They say when trouble comes close ranks, and so the white people did. But we were not in their ranks. The Jamaican ladies had never approved of my mother, ‘because she pretty like pretty self’ Christophine said.
She was my father’s second wife, far too young for him they though, and, worse still, a Martinique girl. When I asked her why so few people came to see us, she told me that the road from Spanish Town to Coulibri Estate where we lived was very bad and that road repairing was now a thing of the past. (My father, visitors, horses, feeling safe in bed – all belonged to the past.)
Another day I heard her talking to Mr Luttrell, our neighbour and her only friend. ‘Of course they have their own misfortunes. Still waiting for this compensation the English promised when the Emancipation Act was passed. Some will wait for a long time.’
How could she know that Mr. Luttrell would be the first who grew tired of waiting? One calm evening he shot his dog, swam out to sea and was gor for always. No agent came from England to look after his property – Nelson’s Rest it was called – and strangers from Spanish Town rode up to gossip and discuss the tragedy.
‘Live at Nelson’s Rest? Not for love or money. An unlucky place.’
Mr Luttrell’s house was left empty, shutters banging in the wind. Soon the black people said it was haunted, they wouldn’t go near it. And no one came near us.
I got used to a solitary life, but my mother still planned and hoped – perhaps she had to hope every time she passed a looking glass.
She still rode about every morning not caring that the black people stood about in groups to jeer at her, especially after her riding clothes grew shabby (they notice clothes, they know about money).
Then one day, very early, I saw her horse lying down under the frangipani tree. I went up to him but he was not sick, he was dead and his eyes were black with flies. I ran away and did not speak of it for I thought if I told no one it might not be true. But later that day, Godfrey found him, he had been poisoned. ‘Now we are marooned,’ my mother said, ‘now what will become of us?’
Godfrey said, ‘I can’t watch the horse night and day. I too old now. When the old time go, let it go. No use to grab at it. The Lord made no distinction between black and white, black and white the same for Him. Rest yourself in peace for the righteous are not forsaken.’ But she couldn’t. She was young. How could she not try for all the things that had gone so suddenly, so without warning. ‘You’re blind when you want to be blind,’ she said ferociously, ‘and you’re deaf when you want to be deaf. The old hypocrite,’ she kept saying. ‘He knew what they were going to do.’ ‘The devil prince of this world,’ Godfrey said, ‘but this world don’t last so long for mortal man.’

Dicono che quando i guai arrivano in formazione militare, anche i bianchi arrivano.
Ma noi non appartenevamo allo stesso rango.

Stava ancora aspettando il rimborso che gl'Inglesi avevano promesso quando la Legge sull'Emancipazione fu passata.
Alcuni dovranno aspettare a lungo
Come faceva a sapere che il Signor Luttrell sarebbe stato il primo a stancarsi d'aspettare?
Un sereno pomeriggio sparò al suo cane, nuotò al largo e sparì per sempre.
Nessun agente venne dall'Inghilterra per prendersi cura della sua proprietà - si chiamava Il Rifugio di Nelson - e sconosciuti provenienti da Spanish Town vennero a cavallo per spettegolare e discutere sulla tragedia.
'Vivere al Rifugio di Nelson?
Non per amore o per denaro.
Un posto sventurato.'
La casa del Signor Luttrell venne lasciata vuota, con i battenti che sbattevano nel vento.

Mi sono avvicinata a lui ma non era malato, era morto e i suoi occhi erano neri e pieni di mosche.
Fuggii e non parlai dell'accaduto perché pensavo che se non ne avessi parlato con nessuno il fatto non sarebbe mai successo.
Ma più tardi quel giorno, Goffredo lo trovò, era stato avvelenato.
'Adesso sí che siamo isolati', mia madre disse, 'che cosa ne sarà di noi ora?'
Goffredo si giustificò, 'non posso mica stare alla guardia del cavallo giorno e notte.
Io vecchio pure
Quando i vecchi tempi vanno via, lasciali andare.
Inutile tenerseli stretti.
Il Signore non ha fatto distinzione tra neri e bianchi, neri e bianchi gli stessi per Lui.
Riposate in pace perché i giusti non saranno abbandonati'.
Ma lei non ci riusciva.
Era giovane.
Come poteva non cercare d'ottenere tutte le cose che se n'erano andate così all'improvviso senza preavviso.

THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. AT LENGTH I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled -- but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.
It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation.
He had a weak point -- this Fortunato -- although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit. For the most part their enthusiasm is adopted to suit the time and opportunity to practise imposture upon the British and Austrian MILLIONAIRES. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen , was a quack, but in the matter of old wines he was sincere. In this respect I did not differ from him materially; I was skilful in the Italian vintages myself, and bought largely whenever I could.
It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand.
I said to him -- "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day! But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts."
"How?" said he, "Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible ? And in the middle of the carnival?"
"I have my doubts," I replied; "and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain."
"Amontillado!"
"I have my doubts."
"Amontillado!"
"And I must satisfy them."
"Amontillado!"
"As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If any one has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me" --
"Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry."
"And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own."
"Come let us go."
"Whither?"
"To your vaults."
"My friend, no; I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement Luchesi" --
"I have no engagement; come."
"My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted . The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre."
"Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon; and as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado."
Thus speaking, Fortunato possessed himself of my arm. Putting on a mask of black silk and drawing a roquelaire closely about my person, I suffered him to hurry me to my palazzo.
There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honour of the time. I had told them that I should not return until the morning and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance , one and all, as soon as my back was turned.
I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors.
The gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode.
"The pipe," said he.
"It is farther on," said I; "but observe the white webwork which gleams from these cavern walls."
He turned towards me and looked into my eyes with two filmy orbs that distilled the rheum of intoxication .
"Nitre?" he asked, at length
"Nitre," I replied. "How long have you had that cough!"
"Ugh! ugh! ugh! -- ugh! ugh! ugh! -- ugh! ugh! ugh! -- ugh! ugh! ugh! -- ugh! ugh! ugh!
My poor friend found it impossible to reply for many minutes.
"It is nothing," he said, at last.
"Come," I said, with decision, we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchesi" --
"Enough," he said; "the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough."
"True -- true," I replied; "and, indeed, I had no intention of alarming you unnecessarily -- but you should use all proper caution. A draught of this Medoc will defend us from the damps."
Here I knocked off the neck of a bottle which I drew from a long row of its fellows that lay upon the mould.
"Drink," I said, presenting him the wine.
He raised it to his lips with a leer. He paused and nodded to me familiarly, while his bells jingled.
"I drink," he said, "to the buried that repose around us."
"And I to your long life."
He again took my arm and we proceeded.
"These vaults," he said, are extensive."
"The Montresors," I replied, "were a great numerous family."
"I forget your arms."
"A huge human foot d'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel."
"And the motto?"
"Nemo me impune lacessit."
"Good!" he said.
The wine sparkled in his eyes and the bells jingled. My own fancy grew warm with the Medoc. We had passed through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs. I paused again, and this time I made bold to seize Fortunato by an arm above the elbow.
"The nitre!" I said: see it increases. It hangs like moss upon the vaults. We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back ere it is too late. Your cough" --
"It is nothing" he said; "let us go on. But first, another draught of the Medoc."
I broke and reached him a flagon of De Grave. He emptied it at a breath. His eyes flashed with a fierce light. He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation I did not understand.
I looked at him in surprise. He repeated the movement -- a grotesque one.
"You do not comprehend?" he said.
"Not I," I replied.
"Then you are not of the brotherhood."
"How?"
"You are not of the masons."
"Yes, yes," I said "yes! yes."
"You? Impossible! A mason?"
"A mason," I replied.
"A sign," he said.
"It is this," I answered, producing a trowel from beneath the folds of my roquelaire.
"You jest," he exclaimed, recoiling a few paces. "But let us proceed to the Amontillado."
"Be it so," I said, replacing the tool beneath the cloak, and again offering him my arm. He leaned upon it heavily. We continued our route in search of the Amontillado. We passed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on, and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame.
At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead , in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size. Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven. It seemed to have been constructed for no especial use in itself, but formed merely the interval between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs, and was backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite.
It was in vain that Fortunato, uplifting his dull torch, endeavoured to pry into the depths of the recess. Its termination the feeble light did not enable us to see.
"Proceed," I said; "herein is the Amontillado. As for Luchesi" --
"He is an ignoramus," interrupted my friend, as he stepped unsteadily forward, while I followed immediately at his heels. In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered . A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain. from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist . Withdrawing the key I stepped back from the recess.
"Pass your hand," I said, "over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed it is VERY damp. Once more let me IMPLORE you to return. No? Then I must positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power."
"The Amontillado!" ejaculated my friend, not yet recovered from his astonishment.
"True," I replied; "the Amontillado."
As I said these words I busied myself among the pile of bones of which I have before spoken. Throwing them aside, I soon uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar. With these materials and with the aid of my trowel, I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche.
I had scarcely laid the first tier of my masonry when I discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off. The earliest indication I had of this was a low moaning cry from the depth of the recess. It was NOT the cry of a drunken man. There was then a long and obstinate silence. I laid the second tier, and the third, and the fourth; and then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain. The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labours and sat down upon the bones. When at last the clanking subsided , I resumed the trowel, and finished without interruption the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh tier. The wall was now nearly upon a level with my breast. I again paused, and holding the flambeaux over the mason-work, threw a few feeble rays upon the figure within.
A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated -- I trembled. Unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me. I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs , and felt satisfied. I reapproached the wall. I replied to the yells of him who clamoured. I reechoed -- I aided -- I surpassed them in volume and in strength. I did this, and the clamourer grew still.
It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close. I had completed the eighth, the ninth, and the tenth tier. I had finished a portion of the last and the eleventh; there remained but a single stone to be fitted and plastered in. I struggled with its weight; I placed it partially in its destined position. But now there came from out the niche a low laugh that erected the hairs upon my head. It was succeeded by a sad voice, which I had difficulty in recognising as that of the noble Fortunato. The voice said --
"Ha! ha! ha! -- he! he! -- a very good joke indeed -- an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo -- he! he! he! -- over our wine -- he! he! he!"
"The Amontillado!" I said.
"He! he! he! -- he! he! he! -- yes, the Amontillado . But is it not getting late? Will not they be awaiting us at the palazzo, the Lady Fortunato and the rest? Let us be gone."
"Yes," I said "let us be gone."
"FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, MONTRESOR!"
"Yes," I said, "for the love of God!"
But to these words I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient. I called aloud --
"Fortunato!"
No answer. I called again --
"Fortunato!"
No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick -- on account of the dampness of the catacombs. I hastened to make an end of my labour. I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up. Against the new masonry I reerected the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them.

Sopportai i mille torti di Fortunato meglio che potei, ma quando si permise di insultarmi, giurai vendetta.
Tu, che conosci così bene la natura del mio animo, non crederai, tuttavia, che ho dato fiato alla mia minaccia.
IN TEMPO sarò vendicato; questo era un punto che avevo decisamente fissato -- ma la risolutezza con cui venne deciso precludeva il concetto di rischio.
Non solo devo punire, ma punire con impunità.
Un torto non è restituito quando la retribuzione sorprende chi lo restituisce.

Pochi italiani hanno lo spirito da veri virtuosi.

Nella pittura e ornamento con pietre, Fortunato, così come i suoi compatrioti, era un ciarlatano, ma in materia di vini antichi era genuino.
In questo aspetto non mi differenziavo tanto da lui; ero anch'io abbastanza esperto di vini italiani, e ne compravo diversi ogni volta che potevo.
Una sera durante la suprema pazzia della stagione carnevalesca, incontai il mio amico all'imbrunine.
Si avvicinò a me con eccessiva cordialità, perché aveva bevuto molto.
L'uomo faceva il buffone.
Indossava un costume con pantaloni aderenti e a strisce and sulla testa portava un cappello conico a sonagli.
Ero così contento di vederlo che credetti che non avrei mai smesso stringergli forte la mano.
Gli dissi -- "Caro Fortunato, che fortuna incontrarti.
Oggi stai proprio bene!
Ho ricevuto un barile di un presunto Amontillado, ma ho i miei dubbi."
"Cosa?"
disse lui, "Amontillado?

E proprio durante il carnevale?
"Ho i miei dubbi," risposi; "e sono stato così sciocco che ho pagato in pieno l'Amontillado senza consultarti in materia.

Mentre diceva tutto ciò, Fortunato mi prese per il braccio.
Dopo che si mise la maschera di seta nera ed avvicinò il suo domino alla mia persona, dovetti sopportarlo mentre mi spingeva verso il mio palazzo.
Non c'erano servitori in casa; si erano resi irreperibili per divertirsi durante il carnevale.
Dissi loro che non sarei tornato prima dell'indomani e gli diedi ordini espliciti di non muoversi di casa.
Sapevo bene che quegli ordini sarebbero stati sufficienti ad assicurarmi la loro immediata scomparsa, una volta e per tutte, appena avessi girato le spalle.
Presi dal candelabro a muro due torce, e dopo averne dato una a Fortunato ci chinammo attraverso varie sequenze di stanze verso il passaggio a volta che portava alle cantine.
Passai attraverso una lunga e contorta scalinata, chiedendogli di stare attento mentre mi seguiva.
Arrivammo dopo un po' alla fine della discesa, e insieme restammo in piedi sul terreno delle catacombe dei Montresor.
L'andatura del mio amico era traballante e i sonagli del suo cappello tintinnavano mentre avanzava.
"Il barile", disse.
"E' più avanti" dissi; "ma dai un'occhiata alle ragnatele bianche che luccicano nelle pareti di questa grotta".
Si girò verso di me e mi fissò negli occhi con due orbe velate che distillavano il catarro dell'intossicazione.

Eravamo passati attraverso pareti di ossa accatastate, con barili e grosse botti che vi si mischiavano, nei recessi più nascosti delle catacombe.
Mi fermai nuovamente, e questa volta osai afferrare Fortunato per il braccio al di sopra del gomito.
"Il salnitro!'
Dissi: "come vedi aumenta.
E' sospeso sulle volte come muschio.
Siamo al di sotto del letto del fiume.
Le gocce di umidità gocciolato tra le ossa.
Vieni, andiamo prima che sia troppo tardi.
La tua tosse" --
"Non è niente" disse; "proseguiamo.
Ma prima, un altro sorso di Medoc."
Aprii e gli porsi una bottiglia di De Grave.
La vuotò tutto d'un fiato.
I suoi occhi si illuminarono di una luce ardente.
Rise e tirò la bottiglia in alto con un gesto che non capii.
Lo guardai con sorpresa.
Lui ripetè il gesto -- un movimento grottesco.
"Non capisci?"
disse lui.
"No" risposi.
Allora non fai parte della confraternita."
"Come?"
"Non sei un massone."
"Sì, sì." dissi "sì! sì."
"Tu?"
Impossibile!
Un massone?"
"Un massone," risposi io.
"Dammi un segno," disse.
"Eccolo," risposi, tirando fuori una cazzuola da sotto le pieghe del mio domino.
"Stai scherzando," esclamò, indietreggiando un po' di passi.
"Ma proseguiamo verso l'Amontillado."
"Come vuoi," dissi, rimettendo l'attrezzo sotto il mantello, e offrendogli il braccio nuovamente.
Si ci appoggiò pesantemente.
Continuammo per la strada alla ricerca dell'Amontillado.
Passammo attraverso una serie di archi bassi, scendemmo, procedemmo, e discendemmo ancora, arrivammo in una cripta profonda, la cui aria viziata faceva brillare più che bruciare la nostra torcia.
Nel lato più remoto della cripta ne apparve una meno spaziosa.
Le sue mura erano allineate con resti umani fino alla volta di sopra, alla maniera delle grandi catacombe di Parigi.
Tre delle pareti di questa cripta interiore erano ancora decorate in questa maniera.
Le ossa della quarta parete erano state buttate giù, e giacevano promiscuamente a terra, formando in un punto un mucchietto di un certa grandezza.
Dentro le mura così esposte a causa delle ossa sparpagliate a terra, percepimmo un'altra nicchia interiore, circa quattro piedi di profondità, larga tre piedi, e alta sei o sette piedi.
Sembrava essere stata costruita senza nessuno scopo; formava solamente un intervallo tra i due supporti colossali della volta delle catacombe, ed era sostenuta da una delle circostanti pareti di granito massiccio.
Invano Fortunato, alzando la sua debole torcia, cercò di spiare le profondità della nicchia.
La sua estremità la debole luce non ci permise di vedere.
"Procedi," dissi; "qui dentro c'è l'Amontillado.
Per quanto riguarda Luchesi" --
"E' un ignorante," interruppe il mio amico, mentre faceva un barcollante passo in avanti, ed io subito dietro le sue calcagna.
In un istante raggiunse l'estremità della nicchia, e trovando il suo progresso arrestato dalla roccia, stupidamente si fermò perplesso.
In un momento lo incatenai al granito.
Sulla sua superficie c'erano due chiodi a U, che distavano l'uno dall'altro circa due piedi, orizzontalmente.
Da uno di questi pendeva una catena corta; dall'altra un lucchetto.
Dopo aver avvolto le catene attorno la sua cinta, le fermai in pochi secondi.
Era troppo stupito per fare alcuna resistenza.
Dopo aver ritirato la chiave, venni fuori dalla nicchia.
"Tocca la parete" dissi "con la mano; non potrai non notare il salnitro.
In verità è molto umido.
Ancora una volta, ti PREGO torniamo indietro.
No? Allora ti lascio davvero.
Ma prima ti devo porgere tutte le attenzioni in mio potere."
"L'Amontillado!"
proruppe il mio amico, non ancora ripresosi dallo stupore.
"Vero," dissi; "l'Amontillado."
Appena dissi queste parole mi diedi da fare tra le pile di ossa prima menzionate.
Mettendole da parte, svelai subito una certa quantità di pietre da costruzione e un mortaio.
Con questo materiale e con l'aiuto della mia cazzuola, iniziai vigorosamente a coprire l'entrata della nicchia.
Appena finii di disporre la prima fila del mio lavoro murario, scoprii che l'intossicazione di Fortunato era già in gran misura svanita.
La prima indicazione che ebbi di ciò fu un piccolo gemito proveniente dal fondo della cripta.
NON era il gemito di un uomo ubriaco.
Ci fu poi un lungo ed ostinato silenzio.
Stesi il secondo strato, ed il terzo, ed il quarto; e fu allora che sentii le vibrazioni furiose della catena.
Il rumore durò diversi minuti, durante i quali smisi di lavorare e mi sedetti sulle ossa al fine di potervi prestare attenzione con maggior soddisfazione.
Quando alla fine il rumore delle catene diminuì, ripresi la cazzuola e terminai senza interruzioni il quinto, sesto, e settimo strato.
Il muro era ora arrivato all'altezza del mio petto.
Mi fermai nuovamente, e tenendo la torcia sopra il lavoro murario, gettai alcuni deboli raggi di luce sulla figura all'interno.
Una successione di urla forti ed acute, prorompendo all'improvviso dalla gola della forma incatenata, parve spingermi indietro violentemente.
Per un breve scatto esitai -- stavo tremando.
Sfoderai il mio stocco, e iniziai a brancolare con esso verso la nicchia; ma un pensiero istantaneo mi riassicurò.
Misi la mano sopra la solida struttura delle catacombe, e mi sentii soddisfatto.
Mi riavvicinai al muro.
Risposi alle urla di colui che gridava.
Gli feci da eco -- mi sforzai -- le sorpassai in volume e forza.
Dopo aver fatto questo, colui che urlava si ammutolì.
Era arrivata la mezzanotte, e il mio compito si apprestava alla fine.
Completai l'ottavo, il nono, e il decimo strato.
Finii una porzione dell'ultimo ed undicesimo strato; rimase solo una pietra da incastrare e murare.
Mi sforzai sotto il suo peso; la infilai parzialmente nella sua posizione ultima.
Ma ecco che dalla nicchia venne fuori una risata forte che mi fece rizzare i capelli.
La seguì una voce triste, che difficilmente riconobbi come quella del nobile Fortunato.
La voce disse --
"Ha! ha! ha!
-- he! he!
-- davvero un bello scherzo -- un eccellente scherzo.
Ci faremo un sacco di risate una volta rientrati al palazzo -- he! he! he!
-- mentre ci beviamo il nostro vino -- he! he! he!"
"L'Amontillado!"
Dissi.
"He! he! he!
-- he! he! he!
-- sì, l'Amontillado.
"Ma, non si sta facendo tardi?
Non ci staranno aspettando al palazzo, la Signora Fortunato e gli altri?"
Andiamocene."
"Sì," dissi "andiamocene."
"PER L'AMOR DI DIO, MONTRESOR!"
"Sì," dissi, "per l'amor di Dio!"
E a quelle parole attesi una risposta ma in vano.
Divenni impaziente.
Chiamai ad alta voce --
"Fortunato!"
"Nessuna risposta.
Chiamai nuovamente.
"Fortunato!"
Ancora nessuna risposta
Gettai la torcia attraverso l'apertura che era rimasta scoperta e la lasciai cadere dentro.
Si sentì solo il tintinnio dei sonagli.
Il mio cuore si ammalò -- a causa dell'umidità delle catacombe.
Mi affrettai ad ultimare il mio lavoro.
Ficcai con forza l'ultima pietra nella sua posizione; la ingessai.
Sollevai il vecchio bastione di ossa contro il nuovo muro.
Per mezzo secolo nessun mortale li ha disturbati.
