El ex presidente peruano, de 70 años, ha sido sentenciado culpable por su responsabilidad en dos matanzas y dos secuestros ocurridos durante su mandato

Un tribunal ha sentenciado este martes culpable al ex presidente Alberto Fujimori por crímenes contra los derechos humanos. El presidente de la sala penal de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, César San Martín, ha declarado que los cuatro cargos contra Fujimori están probados "más allá de toda duda razonable", por lo que se le ha condenado a 25 años de cárcel. Ante la decisión, Fujimori ha interpuesto de inmediato un recurso de nulidad.
Fujimori, de 70 años, estaba acusado por su responsabilidad en las matanzas de Barrios Altos y La Cantuta, que dejaron 25 muertos en 1991 y 1992, y en los secuestros de un periodista y un empresario en 1992. San Martín ha precisado que el grupo militar encubierto Colina, autor material de las matanzas, cometió 50 asesinatos en 15 meses de actividad y que el Gobierno de Fujimori desarrolló una febril actividad para ocultar los hechos una vez que se conocieron.
Esta es la primera vez que un ex mandatario elegido democráticamente en América Latina es declarado culpable en su país por violaciones a los derechos humanos.
Fujimori, quien durante gran parte de su mandato (1990-2000) disfrutó de enorme popularidad por haber derrotado a los grupos guerrilleros Sendero Luminoso y el MRTA y además haber estabilizado al país en materia económica, se vio involucrado en graves escándalos de corrupción hacia el final de su mandato, por lo que huyó del país en el 2000 y se refugió en Japón -país de origen de sus padres- durante varios años antes de regresar a Perú a enfrentarse a la justicia.
El ex presidente siempre ha defendido su inocencia y se ha escudado en que tuvo que "gobernar desde el infierno", como dijo durante el juicio, cuando describió cómo se abocó a la lucha contra Sendero Luminoso -que durante la década de los 80 y comienzos de los 90 mantuvo a Perú en caos con ataques a infraestructuras y atentados- y el Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaro (MRTA), que protagonizó un espectacular secuestro en la residencia del embajador japonés en Lima en diciembre de 1996, y que terminó con un rescate de película más de cuatro meses después.
Pero su Gobierno se vio salpicado de denuncias de violaciones de derechos humanos llevados a cabo por el Servicio de Inteligencia liderado por Vladimiro Montesinos, quien también afronta varios juicios por estos delitos y corrupción.
Este juicio, que se ha desarrollado a lo largo de 15 meses, puede tener amplias implicaciones políticas ya que el actual mandatario, Alan García, también ha sido acusado de violación de derechos humanos durante su primer Gobierno en la década de 1980, antes de que fuera reemplazado por Fujimori, quien aún cuenta con amplia popularidad en algunas zonas de Perú, sobre todo las más pobres.
La hija de Fujimori, Keiko , es una parlamentaria muy popular en Perú y podría tratar de usar la condena de su padre para atraer simpatizantes de cara a sus propias ambiciones presidenciales en dos años. Algunas encuestas colocan a la joven -que fue la congresista peruana más votada en 2006- al frente de las preferencias electorales. De hecho, hoy decenas de simpatizantes de Fujimori se han congregado a las afueras de la sede del tribunal para mostrar su apoyo al ex mandatario.

A tribunal found ex-president Alberto Fujimori guilty this Tuesday for crimes against human rights. The President of the criminal branch of the Supreme Court of Justice, Cesar San Martin, has declared that the four charges against Fujimori have been proved “beyond all reasonable doubt”, for which he has been condemned to 25 years in prison. Upon the decision, Fujimori immediately filed an appeal for annulment.
Fujimori, who is 70 years-old, had been accused for his responsibility in the killings that left 25 dead in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta neighborhoods in 1991 and 1992, and in the kidnappings of a journalist and a businessman in 1992. San Martin stated that Colina, the covert military group that perpetrated these killings, committed 50 murders during 15 months of activity, and that Fujimori's government developed a policy to feverishly conceal the facts once they were known.
This is the first time that a democratically elected ex-president in Latin America has been declared guilty in his own country for human rights violations.
Fujimori, who during most of his term in office (1990 – 2000) enjoyed enormous popularity for having defeated the Shinning Path and MRTA guerilla groups, as well as for having stabilized the country economically, became involved in serious corruption scandals towards the end of his term, for which he fled the country in 2000 and sought asylum in Japan- his parents' country of origin- for several years, before returning to Peru to face justice.
The ex-president has always maintained his innocence and shielded himself with having to have “governed from Hell”, as he said during the trial while describing how he tenaciously committed himself to the fight against the Shining Path- that during the decade of the 80's and early 90's kept Peru in a state of chaos with attacks against infrastructure and assassination attempts- and the Tupac Amaro Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), which orchestrated a spectacular kidnapping at the Lima residence of the Japanese Ambassador in December of 1996 that ended in a movie-like rescue more than four months later.
But his government was showered with accusations of human rights violations committed by the Intelligence Service under the leadership of Vladimiro Montesinos, who is also facing several trials for crimes and corruption.
This trial, which has been ongoing for 15 months, could have serious political implications since the current President, Alan Garcia, has also been accused of human rights violations committed during his first term in office during the 1980's prior to being replaced by Fujimori, although he still enjoys considerable popularity in some areas of Peru, especially in the poorest.
Keiko, Fujimori's daughter, is a very popular member of parliament in Peru and might try to use her father's sentence to attract sympathizers in the face of her own presidential ambitions two years from now. Some polls place the young woman- who received more votes than any other member of the Peruvian Congress in 2006- at the head of the electoral preferences. In fact, tens of Fujimori sympathizers have congregated outside the seat of the tribunal to show their support for the ex-president.
