Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - Polish Kiedy moja żona powiedziała mi, że jest w ciąży, poczułem, jak żołądek podchodzi mi gardła, zupełnie jakbym pędził górską kolejką w wesołym miasteczku głową w dół. Byłem podekscytowany, tak, ale… Boże święty! Rodzicielstwo to zabawa dla, hmm, rodziców.
Oto ja, z oczyma wytrzeszczonymi z przerażenia i spocony jak mysz, niby jakaś żałosna postać rodem z komiksu, a w mojej głowie wirują znaki zapytania, podczas gdy próbuję przygotować się do otoczenia pełną opieką i wzięcia odpowiedzialności za inne, oprócz mojego kota, żywe stworzenie. Jestem odpowiedzialny za zadbanie o to, aby ten mały człowiek nie wyrósł na kompletnego potwora. Jeżeli dziecko okaże się socjopatą – moja wina. Jeżeli maluch nie będzie potrafił znaleźć na mapie Luksemburga, na mnie spadnie odium za to, że nie zapewniłem mu lepszego wykształcenia. Potrzebna będzie terapia, a to oczywiście również będzie na mojej głowie. Tyle okazji do zbłądzenia!
Pamiętam ten dzień, gdy mój ojciec posadził mnie obok siebie i z zakłopotaniem opowiadał mi o ptaszkach i pszczółkach; było to chyba najbardziej nieznośne i krępujące pół godziny w życiu każdego z nas. Nie mogę tego zrobić drugiemu człowiekowi.
Może niepotrzebnie martwię się na zapas. Jasne, że mi się uda. Będę świetnym ojcem. Moje dziecko wychowam na wszechstronnego, wykształconego, uczciwego obywatela świata, a ono mnie nie znienawidzi.
I naraz wyobrażam sobie tego maluszka, wciąż jeszcze bezpiecznie schowanego w brzuchu mojej żony, jak ten otwiera nagle w przerażeniu oko, gdy do głowy przychodzi mu taka myśl: „A co będzie, jeżeli mój tata po prostu nie da sobie z tym rady?”

Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Gdyby to ciągłe bieganie i pstrykanie poskutkowało na koniec czymś, co wcześniej nie istniało: obrazami uchwyconego piękna lub wypowiedzianej prawdy... Ale, niestety, tak nie jest. Aparat po prostu produkuje uwzniośloną wersję graffiti.
Aparat fotograficzny to środek do tego, aby odcisnąć nasze piętno na wszystkim, co widzimy, pod pretekstem uwieczniania Cudów Świata, które już zostały cudownie uwiecznione przez profesjonalistów i znajdują się w sprzedaży w każdej lokalnej księgarni lub kiosku z gazetami. Source text - Spanish El fútbol soporta una maldición que a la vez es la salvación de jugadores, entrenadores y forofos compungidos por una derrota. Se trata de una actividad en la que no basta con ganar, sino que hay que ganar siempre, en cada temporada, en cada torneo, en cada partido. Un escritor, un arquitecto, un músico pueden sestear un poco tras haber hecho una gran novela, un maravilloso edificio, un disco inolvidable. Pueden no hacer nada durante un tiempo o hacer algo menor. Entre los primeros, que son los que más conozco, los hay que han pasado a ser buenos por decreto y hasta el fin de sus días gracias a una sola obra estimable escrita cincuenta años atrás. En el fútbol, por el contrario, no caben el descanso ni el divertimento, de poco sirve tener un extraordinario palmarés histórico o haber conquistado un título el año anterior. No se considera nunca que ya se ha cumplido, sino que se exige (y los propios jugadores se lo exigen a sí mismos) ganar el siguiente encuentro también, como si se empezara desde cero siempre, analogía del resultado inicial de todo partido. A diferencia de otras actividades de la vida, en el deporte (pero sobre todo en el fútbol) no se acumula ni atesora nada, pese a las salas de trofeos y a las estadísticas cada vez más apreciadas. Haber sido ayer el mejor no cuenta ya hoy, no digamos mañana. La alegría pasada no puede hacer nada contra la angustia presente, aquí no existe la compensación del recuerdo, ni la satisfacción por lo ya alcanzado, ni por supuesto el agradecimiento del público por el contento procurado hace dos semanas. Translation - Polish Piłka nożna stanowi dowód na istnienie przekleństwa, które jest jednocześnie wybawieniem dla piłkarzy, trenerów i przygnębionych klęską fanów. Chodzi o grę, której nie wystarczy wygrać, lecz w której trzeba wygrywać zawsze, w każdym sezonie, w każdych zawodach, w każdym meczu. Pisarz, architekt czy muzyk mogą nieco odpocząć po stworzeniu wielkiej powieści, wspaniałego budynku czy niezapomnianej płyty. Mogą przez pewien czas nie robić nic lub robić coś o mniejszym znaczeniu. Wśród tych najwybitniejszych, których znam najlepiej, są tacy, którzy stali się dobrzy, ponieważ takimi zostali obwołani ze skutkiem dożywotnim dzięki jednemu jedynemu godnemu podziwu dziełu napisanemu pięćdziesiąt lat wcześniej. W piłce nożnej wręcz przeciwnie – nie przysługuje ani odpoczynek, ani rozrywka, niewiele też znaczy imponująca lista dawnych sukcesów, czy tytuł wywalczony w poprzednim roku. W odróżnieniu od innych sfer działań życiowych, w sporcie (a przede wszystkim w piłce nożnej) nic się nie kumuluje ani nie procentuje, pomimo tego, że gabloty pełne trofeów i statystyki cieszą się coraz większym uznaniem. Bycie najlepszym wczoraj nie ma już dziś znaczenia, nie mówiąc o dniu jutrzejszym. Wczorajsza radość nic nie poradzi na dzisiejszy niepokój, nie istnieje tu pocieszenie w postaci wspomnień, ani satysfakcja z przeszłych dokonań, ani – oczywiście – wdzięczność publiczności za zadowolenie, jakie stało się jej udziałem dwa tygodnie temu. Podobnie zresztą nie trwa długo żal ani gniew, które z dnia na dzień mogą ustąpić miejsca euforii i wynoszeniu pod niebiosa. Być może dlatego piłka nożna jest sportem, który pobudza do agresji - jak powiedział Cabrera; jednakże nie ze względu na możliwość wymiany kopniaków, ale na stan niepokoju. Z drugiej strony trzeba przyznać, że ma w sobie coś bezcennego, co nieczęsto występuje w pozostałych sytuacjach życiowych: pobudza umiejętność zapominania, w związku z czym można równie dobrze powiedzieć, że tym, do czego nie pobudza nigdy, jest pamiętliwość – coś, czego można nauczyć się wyłącznie w wieku dorosłym.

Before I started working as a full-time translator in 2006 (part-time since 2004), my job-related duties throughout the period of over 14 years of office experience had always involved a vast number of petty translations, mainly of a commercial/business character. Now I am focused entirely on translation, which allows me to experience a constant growth in the business and continuous development of my skills. My areas of expertise are mainly business-related topics. I am focused on subjects related to Human Resources, such as employment contracts, employee guidebooks, and training materials; however, I am also eager to translate marketing-related materials, such as advertising leaflets/flyers, client satisfaction surveys, business contracts, and texts related to politics and economy. I have also translated a large number of texts (leaflets, newsletters, contracts, etc.) related to real estate and travel&tourism. Besides, I am also interested in, and comfortable with, humanities and social science (art, literature, education etc.). On the other hand, I am not, and will probably never be, a medical / technical translator.
In 2003 I completed BA studies in Business Management, specializing in HRM. In 2006 I completed BA studies in English Philology, specializing in Translation.
In 2007, I was chosen the winner of the Fourth ProZ.com Translation Contest in the English to Polish language pair; I was also the runner-up in two more contests (English to Polish and Spanish to Polish).
Apart from being my profession, translating is one of my main hobbies.
