decades before the Civil War was on the northern slope of Beacon Hill, in the shadow of the Massachusetts State House. Although some black Bostonians lived in the North End and in the West End north of Cambridge Street, over half the city’s 2,000 blacks lived on Beacon Hill just below the homes of wealthy whites. The historic buildings along today’s Black Heritage Trail® were the homes, businesses, schools, and churches of a thriving black community that organized, from the nation’s earliest years, to sustain those who faced local discrimination and national slavery, struggling toward the equality and freedom promised in America’s documents of
national liberty.

Solíamos reunirnos en la salita de estar del segundo piso de la oficina. Yo estaba sentada en un sofá azul bastante cómodo, con el computador en mis piernas. Jorge, en una silla aburrida bastante simétrica, con el fin de poder apoyar su computador en una mesita cerca de él; estaba ubicado frente a mí, un poco hacia la izquierda, y entre risas e ideas, creando los mensajes para las piezas de comunicación de una campaña promocional nueva, de pronto, algo me sucede, y entre frunciendo el ceño, abriendo y medio cerrando los ojos, elevo la mirada –muy al estilo pixelado– sobre su cabeza, buscando fijarla en el muro de color plano, blanco, que se encontraba al fondo y digo:–Estoy viendo como raro.
–¿Raro? –pregunta él, observándome.
–Sí, no sé, como con puntos, como…
¡psicodélico!
Él solo me mira fijamente sin saber que decir, hacemos silencio por un momento, entonces sonrío, parpadeo lento y sin darle mayor importancia al tema, continuamos con la reunión.
Fue como si por un momento, un filtro con efectos pasara sobre mis ojos, y así como así, se fuera. Sin embargo, como una –primera campana de alerta–, el hecho quedó rondando muy silenciosamente en mi cabeza, pero en ese momento sin preocuparme demasiado.
Translation - English On a typically uninspiring day in the first week of March, I was in a meeting with Jorge, a member of the creative team at the company I had been working at for the past two years. We used to meet in a small living room in the second floor of the office. I was seated in a comfy sofa, laptop resting on my lap. Jorge was sitting in an unremarkable symmetrical chair, using a nearby table for his laptop, across the sofa, a bit to the left. We were laughing and coming up with new ideas, creating the messaging for a new ad campaign, when something happened. All of a sudden, I found myself frowning and squinting, eyes half closed; I couldn’t quite understand what was happening, the scene before my eyes looked pixelated. I tried focusing my sight right above his head, on a white flat white wall behind him. I said:
–I’m seeing kind of weird.
–Weird? –he asked, looking at me.
–Yes, I don’t know, I’m seeing something like little dots? Sort of… psychedelic!
He stared at me, not knowing what to say. We remained quiet for a moment, then I smiled, blinked my eyes slowly and we proceeded with the meeting without paying much attention to what had just happened.
It felt as if, for a moment, a filter with special effects appeared before my eyes, and just as suddenly, it disappeared. The event drifted quietly in my subconscious—first warning sign—, but it didn’t amount to real concern at that point.
