Hello all,

I should begin by clarifying that ProZ.com does not outsource, but is rather a platform where language professionals can meet clients and vice versa. The API is simply one more means through which this contact can take place, like the translator directory (and is in fact a sort of extension of the directory and its search functions). This FAQ http://www.proz.com/faq/163672#163672 outlines how the API works, and a full set of FAQs and documentation on the API can be seen at http://www.proz.com/faq/tpx_api.html

If you have set your minimum rates in your profile (even if you keep them invisible to the public) but still receive offers which include a rate below your minimum, please let staff know through the support system so that they can properly look into it.

In addition, those who wish to receive no contact at all through the API may opt out at http://www.proz.com/?sp=settings_tpx_api

I hope this helps clarify.

Kind regards,

Lucia

It is interesting to see that this thread has disappeared from the first two pages Dec 30, 2013

at least, did you notice?

Anyway, I have now opted out from API (I was not aware at all of this issue), thank you for bringing this up, Neil!

Thank you Neil Dec 31, 2013

for bringing this to our attention. I'd also like to know why this thread appears to have been removed from the home page?

The thread has no special settings Dec 31, 2013

This thread has no special settings. In other words, it should appear in latest posts (I see it in the first page) and on the home page if your home page settings are correct (according to my personal settings, I see it on the home page in fourth position).

Lucia

Appears on neither Dec 31, 2013

It's not showing on my home page or on the first (or second) page of current Forum discussions. The top "Money matters" topic there is "Rates going down".

Until yesterday, I saw it on the homepage Dec 31, 2013

(first page of forum discussions). Then it disappeared completely. I didn't change any settings in the meantime. So, there are at least two of us that don't see it any more. Strange, isn't it?

The post by an agency owner complaining about a negative BB comment (which has already been removed) is still there, but this topic has completely disappeared from view, even though it's just as recent. I checked my home page and two other pages of forum postings and it's nowhere to be seen.

You'll find it on the "Money matters" forum but it would certainly seem that staff have chosen to remove it from the main listings. Funny that.

Title changed Dec 31, 2013

I don't know if it has something to do with it, but the thread title changed. The first two pages title was "PROZ OUTSOURCING CPN MEMBERS AT 0.06€ /WORD" and then the title appeared as "ProZ.com outsourcing CPN members at 0.06€/w (Staff: ProZ.com is not an outsourcer, but a platform)"

When the change took place, it might have affected the views for some of you, but I am still receiving email updates. I haven't checked the forum list, though.

Settings is the wrong thing for staff to check Dec 31, 2013

Checking our settings certainly won’t do any good, as we have not changed them. (The most we might have done (as I have) was probably to subscribe to the thread.) Unless, of course, someone with admin privileges, without our (and your) knowledge, has changed them en masse without asking us, which is, I hope, rather improbable, since that would imply either a rogue staff or the system having been hacked, neither of which are comforting scenarios.

The other possibility would be a system bug, which Luximar reckons might be related to the title change. If this is the case, we can state three observations:

  1. Some letters have been lowercased, but normally this would not cause any buggy behaviour.
  2. The new title contains additional special characters, which include a colon and a comma. The bug was caused by the inability of the system to properly handle either or both of these.
  3. The new title is much longer. The bug was caused by the inability of the system to anticipate long titles.

2 would be embarrassing, but 3 could be dangerous. I hope we are actually dealing with 2, or a 4 which I have not thought of, or a benign version of 3.
