I have been involved in languages since my school and university years. My qualifications include a BA Hons degree from Lancaster including linguistics, applied linguistics, French and Italian studies.
My professional experience started as a freshly qualified EFL teacher in 1990. Since then I have worked in publishing (10 years for Oxford University Press, with whom I still collaborate on both writing and translation projects), as a University teacher (Naples and Salerno universities), for the Italian National Military School of Languages, for private language schools and, currently, for the Hospital in Perugia and for state schools, as an English Teacher. My experience as a translator has developed parallel to that as a teacher, including translating work in academic fields through university contacts, wordlists and teacher's notes for EFL coursebook publishing, industry (manuals for cement and pharmaceutical companies), publishing (history and art books on local Italian heritage) and countless small jobs including marketing brochures, websites and legal and business correspondence. As a consecutive interpreter I have worked as an assistant on documentaries with a BBC film crew, and with an Australian film crew, as a consultant to a wine company and on the European Under 18 Volleyball championships. I frequently visit France for pleasure, but also to keep my language skills up to standard.
After 20 years working in languages there are surely countless other experiences I have forgotten to mention. Specialising has not been straightforward, like many translators I accept work when the conditions are right and learn as I go. In the future I intend to pursue work in educational publishing and the food & wine trade, and possibly also in the film industry.
