Experiments focused on above-threshold ionization (ATI), the absorption by an atom of additional photons beyond the number required for ionization, have shown that the ejected electrons arrive at the detector with energies equal to or larger than the ponderomotive or “wiggle” energy in the oscillating field. The effect observed at optical frequencies is the disappearance of the lowest-energy electron peaks as the intensity of the ionizing field is increased. The usual explanation offered is that the ponderomotive potential raises the ionization threshold in the laser field, and when the ejected electron leaves the laser field the ponderomotive energy is converted to directed kinetic energy, precluding the observation of slow electrons. In photodetachment from a negative ion, where thresholds are experimentally distinct, the ponderomotive potential should be directly observable as a threshold shift. The shift in threshold should be the same for a negative ion as for a neutral atom, since in either case the liberated electron must acquire the ponderomotive energy. Measurements of such a threshold shift have been made in photodetachment experiments on negative chlorine ions, using as the perturbing field a 1064 nm laser field while probing the threshold with a weak uv laser. These experiments have demonstrated positive threshold shifts of up to 25 cm-1, which are, however, only about on-fourth of the predicted shift.
