried to figure out who this man was and his reason for being here. But the man did not subject himself to K’s questioning gaze and wandered to the door which he opened slightly and said to someone standing just behind it.
“He wants Anna to bring him his breakfast”.
A small peal of laughter followed in the next room, from the sound it was not clear if more than one person had taken part. Although the strange man could not have gathered anything he had not already known from this reply, he said simply to K in an officious manner, “It is impossible”.
