Wattanosot Hospital succeeds in breast replacement operations for the poor.
A Second Project will receive a further 5 people for treatment and emphasizes the recent progress made in improving the quality of life for patients.
Wattanosot Hospital is set to continue its Breast Replacement Operations for Breast Cancer Patients Project for a second year after receiving widespread interest in the first year, attracting more than 100 applications from prospective patients. Of these, nine were chosen for breast replacement and a chance to better their mental and physical quality of life.
Doctor Chadtree Duangned, President of the Administrative Department at Bangkok Hospital Medical Centre commended the recent success of the previous breast replacement operations project, in which patients who had lost their breasts through breast cancer operations were able to have breasts again like everybody else, and no longer needed to feel inferior about their chests, which had a positive effect on their physical and mental health. In order to give something back to society, Wattanasot Hospital, which specializes in cancer, is continuing its Breast Replacement Operations for Breast Cancer Patients Project for a second year in order to raise the quality of life of breast cancer patients and will select a further five individuals to undergo the operation.
Assistant Professor Krit Potisuvarn, Chairman of the Bangkok Breast Center at Wattanosot Hospital disclosed that in the past there was only one method of treatment, which necessitated removing the affected breast or breasts completely. This meant that the patient had to spend the rest of their life with only one or no breasts. This naturally had an adverse effect on the individual’s daily life, as well as the way they felt about themselves, which often led to other problems within the family. Conversely, breast replacement helps to conquer these adversities and build confidence, so that the patient reaches a more stable state of mind.
The team of physicians is able reconstruct a breast that has previously been removed by using skin grafts and abdominal fat, or TRAM Flap. The reconstructed breast looks entirely natural and does not contain any artificial substances, whilst the use of abdominal fat to reconstruct the breast helps to reduce fat in that area, in cases where the patient is obese.
The breast replacement project for breast cancer patients has been running for one year, serving members of the public on low income who lack the opportunity to receive treatment. In the first year, 9 patients underwent the treatment and it was a tremendous success. The second phase of the project will start receiving applications at the beginning of next year and will select five cancer patients for treatment. Prospective patients should not be aged over 50, be in good health and be certain that they want breast replacement. In addition, they must not have any congenial diseases that may jeopardize the operation, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, AIDS, etc. Nor should they have been forbidden from undergoing surgery for whatever reason, have any lower abdominal complications, which make operations impossible, or have had radiation treatment in the area where the breast is to be replaced. If patients meet all of the above criteria then they are eligible to apply for the complete treatment. They must then pass a doctor’s examination and be approved by the Wattanosot Hospital Committee.
