Norberto Staviski
Curitiba
Hoje a paranaense é a sexta empresa do País no setor.

Britânia fecha fábrica no Nordeste
Empresa concentrará produção em Joinville, 370 trabalhadores serão dispensados
José Pacheco Maia Filho
Salvador

Caio Cigana
Porto Alegre

Ajuda a financeiras

Enquanto a operação mundial perdeu US$ 30,8 bi, LAAM teve um azul de US$ 1,3 bi
Ana Paula Machado e Reuters

Deste valor, US$ 1,54 bilhão foi referente a produtos e US$ 106 milhões em relação a serviços. Nos últimos doze meses, as vendas somaram US$ 9,54 bilhões, contra US$ 11,2 bilhões no ano anterior.

Brasil busca oportunidades no mundo árabe

Jiane Carvalho e Iolanda Nascimento

Investimentos
“A recuperação do mercado chinês não indica tendência mundial”, ponderou o executivo. Inicialmente, o montante estava previsto em US$ 14 bilhões.

Bristol hotel chain expands in Northeast, targets 30% growth in 2009
Billings reached R$80 million (US$34.1 million) last year.
Norberto Staviski
Curitiba (PR)
The economic crisis is getting nowhere close to the plans of Paraná-based hotel chain Bristol Hotéis & Resorts. Having begun its activities in the sector in the 1990s, the company was concentrated in the South and Southeast of Brazil, but since 2007 the administrator has focused its expansion on incorporating its hotel banner in the Northeast. Early on this year, two more undertakings were added to the 19 that Bristol administers in eight Brazilian states: the Bristol Thermas Hotel & Resorts, located at Mossoró (RN), and the Bristol Poesy Casa do Mar Hotel, on Tremembé beach at Capuí (CE).
“In 3008 we closed the year with 1.1 million guests, and we plan to reach 1.6 million in 2009,” said Bristol commercial director Gilberto Cordeiro. “This period is a wonderful opportunity to grow, and in March we are going to dispute another undertaking of 300 apartments in Recife (PB). We aim to close administration contracts with five more projects by the end of the year, three of them in the Northeast,” he added.
In 2008, Bristol forecasted revenues of R$78 million (US$33.3 million) and eventually reported R$80 million (US$34.1 million) at the end of the year, maintaining a 78% average occupancy rate in its hotels. For 2009, just with the addition of the two new undertakings and the inauguration of a third one in sight, the company expects to surpass R$105 million (US$45 million) this year.
In the chain, Bristol is projecting increasing its offer of apartments by 13% and revenues by 30% this year. “If we get to 27 units with our banner by the end of the year, we will be among the five biggest hotel administrators in the country,” said Cordeiro. Today, the company, with its headquarters at Curitiba, is the sixth largest.

Britânia closes factory in Northeast
Company will concentrate production at Joinville (SC), and 370 workers will be dismissed.
José Pacheco Maia Filho
Salvador (BA)
Britânia do Brasil announced the closing of activities at its factory in the Northeast, located at Camaçari (BA), 40 kilometers from Salvador. Britânia do Nordeste produced fans, electric irons, mixers, liquifiers and juice squeezers. The end of the Bahian operation, according to sales administration manager Soila Vicente, stems from the company’s decision to concentrate all of its production units at Joinville, in Santa Catarina state in the South.
“Last October, we finished expanding the industrial plant there to 36,000 square meters, sufficient area to absorb the production from Camaçari,” he explained. According to Soila, the transfer of production will optimize company logistics and distribution, also integrating a process of restructuring industrial operations in keeping with the current world and national economic situations. Two years ago, the factory at São José dos Pinhais, in Paraná state, also was deactivated and the production was transferred to Joinville.
Although the information was not officially verified by the company, market sources said that the closing also was motivated by fiscal incentives and by difficulties that Britânia had been experiencing in the Northeast to place its products in the big retail chains of the region, which made it difficult to increase its market share there.
With the closing of the Camaçari factory, inaugurated in 2003 with investments of R$35 million (US$15 million) and expectations of accounting for 30% of total company production, 370 workers are now being dismissed. In an official communiqué, the company announced that “labor, fiscal and legal commitments and those with suppliers will be duly honored.” The announced closing of the factory, done on Ash Wednesday as the Carnival holiday ended, caught company employees by surprise. The Camaçari factory produced an average 1.2 million appliances a year, with distinction for ventilator fans, which were foremost among the products.

Dado Bier plans to triple production this year
Brewer will turn out 2 million liters in 2009.
Caio Cigana
Porto Alegre (RS)
Micro brewer Dado Bier, specialized in the premium niche, will resume production on an industrial scale with the launch of a liter bottle. The initiative will allow it to more than triple volume this year, jumping from production of 700,000 liters in 2008 to more than 2 million, according to estimates considered conservative. “It is a pilsner type beer to operate in the premium market,” said company president Eduardo Bier, who has as a partner and member of the board of directors his uncle and steelmaking industrialist Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter.
The decision about the packaging, according to the Rio Grande do Sul-based company, was made following observations of changes in the comportment of Brazilian consumers toward drinking more at home with family and friends, influenced by factors like the “dry law” to discourage drunk driving and good acceptance in Brazil of Uruguayan beers, traditionally sold in one-liter bottles. Bier also said that, with greater production volume, the company can cut unit costs and offer more competitive prices, thereby entering the dispute for the giant Brazilian beer market, estimated at 10.5 billion liters a year.
The businessman said that since 2005 he has been studying how best to return to big scale production, following an experiment begun in 2001 in which the giant multinational brewer Companhia de Bebidas das Américas (AmBev) worked for Dado Bier under a ruling by Brazil’s top antitrust agency, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), ordering it to cede capacity to a company with less than 5% of the market. Dado Bier won the competition at the time, but the distribution part, which also fell to AmBev, did not develop as expected.
Dado Bier went so far as to project the construction of a new brewery at Osório (RS), in association with brewer Colorado, of Ribeirão Preto (SP). However, in 2007 it was sought out by Cervejaria Riograndense, which had idle capacity and could lease its unit at Santa Maria (RS). With this, Dado Bier had to invest only R$5 million (US$2.1 million) in product development and the adaptation of production lines.

Confab modernizes line and doubles volume of investments
Company wants to raise technical level of products and lower production costs.
Luciana Otoni São Paulo (SP)
Steel tube manufacturer Confab Industrial will invest R$60 million (US$25.6 million) this year, more than double the R$25 million (US$10.7 million) applied in 2008. A good part of the resources will be spent on modernizing production lines to permit the manufacture of tubes using thicker steel, said Confab financial and investor relations director Marcelo Barreiro.
According to the executive, investments in the “UO” line, which indicates the tube format (also known as “SAW,” the English acronym pertaining to submerged welding), aim to maintain adequate technical levels, demanded by clients. The thicker steel could be used in higher pressure situations, like that experienced in deep water oil exploration by Petrobras. However, Barreiro stressed that in the case of the subsalt exploration projects off the southeast coast of Brazil, there are other demands in the composition. “We are not investing just to meet deep water exploration demands,” he insisted.
Besides modernizing the UO line, Confab also will invest in improving other lines, to advance the technical level of the products as well as lower production costs. “These improvements in production costs will increase the investment significantly,” he noted.
Despite the bigger investments, Confab admitted that 2009 will not have such favorable performance as in the recent past years. “We begin with an important order book, but the prospect is for less activity during the course of the year,” said the executive. “We have gone through a period of important investments in Brazil, in Argentina and also in Colombia, of gas distribution pipelines, but these investments already have been made now,” he declared.

Imports of cables and wires plunged 45%
Staff
São Paulo (SP)
The manufacturers of cables and wires closed 2008 with a US$181 million (US$77.2 million) trade deficit, the Sao Paulo State Electrical Energy Conductors Syndicate (Sindicel) disclosed yesterday. The imports exceeded external sales, “due to the unfavorable exchange conditions and the international financial crisis,” the entity explained in a communiqué.
The products brought from abroad totaled US$678.4 million last year, up 45% over 2007, when imports totaled US$467.6 million. Meanwhile, exports grew only 6%, rising from US$469.2 million in 2007 to US$497.5 million in 2008.
“Some economic measures, like releasing the use of export credit, reducing duties and granting greater benefits for exports are essential for the economic situation to change,” declared Sindicel president Sérgio Aredes in a communiqué. “We have to consider the impacts of the world crisis in the coming months and, primarily, the oscillating prices of commodities in the world market and the difficulties of finding financing, which translates as additional risk and the demand for more of companies’ own capital,” he said.

BB frees credit line for used car sales
Staff
São Paulo (SP)
Banco do Brasil (BB) announced yesterday that it has reopened its Workers Support Program (FAT) Sector Turnover program, which at this time will be destined for micro, small and midsized companies dealing in used vehicles – automobiles, small trucks and commercial vans.
According to BB, the line of credit was created by the Deliberative Council of the Workers Support Fund (Codefat), an organ linked with the Labor and Employment Ministry of the Federal Government, in order to meet the vehicle concessionaires’ need for operating capital.
The funds originate from the Workers Support Program (FAT). Loans will be charged the official long term interest rate of 11.206% a year plus service charges, corresponding to an effective rate of 1.4% a month. Terms will extend to as much as 24 months. Dealers will be able to contract operations of up to R$200,000 (US$85,324) each up to December 30, 2009.
Helping financial companies
Last year, BB also released R$4 billion (US$1.7 billion) for the automakers’ finance agencies in order to restore car sales at the height of the credit crunch.

Region of Brazil was only one to show profits in GM balance
While the world operation lost US$30.8 billion, LAAM was in the black by US$1.3 billion.

São Paulo and Detroit (USA)
Even with the slowdown of the Brazilian market at the end of last year, the LAAM administrative area (Latin America, Asia and the Middle East) of General Motors showed profits of US$1.3 billion in 2008 and invoicing of US$20.26 billion. The region was the only one with positive results for the automaker. In the world, GM lost US$30.86 billion, an improvement compared with the previous year, when losses totaled US$38.73 billion.
In the fourth quarter, GM LAAM registered adjusted losses of US$154 million (disclosed losses of US$181 million), below the US$424 million adjusted profits of fourth quarter 2007. According to the automaker, the fourth quarter results were affected primarily by the lower volume of the sector in Brazil, Venezuela and other key markets, and by the unfavorable foreign exchange rate, balanced by a more favorable mix of models and prices. For the year as a whole, GM LAAM sales volume was 1.3 million vehicles.
After disclosing the negative results, GM announced that it was waiting for auditors to issue an alert about the capacity of the company to remain viable at a moment in which it was experiencing the worst market conditions in decades.
The company reported quarterly loses greater than what had been expected and a decline of more than 30% in revenues. The automaker also warned that its pension plans for production and administration employees had a deficit of US$12.4 billion at the end of 2008.

New orders move Dura to resume strong production pace
After suspending investments, company will apply R$10 million (US$4.3 million) this year in Brazil.
Dura Automotive Systems, Brazilian subsidiary of the American corporation that produces components for the automotive industry, is beginning to return its production to normal levels with the increase of orders from automakers. Besides returning to work Monday through Saturday, the company already has some sectors operating three shifts, an expedient that had been suspended at the end of the past year because of the strong decline in the automotive sector. “The reduction of the IPI tax and the release of credit by Banco do Brasil (BB) already are reflected positively in sales and the reduction of stockpiles, and it is making the automotive assemblers resume production at a stronger pace,” said Dura do Brasil president Mário Buttino.
The auto parts company, which is installed at Rio Grande da Serra, in the ABC Paulista region, registered the biggest volume of orders made by Volkswagen, for the production of the new Gol model compact, and also from Ford, to supply the assembly line of the Ka subcompact. “There is preoccupation about the growth of sales in January and February, since you never know whether consumers are anticipating purchases because of the lower IPI tax and whether that incentive will be extended. But even so, I still think that a big part of the insecurity already has been overcome and the trend is to maintain the growth trajectory of the automotive sector,” Buttino insisted.
The Dura president’s estimation is that the automotive market will close 2009 with volume 15% below that of 2008, when 3.2 million vehicles were produced and 2.8 million were sold in the country. “In January, sales were better than expected. February is at the same level as last year. And in March they should also be positive because of the IPI tax cut,” he predicted. “If the resources to stimulate automotive sales continue, Brazil has conditions to rapidly overcome this phase,” concluded the executive.
After having prepared its factory for less intensive production, Dura redid its interior planning and is beginning to adapt it again to a new scenario, with only a slightly lower volume of orders. “The company’s priority now is to generate and maintain cash flow, attaining the maximum level of sales and delivering the product with quality and without delay,” he itemized.

Brazil and region leverage Telefónica’s performance
Growth motor in cellular and fixed-line telephony, paid TV and broadband is concentrated here.
Thaís Costa
São Paulo (SP)
The greatest growth that Telefônica experienced in Latin America during the course of 2008, and which was responsible for the positive performance of the world giant in the telecommunications sector in the fourth quarter of the past year, occurred in Brazil. Here, the Spanish telecom giant consolidated its leadership in mobile telephony with 45 million mobile connections, a total 34% greater in one year.
Along with the growth of the cellphone business, the Spanish company maintained its efforts to expand fixed line installations to include services of the internet, broadband and subscription TV.
With this, at the end of 2008 in the region there were 158.3 million connections, growing 24 million over 2007, an 18% increase. In the world, the total was 259 million, 13.2% more than one year before.
In cellular telephony, the operator registered net additions of 5.1 million connections in the fourth quarter in the region, and of 18.9 million during the accumulation of the year, growing 22.7% to a total 123.4 million clients. In a note that accompanied the balance, the company observed that the growth of clients was accompanied by a reduction of migration to other operators. All told in Brazil, Telefónica counted a total 60.7 million connections, 24% more than in 2007.
Besides the good performance of Vivo, the fixed-line operation of Telesp managed to attract a large portion of the growth in broadband activity (23% of the total), with 2.6 million new connections of this type. Pay TV business also saw dynamic movement, doubling to 472,000 clients.
In financial terms, the advance recorded in Brazil was also greater than in 2007. In the final quarter, the growth trend was maintained in new clients and in operational results (Ebitda). In the accumulation for the year, the operation in Brazil contributed with 8.606 million, 12.2% more than in 2007 and 15.8% more in the fourth quarter than in the same period a year earlier. Such performance was due to the positive behavior of Vivo and to the acceleration of Telesp’s entry into fixed-line operations.

Processors buy back sugar from export
Estimate is that in recent weeks contracts for some 600,000 sacks were cancelled.
Fabiana Batista
São Paulo (SP)
The Brazilian domestic market is paying more for sugar, so processors are cancelling their export contracts in order to place the product internally. Analysts estimate that about 30,000 tonnes of the product have been withdrawn from export channels to be resold on the domestic market.
“It is difficult to get a precise number. However, just my brokerage in recent weeks has done 20,000 tonnes of ‘wash-out’,” observed one trader, using the popular term for suspending physical delivery with financial liquidation of the difference between the contract price and the actual one). He noted that the greatest part of the cancelled volume pertained to crystal sugar, the demand for which is very heated in the domestic market at this time.
Arnaldo Luiz Corrêa, of Archer Consulting, explained that the cancellation of these contracts is done consensually with the buyer in exchange, obviously, for a financial compensation, generally equivalent to the difference between the contract price and the current market value. “The processing plants and the trading companies break their deal in order to place the product in another, more profitable market, in this specific case the domestic market,” said Corrêa.
Last Wednesday, the price difference between crystal sugar for export and for the domestic market was approximately R$1.50 (US$0.64) per 50-kilo sack, which means that local buyers were paying 3.2% more.
In fact, the domestic quotations are more heated than the international ones. Since the beginning of January, the price of the 50-kilo sack of sugar has risen 41%, according to the Center for Advanced Applied Economic Studies at the University of Sao Paulo (Cepea/Esalq/USP), going from R$33.04 (US$14.09) on January 2 to R$46.64 (US$19.89) yesterday.

Profits of Nossa Caixa grow 11.3% to R$646.5 million (US$275.8 million)
Iolanda Nascimento
São Paulo (SP)
The consolidated net profits of Banco Nossa Caixa, acquired in November by Banco do Brasil (BB), more than doubled in 2008, spurred particularly by the 47.6% expansion of credit operations and by the activation of R$441.1 million (US$188 million) in tax credits, which occurred largely in the second quarter. In the accumulated year, the institution registered profits of R$646.5 million (US$275.8 million), growing 113.3% over the R$303 million (US$129.3 million) of 2007. In the fourth quarter, gains reached R$51 million (US$21.8 million), compared with losses of R$15 million (US$6.4 million) suffered in the same period a year earlier but down 27.1% from the R$70 million (US$29.9 million) profits of the third quarter.
The total assets of Nossa Caixa rose 14.4% in a year and 1.6% between the third and fourth quarters, closing December at R$54.3 billion (US$23.2 billion). With these results, BB comes to have approximately R$625.6 billion (US$267.4 billion) in assets – considering 1) 50% of Banco Votorantim, bought by the publicly-owned bank this year, plus the numbers in the first half of 2008 of 2) Banco do Estado do Espírito Santo (Banestes) and of 3) Banco de Brasília (BRB), institutions that are being negotiated for incorporation. Subtracting the difference in this operation, BB moves to about R$7 billion (US$2.986 billion) short of Itaú Unibanco Banco Múltiplo, which with R$ 632,72 billion (US$269.9 billion) is the biggest bank in the country in assets, a position won after the merger, realized in November.
Milton Luiz de Melo Santos, director-president who will leave the command of the bank March 10, when BB begins consolidating the assets, said that the retraction of earnings between the third and fourth quarters last year was due primarily to increased provisions for civil contingencies relative to past government economic stabilization plans. These were stock shares held by the courts against losses caused by plans like the Bresser, Summer and Collor Plans and others. These expenses totaled R$644.6 million (US$275 million) last year, up 30.83% over 2007. Between fourth quarter 2007 and fourth quarter 2008, they rose from R$121 million (US$51.6 million) to R$141 million (US$60.2 million), with the number of processes swelling from 17,000 to 21,400. Melo Santos calculated that the trend now is to reduce the volume of the actions and consequently of the provisions, since it is believed that the bank has already passed the peak of the suits.

SulAmérica profits R$415 million (US$177 million). but with greater insurance costs (premiums minus indemnities)
Staff
São Paulo (SP)
With a push of more than R$30 million (US$12.8 million) coming from the sale of assets of Telemar in the middle of the past year, adjusted net profits of insurer SulAmérica jumped 29.4% in 2008 to R$415 million (US$177 million). Invoicings from premiums reached R$7.723 billion (US$3.295 billion) during the period, growing 10.2% over the R$7.005 billion (US$2.9 billion) verified in 2007.
Patrick de Larragoiti Lucas, president of the insurer, showed enthusiasm with the balance disclosed yesterday. “The result is more than we expected. We had record profits, and we hit a new level in terms of revenues. That is the fruit of various years of work improving risk underwriting policies, operational efficiency and relations with brokers,” he explained.
However, it was necessary to spend more to show those numbers. The index of general insurance cost in relation to the premiums gained, about R$7 billion (US$3 billion), rose from 68.2% to 71%. In areas where SulAmérica disputes the market and has accumulated revenues of more than R$6 billion (US$2.6 billion), in 2008 it also rose by that indicator. For the year, the insurance cost of the automotive segment rose from 60% to 64.1% and for health insurance from 73% to 76.3%.
Larragoiti argued that weather phenomenon and higher prices for medical products due to the stronger dollar explained the higher insurance costs. “The 71% represented a light increase. It is an acceptable number,” he said, noting the decline of the insurance cost in the life insurance segment (from 69% to 54%) and the closing of the combined index, which measures the operational efficiency of the insurer (variation from 97.8% to 98.4%). “The important thing is to always have this indicator below 100%, which means profitability before the financial results,” said the executive.

Conservative image helps EZT in the crisis
With a reduced number of launches, company is studying securitizing receivables.
Maria Luíza Filgueiras São Paulo (SP)
Land developer EzTec never dropped off the list of companies preferred by stock market investors who opted for the construction sector. When it opened its capital in 2007, it raised R$542 million (US$231.2 million) in the primary offer, taking advantage of the market window to capitalize itself with the attraction of more than 5,500 investors. Even the foreign investors, emboldened by the geographic dimensions and the housing deficit of the country, laid aside restraints in relation to the company. The principal factor was its reputation for conservatism, holding launches to less than ten a year, making a good portion of its sales with direct financing to the clients, avoiding leverage and retaining the receivables portfolio.
Now that caution has become an advantage. It is exactly this posture that has guaranteed the land incorporator’s tranquility amid the current turbulence, said Emílio Fugazza, EzTec director of finances and of investor relations. “A company little indebted is the master of its logic,” he declared. All the directors of the company are engineers and, if rising to administrative levels sounds good, the engineering is based on the concept of a secure foundation, said the executive, also a civil engineer. “The foreign investor asked questions, demanded to see more, but EzTec is not a company that has done thousands of things. It does a few and backs them.”
Fugazza affirmed that the company’s cash flow and receivables allow it to deliver all the undertakings sold, even if it does not manage to place debt securities or find financing. However, the current situation is different: The relationship with banks was tightened with the heightening of the financial crisis, so the company maintains weekly contact with each institutional partner to relate position in detail.

Advertising market growth slowed in 2008
Media investments during the year totaled R$58 billion (US$24.4 billion), according to Ibope.
Neila Baldi
São Paulo (SP)
The global financial crisis only arrived in the third quarter, but everything indicates that the advertising market already felt the effects since the beginning of 2008 – even though the advertising agencies insisted, in their balances and forecasts, that the past year was one of the best in history. According to data from Ibope Monitor, media investments in 2008 totaled R$58.1 billion (US$24.4 billion), up 12.09% over 2007. However, the sector’s growth rate was down from the 30.2% recorded in 2007.
Once again, television led the investments with 51% of the total (one percentage point more than the previous year) for R$29.8 billion (US$12.6 billion). Newspapers, ranked second in the media investments, lost market share, falling from 29% in 2007 to 26% last year and R$14.9 billion (US$6.3 billion).
The Ibope study also showed that the media that grew most last year was radio (22%), which totaled R$2.55 billion (US$1.07 billion). However, the report did not include numbers referring to the internet. On the other hand, investments in outdoor advertising fell significantly, almost 40%, to R$55.2 million (US$23.3 million).
The research also showed that retailing continues to be the sector that invests the most in the media, with R$15.59 billion (US$6.6 billion) in 2008, 27% of the market and 13.2% growth. The single biggest advertiser continued to be Casas Bahia, with gross investments of R$3 billion (US$1.3 billion), which was 11.2% more than it spent in 2007. Unilever followed in second place, while AmBev and Caixa switched positions at third and fourth. Fifth was Fiat, which in 2007 had been sixth.

Dudony puts stores in São Paulo up for sale

Curitiba (PR)
Dudony, the biggest retailer in Paraná state, headquartered in Maringá and with 110 stores in Paraná and neighboring São Paulo, announced that as part of its recovery plan it is putting all of its 11 stores in São Paulo up for sale due to the high cost of logistics of the operation. According to Dudony judicial advisor Cleverson Colombo, the objective is “to raise cash to pay the creditors.”
The company filed a petition for court-administered reorganization in the 1st District Civil Court of Maringá on December 19. In the “Diário de Justiça do Estado do Paraná” court gazette published December 24, justice Mario Seto Takeguma, of the 1st District Court, disclosed that the company owed almost R$104 million (US$43.8 million) to 250 creditors, including banks, manufacturers of household appliances, telephone companies and individuals. The four biggest creditors are Banco Cacique (owed almost R$17.6 million, equivalent to US$7.4 million), Banco Fibra (R$11.8 million, equivalent to US$4.97 million), Banco Industial (R$5.5 million, equivalent to US$2.3 million) and Banco Itaú (R$5 million, equivalent to US$2.1 million).
The stores that will be offered for sale in São Paulo are at Assis, Bauru, Botucatu, Cândido Mota, Ibitinga, Lençóis Paulista, Lins, Marília, Ourinhos, São Manoel and Tupã. According to the company, until now no one has expressed interest. The next step in the judicial recovery plan is to set a date for holding a creditors’ assembly, which should occur by the end of April. According to the company, 85 creditors have debts totaling a maximum R$20,000 (US$8.,428) and should receive their money immediately after the plan is approved.
According to a note from Takeguma, Dudony has experienced financial difficulties since 2005, when it expanded its store network with its own resources, committing operating capital, which forced it to seek help from the financial institutions.

Tourism on rails grows
Companies and prefectures discover that passenger trains still are good business.
Ana Carolina Oliveira
São Paulo (SP)
Railway transport lost its importance in government budgets some time ago. But at a time when the federal and some state governments are trying to bring Brazil a bullet train (to meet transport needs when it hosts the World Cup Soccer Championship in 2014), railway transport is regaining status, not as a principal means of transport but as a tourist attraction. In various locales, public and private companies maintain tourism railway stretches and guarantee that there is a public interested in paying, and paying well, to see Brazil via rail.
In 2008, according to the Brazilian Association of Cultural Tourism Train Operators (Abottc), some 3 million people travel every year by Brazilian touristic trains, a number that grows about 8% annually. Today, the country counts about 20 regular operations, plus some that are sporadic. There are others that have disappeared, like the famous Trem de Prata, which until November 1998 linked São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It succumbed to competition with the airlines, which at the time charged R$80 (US$33.71) per ticket on the busy “air bridge” between Brazil’s two biggest cities, while the “Silver Train” streamliner cost at least R$120 (US$50.56).
March is expected to mark the return of the traditional São Paulo state routes from the capital city’s Estação da Luz station to Paranapiacaba and to Jundiaí, deactivated in 2002. And according to Abottc, another ten concessions to operate touristic trains are expected to be granted this year. One of them is the Pantanal Express, operated by Serra Verde, which should be inaugurated on May 8. With a 220-kilometer stretch of track, leaving Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul state, and passing through Miranda and Aquidauana, it will restore life to part of the Brazilian stretch of the mythic “Train of Death” between Brazil and Bolivia (so dubbed for the many laborers who died of malaria during its construction).

Crisis fails to reach telephony suppliers and operators
Credit crunch and oscillating exchange rates remain threats to sector.
Thaís Costa
São Paulo (SP)
The telecommunications equipment industry sees no signs of crisis in the orders of fixed line and cellphone telephony operators, among them Telefônica, Oi, Vivo, TIM e Claro. “Until this moment, I expect that it will continue like this. No one has backed down from their programmed investments,” said Aluízio Byrro, president of the board of directors of one of the world’s foremost suppliers, Nokia Siemens na América Latina. He acknowledged that the equipment area feels the effects of belated reform in relation, for example, to cellphone apparatuses, which experienced a very bad January and is reporting a slightly better February.
But if people are putting off updating their cellphones, that does not mean they have stopped talking on the current model, something that would be pretty hard to imagine, the executive believes.
Perhaps 2009 will not show the vigor shown by 2008, when operators’ investments in fixed assets reached R$16 billion (US$6.7 billion). But even if that drops 10% for a total R$14.4 billion (US$6.1 billion), that will still be a very good year, since it will represent expansion in relation to 2006 and 2007, when expenditures on expanding infrastructure reached approximately R$12.5 billion (US$5.3 billion) a year, Byrro said in comparison.

Crisis carries Visteon to losses
Déborah Costa/InvestNews
São Paulo (SP)
Yesterday auto parts manufacturer Visteon announced net losses of US$328 million (US$2.53 a share) in the fourth quarter of 2008. One year earlier, the company reported fourth quarter losses of US$US$43 million (US$0.33 a share). In the same direction, the accumulation for the entire year saw the loss grow from US$372 million in 2007 to US$663 million last year.
Net sales dropped to US$1.65 billion during the final three months of 2008, representing a 42% decline compared with the same period a year earlier. Of this value, US$1.54 billion referred to product sales and US$106 million to services. For the entire year, sales totaled US$9.54 billion in 2008 compared with US$11.2 billion the previous year.
“The company’s fourth quarter results were significantly affected by the rapid deceleration of the world economy, which forced automakers to reduce production in almost all levels of the market,” said Visteon president Donald J. Stebbins.
Meanwhile, GM is expected to report today annual losses estimated at US$26.83 a share and a fourth quarter deficit of US$7.85 billion.

GM puts 900 more metalworkers on collective holiday at São José and São Caetano assembly plants
Automaker halts part of production for 30 days to realign output with demand.
Wagner Oliveira
São Paulo (SP)
General Motors granted collective holidays beginning today for another 900 employees – 600 in São José dos Campos and 300 in Sao Caetano do Sul (SP), both in the ABC ring of satellite cities surrounding Greater São Paulo. The automaker announced that the work paralysis is intended to adjust production to demand, that the 30-day holiday was already anticipated and includes employees of the company’s fixed workforce. Even so, the measure caused apprehension among union circles.
“The market has been recovering, but it does not seem to be enough for GM to keep the workers without collective holidays. That makes us very preoccupied,” said Aparecido Inacio da Silva, president of the Metalworkers Syndicate of Sao Caetano do Sul, which is associated with the Força Syndical federation.
In Sao Caetano, GM already has 1,600 metalworkers on collective holidays. They were hired on temporary contract for one year. The first contracts expire today, and the outlook is that they will not be renewed.
GM management in Brazil has a meeting scheduled next Thursday, March 5, with the unionists of São Caetano. “We are trying to dissuade the company from dismissing 1,600 temporarily hired metalworker from the third shift, but the talks are not going forward,” said Cidão.
GM directors already indicate that dismissal of the 1,600 is certain, since the market has not recovered to the level hoped for by the automaker. What the union had not expected is that some of the fixed personnel also are affected by the temporary production halt.
Two weeks ago, General Motors do Brasil (GMB) president Jaime Ardila was talking about market improvements with the government’s reduction of the Industrialized Products Tax (IPI) and also about the recovery of the automaker, which had fallen to a 17% market share in December but recovered to its customary 20% in January.
Cancellation of collective holidays at the company’s assembly plant at Gravataí, in Rio Grande do Sul state, also was a relief, signaling that the market could be recovering at a better pace than the company had hoped.

Vale accepts 10% price reduction, says Chinese association
Brazilian mining giant say that it will wait for competitors to close contracts for 2009.
Luciana Otoni Brasília
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (Vale) offered a 10% price reduction for iron ore, according to Zou Jian, president of Chinese Iron and Steel Association (Cisa). In an interview last Thursday with Dow Jones Newswire agency, the executive said that the mining company was prepared to immediately sign a contract to supply iron ore if the Chinese steelmakers accepted a 10% price reduction.
According to Zou Jian, the steelmakers maintain their demand for a 30% to 50% reduction from the record prices of 2008. According to the Chinese executive, GHP GBilliton and Rio Tinto have not yet made a price proposal.
However, the official position of Vale is to wait for the movement of its competitors. During the presentation of the annual results last Friday, the Brazilian mining company that it will cede its role as the price setter to its British-Australian rivals this year. “Our position is to wait for the talks between other suppliers and our clients to understand exactly what the outlook is to be drawn from this discussion,” said Vale executive-director Fabio Barbosa. “Our viewpoint is that the benchmarking system is the best arrangement for our industry, both for the steelmakers and for iron ore suppliers,” said the executive during a press conference.
Last year, Vale closed a deal for price increases for iron ore fines and pellets of 65% and 71% over the 2007 levels respectively. Rio Tinto and BHP, which prolonged the negotiations and pressed for still greater adjustments due to their geographic proximity to China, managed an average 85% increase, which broke the tradition of the benchmark system, in which ore suppliers follow the first agreement closed that year.
In recent years, Vale led the process. However, after the Australians secured higher prices, Vale tried to get an additional 10% increase in mid-2008, which provoked protests and an informal boycott on the part of the Chinese steel mills. At the beginning of this year, the international press announced that the Chinese would accept a lesser reduction on the part of the Brazilian minerals company.

Energy marketers target biomass generation
Between 2005 and 2008, sugar-and-alcohol mill operators raised energy production based on sugarcane trash by 20%.
Roberta Scrivano
São Paulo (SP)
The expanding interest of the sugar-and-alcohol production companies in investing in the production of electrical energy is attracting the attention of companies that market electrical energy to the big free market consumers, in an environment that is not linked to any distributor. “We always focus our energy purchases on the Small Hydroelectric Centers (PCHs), but now the interaction is to buy more electricity generated from biomass by the sugar-and-alcohol plants,” said Paulo Toledo, partner-director of energy marketing company Ecom Energia.
The company is the first in the free market (which has no contractual ties to distributors and represents 25% of total electrical energy sales in Brazil) to open a subsidiary in the interior of São Paulo state to strengthen the relationship with the sugar-and-alcohol sector. “We are setting up a structure in Catanduva, a locale where there is a concentration of cane processing plants,” said Toledo. The executive explained that Ecom Energia has a “strong relationship with the PCHs, which will be maintained.” “However, we want to increase 100% the volume marketed of biomass energy to about 150 megawatts (MW) average,” Toledo estimated.
Marketer Comerc, which also already sells biomass energy, sees in energy generated from cane trash a good opportunity to increase its portfolio of supplies. “The Brazilian potential from this source is very big and it needs to be made use of,” said Comerc president Marcelo Parodi. Last year the company sold 20 MW average of biomass energy, and this year it already has contracted 34 average MW. The outlook of Comerc is that this number could reach at least 80 MW average by the end of 2009.
According to a study by Instituto Acende Brasil, with the existing Brazilian sugarcane processors, the country has the potential to generate more than 14,000 MW a year. Today the participation of biomass energy in the Brazilian electrical energy matrix is 4.31% of the total, being 263 processing plants, according to the National Electrical Energy Agency (Aneel).
In spite of the still limited share of biomass in the total share, the growth between 2005 and 2008 is very significant, already growing 20% during that period.

Lula signs concessions contracts today for Madeira river power lines
Transmission lines will extend 2,300 kilometers to Araraquara.
Ana Carolina Oliveira
Brasília
The contracts for the transmission lines extending from the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric dams on the Madeira river in Rondônia state in the West to Araraquara in São Paulo state in the Southeast will be signed today by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, by Edvaldo Santana, interim director of the National Electrical Energy Agency (Aneel), and by representatives of the companies that won the right to build and operate the undertakings. Also participating in the signing ceremony will be presidential Chief-of-Staff Dilma Rousseff and Mines and Energy (MME) minister Edison Lobão, highlighting the importance of the contracts. This is one of the biggest projects of the federal government’s Program to Accelerate Growth (PAC).
The auction for the transmission lines concession from the Madeira were held November 26. It had the lowest markup for the electrical energy sector of all the auctions ever conducted by this government, just 7%. In all, seven lots were offered which wound up being one private company and two consortiums with the participation of state-owned companies.
The Integração Norte Brasil consortium, composed of Eletronorte, Eletrosul, Abengoa Brasil and Andrade Gutierrez, picked up three lots; the consortium composed of Madeira Transmissão, made up of Furnas, Chesf and Cteep, won two; and the private company Cymi Holding took the final two.
The transmission lines will extend 2,300 kilometers, linking the hydroelectric installations on the Madeira and Araraquara municipality in the interior of São Paulo. Once the two dams are completed, they will generate about 6,000 megawatts (MW) of energy.
The entry into commercial operation of the lines is expected within 36 to 50 months, counting from the signature of the concessions contracts. The investments in all the lots will total R$7.2 billion (US$3 billion). The auction winning consortiums can invest in the transmission lines for 30 years. After that, the lines will revert to government control.

Brazil seeks opportunities in Arab world
Stronger euro opens space for good business for Brazilian agricultural products.
Roberto Tenório
Dubai *
The strengthening of the euro in relation to the Brazilian real has created new opportunities for the South American country’s agricultural products in the Arab market in 2009. Just a few months ago, specialists were observing that the efficiency of the European bloc logistics, favored by proximity to the Arabs, reduced the potential competitiveness of Brazilian products in the Middle East. However, they confirm now that the situation should be reversed in 2009 because of the higher cost now of acquiring merchandise on the old continent, inflated by the stronger European currency in relation to those of the Arab bloc.
Brazilian farmers and businessmen are preparing to hitch a ride on this opportunity and thereby expand or even open new markets to recoup their profit margins, which were squeezed after the historic price peak that commodities reached in 2008. Moreover, the Arabs are rising as an option in relation to the traditional American and European markets, both big buyers of Brazilian products which saw their markets hit hard by the crisis.
AL-Ayed Mohammed, international imports director of Awrad Aldana Est., headquartered in Saudi Arabia, affirmed that the Arab market is extremely dependent on imports and the strengthening of the euro has created an opportunity for the Brazilian production chain. “We import 90% of the food that we consume. This is the best opportunity for Brazil now because the level of confidence in the Asiatic countries has been hit, too, and there are no other markets looking for products,” he said.
The executive also said that the demand for food in the region has grown gradually but, he noted, Brazilian exporters have not shown sufficient flexibility in negotiations. Unlike Brazilian businessmen, the Europeans know how to bargain, he declared. “The Brazilians need to learn how to fight to place their products on the market and not just to promote them.”

Shares fall with results below expectations
Vinícius Pinheiro
São Paulo (SP)
The 2008 balance of Itaú Unibanco was received by the financial market with typical coolness on Ash Wednesday, marking the end of traditional revelries for the pre-Lenten Carnival. On the floor of the BM&F Bovespa, quotations of Itaú preferred stock (PN) dropped 1.09% from the previous trading session and those of Unibanco slipped 1.07%. (On March 31, they will be converted and sold as a unit.) The performance ran against the trend of Bradesco and Banco do Brasil (BB), both of which closed higher.
Like its competitors, Itaú Unibanco presented increased expenses from setting aside reserves to handle dubious loans in the fourth quarter, provoking a reduction in the combined profits of the two banks, which reached R$10.5 billion (US$4.4 billion) – excluding one-time effects. “During the merger period, there was talk of R$11 billion (US$4.6 billion) in profits, which wound up not being confirmed because of changes in the economic scenario at the end of the year,” observed Jay7me Alves, an investments analyst with Spinelli brokerage.
The market also considered as particularly bad the 12.5% increase in so-called “non-interest” expenses, which included the payroll and administrative expenditures. The greater expenses were not accompanied by the revenues generated by services and rates, which grew only 1.8% last year, due among other factors to the standardization of such charges imposed by the Brazilian Central Bank (BC).
The Spinelli analyst considered that the administration of the rates revenues will be one of the challenges of the new combined institution this year, since the BC ordered a freezing of those rates for a year as one of the conditions for approving the merger of the banks.

Anbid analyzes Redecard offer
Jiane Carvalho e Iolanda Nascimento
São Paulo (SP)
Redecard filed a petition yesterday with the National Investment Bank Association (Anbid) for the simplified analysis of a secondary public offer of stock shares issued by the credit card administrator and currently held by Citibank. This will be the first simplified analysis of a stock offer to be done by Anbid after Instruction 471 last August permitted partnerships to conduct this type of analysis. Since it closed an agreement with the Market Regulatory Agency (CVM), Anbid has done only two analyses, of Votorantim Finanças and of Bradespar, but both were for the emission of debentures.
The objective of Instruction 471 , which refers only to secondary offers, is to facilitate the procedures of analyzing and registering such offers. After petition Anbid, the CVM has seven days to make its ruling and defer, or not, the request for registration. If it judges it to be necessary, the CVM can subpoena additional documents and clarifications besides those already offered, as in the case of Citibank.
The American bank, which has been spinning off assets all over the world in order to cover losses, holds 17% of the Redecard stock, registered by the commercial establishments and responsible for raising business for the MasterCard and Diners Cçlub International credit cards in Brazil. Itaú, which under a stockholders’ agreement has first call to buy the stock from Citibank, has 46.42% of the equity, already added to the papers held by Unibanco.
During the press conference to disclose the Itaú Unibanco balance, Roberto Setubal, executive-president of the institution, affirmed that the bank is looking for partners for Redecard. “At the moment, I do not imagine Itaú assuming control, since our interest is in finding one or two big banks to come into the Redecard capital,” said Setubal, without discarding the purchase of part of the Citibank holdings. “Eventually, we could buy the stock, but only in a temporary manner,” he suggested.
In March 2008, already with its balance in the red, Citibank made a secondary offer of part of the Redecard stock, reducing its holdings from 23% to the current 17%. With the sale, the American bank raised more than R$1 billion (US$421 million). The coordinator leading the new offer will be Citibank itself. Ityaú and Unibanco also will act as coordinators.

Health insurance buoys Unimed earnings
Maria Luíza Filgueiras São Paulo (SP)
Seguros Unimed passed almost untouched through the beginning of the world financial crisis in 2008, advancing in new insurance sales and boosting its billings 28.77%, raching R$542.23 million (US$228.5 million) in net premiums. The Unimed Seguros Saúde health insurance division lead the gains, invoicing R$351.19 million (US$148 million), up 37.05% over 2007.
“The health sector revenues represented more than 60% of the total and has been growing at a faster pace than Unimed Seguradora (life and wellbeing) in the past five years,” declared Unimed president Dalmo Claro de Oliveira. The movement could be attributed to a trend among corporations to unify their nationwide health services in one provider, rather than distributing them by states and geographic regions, and to the preference of companies for globalized health insurance.
“The multinationals, primarily, prefer the insurance with the greatest flexibility of choice in the service provider and reimbursement for participants, items that are not provided for in the health plan and limit the user to a certified network,” he compared.
The advance gave Seguros Unimed consolidated net profits, uniting health, life and wellbeing products, of R$37.33 million (US$15.7 million). A slower growth rate (9.23%) in billings was attributed to greater indemnity payments, which rose almost three percentage points from one year to the next, from 63.8% to 66.6%. According to the company president, one of the reasons was the extension of coverage imposed by the National Health Agency (ANS), including more procedures, like new technologies, examinations and therapies.
If the past year met the company’s expansion forecasts, the impact of the global economic cooling could begin to affect its business in this first half of 2009. Unimed has a growth projection of 15% to 20% for revenues this year, according to budget forecasts outlined in January. “But this probably will have to be revised by May, with more precise indications of the performance in March in April,” said Oliveira.

Digitro picks exports as its means of expanding sales
Rest of Latin America and Portuguese-speaking Africa offer potential markets.
Juliana Wilke
Florianópolis (SC)
Dígitro Tecnologia, of Florianópolis (SC), plans to increase its exports of call centers and convergent telephony networks by 40% in 2009 to the rest of Latin America and to Portuguese-speaking African countries. In 2008, the company exported R$505,330 (US$211,435). This year, it will direct exports toward countries of greater potential consumption, like Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile, Mozambique and Angola. “The recent strengthening of the dollar puts us in a more advantageous position, and it is going to help us to recoup profitability,” said Dígitro international business director Flávio Moritz.
The global economic crisis did not affect the company’s internationalization plans and the investments underway, totaling R$15 million (US$6.3 million), in modernization and expansion of the headquarters. “Exactly at the moment of crisis, the Dígitro conjunction of technologies and solutions is gaining visibility in the corporative market, which is looking for tools capable of generating increased productivity and lower costs,” said Moritz.
Dígitro invoiced R$96.33 million (US$40.3 million) in 2008, less than the forecasted R$120 million (US$50.2 million) due to the crisis, which led to the postponement of some projects, primarily in the government area. But now the company expects to attain or surpass that goal in 2009.
Dígitro has been exporting since 2003, and it began in response to market demand. “First, the foreign clients came after our solutions. We did not yet have a product adequate for the external market,” he recalled. But the growth occurred effectively, said Miritz, when various Brazilian clients, like Mafrig, Datasul and Santana Têxtil, also began internationalizing and called for the presence of Dígitro in their subsidiaries.
Moritz affirmed that demand was great, which led the company to adopt its products to the language specificities and set up a strong post-sale service. “We had to provide for regionalisms, local culture and technical specifications,” said the executive. He noted that the way of calculating telephony costs in other countries is completely different from that in Brazil. “For example, in each market a PABX has different connections with the local network, and there are specific processes for registration and certification, like the radio frequency interfaces,” he said.

Polemic about the stage of Brazil’s carbon technology
José Aparecido Miguel
Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
The criticisms of chemical engineer Luiz Depine de Castro about Brazilian backwardness in the area of carbon technology, in an interview with the “Gazeta Mercantil” and “Jornal do Brasil,” has provoked the reaction of Marcos Pimenta, titular professor of the Physics Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and coordinator of the National Research Network in Carbon Nanotubes, with 40 researchers in eight states of Brazil.
Depine, a graduate of the Military Institute of Engineering, with a doctorate in Materials Sciences from the University of Bath, in the United Kingdom, said about the development of carbon materials that Brazil’s position is practically nill. “With the exception of the nucleus at the Army Technology Center and a few researchers in Brazilian universities, no one else is developing these materials,” he asserted in the affirmation contested by Pimenta.
“It is a great untruth and a great injustice to various groups throughout Brazil, working with carbon nanomaterials. During the latest meeting of the Network in Curitiba (September 2007), 130 Brazilian researchers participated and almost 100 papers were presented. The international impact of this work made it possible for us to organize in 2008 the most important international conference on carbon nanotubes,” commented Pimenta, who questioned the scientific production of Depine, saying that he was not familiar with it.
Depine, president of the Brazilian Carbon Association (ABC) and a consultant of the Army Technology Center, said that the crux of Pimentel’s criticism is the sentence cited, when he referred to research and development “in all areas of carbon materials and not just nanotubes.”
“I cite some numbers that support my claim. In the area of carbon materials, excepting carbon nanotubes, not more than two dozen patents have been registered in the country in the past five years. At the latest international congress on carbon, which occurred in Japan, among more than 1,300 papers, only five were from Brazil. Except for the multinational that I mentioned in the interview, there are no factories here producing carbon materials of medium and high aggregate value.

Vale foresees record sales to China
Carina Urbanin/ Invest News
São Paulo (SP)
Fábio Barbosa, executive-director of finances at the giant Brazilian mining company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (Vale), said Friday that the company expects to deliver 30 million tonnes of iron ore to China in the first quarter of 2009. “It will be the company’s biggest minerals sale every registered to China,” declared Barbosa. According to the executive, the company’s total sales are projected at 50 million tonnes during the period.
“Sales to China correspond to almost 60% of the total in the quarter,” he said. In the same period last year, company sales totaled 76.6 million tonnes of iron ore. By the fourth quarter of 2008, they had fallen to 54.9 million tonnes. At that time, the Chinese market was experiencing a tremendous cooling, recalled Barbosa. Vale iron ore sales to the country during the period totaled 12.1 million tonnes, less than half the 25 million tonnes sold to it in fourth quarter 2007.
Investments
“The recovery of the Chinese market does not indicate a worldwide trend,” the executive cautioned. During a press conference, Barbosa also said that the company plans to invest US$11 billion during 2009. Initially, the value had been planned to be US$14 billion.
According to Barbosa, there are no cancellations seen on the horizon. “We are working with cost reductions, not reduced projects,” he stressed. “The major part of the investments is to be made in Brazil, and they have had their costs reduced with the strengthening of the dollar vis-à-vis the real,” he said. According to the director, 70% of the investments will be destined for Brazil, a total of almost US$7.7 billion.
Barbosa noted that the company is interested in investing in the purchase of assets in the areas of coal, copper and fertilizers, in addition to the iron ore which is its principal market.
As for the fertilizers sector, he reiterated that Vale production corresponds to 10% of Brazilian national demand. “There is still a lot of growing to be done in this market,” he observed.
Barbosa also said that the company has no plans for layoffs in 2009. In 2008, Vale dismissed 1,300 employees and contracted almost 5,000. The director made a point of recalling that 38,000 company employees had job stability contracts good through March 31.

Director tells how Ford is administrating the crisis
Vagner Galeote: “Sometimes we placed an order on Monday and by Friday we called to cancel it.”
Deborah Costa/ InvestNews
São Paulo (SP)
With the intensification of the global financial crisis, which some thought would be a “mild storm,” industry has been impacted full force. One of the sectors of the economy that was most strongly affected was the automotive. Along with it, the supply chain has come to face a series of challenges and adaptations.
“With the turbulence in the markets, we had to make adjustments with our suppliers. Sometimes we placed an order on Monday and by Friday we called to cancel it,” said Vagner Galeote, Ford purchasing director for South America.
The problem is that, with the aggravation of the crisis, the automakers had no way to pay their suppliers and wound up cancelling orders, causing a domino effect within the industry. Currently, Ford works with 362 suppliers in Brazil. “We see the crisis heating up worldwide competition; as a result we have to invest in new products and work with innovation, producing good cars that meet the demands of society. Like, for example, working to reformulate a car that fits the client’s current needs,” said Galeote.
To get through the crisis, Ford opted to reduce and avoid unnecessary costs. “The situation is forcing us to work with more deliberation and in innovative ways to get to the final results with success,” said the purchasing director.
Without disclosing figures, Galeote declared that the investments for this year in products have been maintained, even with the global financial crisis. This because with new models or at least some alterations in a vehicle, the product becomes more attractive and competitive in the market. “We could cut everything, except the resources destined for this segment. In other difficult periods, we already have seen that you do not get out of a crisis without investing in new products and technologies,” he stressed.
Speaking of cuts, Galeote said that the company prefers to resort first to the labor laws, with collective holidays, temporary releases or reductions of the work week and then, only as a last resort, to layoffs.

Difficult phase ends for auto parts
Nightmare has passed and sector, even on a lesser scale, already is resuming activities.
Sonia Moraes
São Paulo (SP)
The auto parts industry already is beginning to resume the level of activity because of the normalization of automotive production. The Brazilian company Eletromecânica Dyna, which produces windshield wipers, and the Brazilian subsidiary of the German group Elring Klinger, which makes engine head parts and heat deflectors, already has positive signals from assemblers for the coming months, which has led it to forecast that domestic market sales this year could reach levels equal to those of 2007, when 2.46 million new vehicles were tagged in the country.
“We still are at volumes 20% below 2008, but the outlook is positive because the difficult phase has passed. With the government’s reduction of the Industrialized Products Tax (IPI) and the release of lines of credit to finance new automobiles, the market has resumed sales, and we already have orders for the production of 10,000 cars a day,” said Eletromecânica Dyna commercial director Celso Liberal.
Elring Klinger, which supplies all the automakers in the country except Toyota, had to cancel collective holidays scheduled for this week and suspend a workweek reduction in order to fill orders that are beginning to come in from the assembly plants.
The company, which at the end of last year eliminated its third work shift and dismissed 40 people, is considering rehiring them if the volume of orders from the automakers continues to grow. “The market is beginning to recover. Some automakers cancelled collective holidays during Carnival week and are even working Saturdays to supply the dealership networks, which already are lacking some models for immediate delivery,” observed Elring Klinger commercial director Luiz Alberto Thimm Mirara.
