Czech to English: Historie Lužických Srbů - History of Lusatians (Sorbs, Western Serbs)
Source text - Czech
V Bavorsku sídlili tehdy Srbové v povodí řeky Náby (Naab), dále v povodích řek Reknice (Regnitz), Pěknice (Pegnitz) a v celém území bavorských Smrčin.
Translation - English
Lusatians (Sorbs, Western Serbs) of which about 30,000 live today in the Lower and Upper Lusatia in Germany are only a small portion of a once large Slavic nation of Western Slavs who lived in the territory of the eastern and northern Bavaria, in part of Thuringia and Brandenburg and in the whole territory of Saxony. In their history the Western Serbs have never had their own united state. During the Frankish invasions in the 7th and 78th century there were only a few mutually independent Sorbian principalities. In Bavaria the Sorbs settled in the basin of the Naab river, then in basins of Regnitz and Pegnitz rivers and in the whole territory of Bavarian Fichtelgebrige. In Thuringia the Western Serbs settled in the basin of the Saal river as well as on both banks of its tributaries. However, many Sorbian tribes have their major seats in Saxony: Daleminci, Milceni. The Bavarians, Thuringians and Saxons supported by Catholic monasteries colonized the Sorbian territories from the 7th to the 11th century and the colonizers founded new German towns where the Sorbs were not allowed to settle. That was the beginning of global germanization of the whole Slavic nation. In the 11th century all territories previously settled by the Sorbs came under the sovereignty of German margraves, marquises and counts. Despite the towns then were already German, the countryside remain Sorbian for many centuries.
