Source text - Portuguese O Quinteto foi-me encomendado pela Camerata Senza Misura. com o objectivo de completar um programa no qual seria também tocado o Quinteto opus 39 de Prokofiev. Daí a estranha combinação de oboé, clarinete, violino, viola e contrabaixo, uma combinação única, para a qual só tenho conhecimento da obra do mestre russo. Curiosamente, Prokofiev, ao contrário de compositores como Stravinsky, Milhaud, Villa Lobos, Martinu ou Hindemith, não é conhecido pela excentricidade das suas escolhas instrumentais, nem por uma particular predilecção pela música de câmara. O facto de a minha peça ter sido encomendada para ser tocada juntamente com a de Prokofiev, para além do facto de em 2003 se terem comemorado os 50 anos da morte deste, influiu decerto na atmosfera do Quinteto, que funciona como uma suite de números contrastantes encadeados, cada um deles de carácter muito diverso (tal como o quinteto de Prokofiev, escrito para um bailado de uma trupe de bailarinos de circo). Um dos andamentos tomou mesmo o título que o bailado de Prokofief (que só se realizou uma vez) teve: Trapèze. Reina pois nesta obra uma atmosfera entre o melancólico e o burlesco, e uma escrita instrumental virtuosística, que tem afinidades quer com o carácter circeense do opus 39, quer com as acrobacias e tropelias de um Petruska…
Translation - English The Quintet was ordered to me by the Camerata Senza Misura with the purpose of completing a program in which the Quintet opus 39 by Prokofiev would also be played. Hence the strange combination of oboe , clarinet, violin, viola and bass, a unique combination that to the extent of my knowledge belongs solely to the work of the Russian master. Interestingly, Prokofiev, unlike composers like Stravinsky, Milhaud, Villa Lobos, Martinu or Hindemith, isn’t known by the eccentricity of his instrumental choices, not even by a particular fancy for chamber music. The fact that my play was ordered to be played with this work by Prokofiev, together with the commemoration of the 50 years of his death in 2003, surely influenced the atmosphere of the Quintet, which works like a suite of chained contrasting numbers, each one of a very diverse character (like the ballet-oriented Quintet by Prokofiev, written for a troupe of circus dancers). One of the movements took the same title as the ballet by Prokofiev (that was performed only once): Trapèze. This work is thus embedded by an atmosphere that lies between the melancholic and the burlesque, with a virtuosistic instrumental writing that ranges from the circus character of opus 39 and the acrobatics and ferocity of a Petruska…
