Source text - English The conjunctiva provides a physical and physiological barrier against microorganisms and foreign bodies and also contributes to the ocular immunological defense. It constitutes a straightforward and accessible tissue for sampling and examination. Sampling indications include: changes in color, surface irregularities, thickening, or masses, ocular discharge and the identification of infectious organisms. Samples for conjunctival evaluation may be collected with exfoliative or abrasive techniques, aspiration, impression and conjunctival biopsy. The most commonly used and clinically useful laboratory methods for the assessment of conjunctival specimens are: microscopic examination of cytological preparations, culture and susceptibility testing, live virus isolation, polymerase chain reaction, fluorescent antibody testing and histopathological examination for snip biopsies. Findings like inflammatory or neoplastic cells, cellular alterations, inclusion bodies, microorganisms and associated host cellular responses, offer valuable information not only for localized ocular disorders, but for systemic diseases as well.

Source text - English A seizure is a sudden neurologic event that causes changes in consciousness and repetitive involuntary movements of parts of the body. Pets may experience seizures for a number of reasons, including ingestion of poisons, low blood sugar, inflammation or masses involving the brain, head trauma, severe liver disease, or epilepsy. At the beginning of a seizure, a pet collapses onto his/her side because seizures produce an altered state of consciousness. A seizure can then produce symptoms such as a rigid body posture; jerking, “running,” or “paddling” movements of the limbs; lifting of the lips and very rapid movements of the jaws; vocalizing; and loss of control of the bowels and/or urine.
The goal of managing a pet’s seizure at home is to provide a calm, quiet environment to allow the seizure to finish, and to intervene if the seizure lasts a long time.
• If there is a specific metabolic imbalance that has been documented previously and that can be reversed to help the seizure, then you should do so as soon as the seizure begins. A common example is a hypoglycemic seizure.
• If a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, you should notify your veterinarian (or animal emergency clinic if after hours) and bring your seizuring pet for immediate treatment.

Source text - English Depending on the severity of the eye problem, one or more medications may have been prescribed for your pet. The first step in handling eye medications is understanding how much of each medication to give, when to give them, and which ones (if any) should be refrigerated. This information is on the label of most eye medications and can be explained to you by a veterinarian if it is unclear.
It is common to be required to give eye medications from 1-8 times daily, equally spaced apart over time throughout the day. In some situations, continuing a schedule through the night may be important to prevent progression of an injury or infection and to potentially avoid eye surgery. In these situations, you should discuss with your veterinarian what the best schedule is.
It is also common to need to place an Elizabethan collar on your pet. This simple device can be tremendously helpful in protecting the eye from your pet’s desire to rub it, especially once it starts to heal and becomes itchy. These collars provide the best protection when they are worn 24 hours a day, since it only takes a few minutes to damage delicate tissue that has taken days to heal.
With long-nosed dogs, an E-collar can be kept on when administering eye medications, but with short-nosed dogs and many cats, it is easier to remove the E-collar and then replace it after giving the medication.
