Fetal anomaly ultrasound scan
A screening test offered to pregnant women to check on the growth and development of the fetus before birth by producing a moving image. Scans before 16 weeks are useful for dating and finding out whether the child is likely to survive (and are able to pick up some major malformations). Detailed scanning at 18 to 21 weeks should show up most malformations as well as some minor ones.
Fetal blood sampling A way of getting blood from a fetus for analysis
Fetus In humans, this is the unborn child after the end of the eighth week of pregnancy to the moment of birth.
Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH)
A method of analysing tissue from an amniocentesis that checks for certain chromosomes associated with conditions such as Down’s syndrome. It is used on cells from chorionic villi or amniotic fluid straight from the body.
Fragile site A small break or an unusual narrow point on a chromosome. In people who have Fragile-X syndrome, a disorder that seriously affects mental development, and causes other growth problems, a fragile site can often be seen on their X chromosome.
Fraser Ruling (previously Gillick competence)
The ruling that children under 16 (including those with learning disabilities) who have enough understanding and intelligence to make them able to understand fully what is involved in a proposed surgery of treatment should be able to choose whether to have it.
