Hello All,
I am a new member on this site. I wish to know a few things:
1. How can I get work faster. I am not a member yet, so I guess, I cannot bid.
2. How does the Invoicing, system work and how is Income tax handled?
Earlier, when I was affiliated with a translation agency, I used to get the Invoice showing Income tax already deducted and a cheque for the amount after deduction of the tax.

4. I am located in Sweden. Does that mean I need to add VAT or any other tax in the invoice and how will I know the rate?

The first thing you should know is that both ProZ.com (paying) members and non-members can quote on ProZ.com jobs and receive job offers via the freelancer directory. However, ProZ.com members have more visibility throughout the site, which means they attract more potential clients' attention than non-members.
So, to meet clients at ProZ.com, I invite you to consider applying the following strategies:
1. Become a ProZ.com member, as members are ranked ahead of non-members in the directory of freelancers and interpreters, http://www.proz.com/translator-directory/ , and are then more visible in searches. Visit this page to check your current directory ranking. Also, check the current membership campaign page to learn why there is no better time to upgrade than now: http://www.proz.com/membership/campaign (2013 Mid-year campaign: May 20 - Jun 20).
2. Specialize. Let potential clients know what your fields of expertise are by listing fields in your profile in order --your specialty fields must be ordered accordingly, earning KudoZ points in those fields and in your top language pair, providing details in your "About me", etc. More tips on how to show your specialization are available here.
3. Build a good profile, as your profile serves as your business card and directory listing, and it is the first impression of you that colleagues and potential clients will have when they find you at ProZ.com and when running web searches.
4. Earn KudoZ PRO points in your language pairs and fields of expertise, as this is how directory search results are ranked among the first group (members) and the second group (non-members). A few minutes of effort, a few times a month, may be all that is needed to boost your position in the freelancer directory.
5. Apply for inclusion in the Certified PRO Network, as becoming a Certified PRO will allow you to network and collaborate in an environment consisting entirely of screened professionals, including companies seeking the services of Certified PROs only. (it is extremely important though that all previous strategies are put into use, and that all required information is gathered, before applying for inclusion into the Certified PRO Network).

If you need to deduct taxes from your invoice created with the ProZ.com invoicing tool (e.g. for tax withholding done by your client), you can specify the tax percentage as negative amount in the tax settings form. This will cause that amount to be deducted from your invoice subtotal.
3. Also, non-members can only raise up to 5 invoices. Does that mean, you have to become a member after that, so that you can take further assignments?
You will have to become a ProZ.com member to continue using the invoicing tool, but you can still accept new job offers even as a non-member.
4. I am located in Sweden. Does that mean I need to add VAT or any other tax in the invoice and how will I know the rate?

Hi Mithila,
You need to mentally separate ProZ, which is only a forum for translators and translation jobs, from the business you would actually be running.
In Sweden this would probably mean that you would register an Egen Firma, and there is tons of information available through Skatteverket's Verksamt site, and places like NyföretagarCentrum. There you will be able to find out about things like taxation and VAT.
One more tip - you have stated your languages as German to English, but unless I am very much mistaken you aren't an English native speaker. As a professional translator, it's usual to translate only into your native language, otherwise your translation output is never quite right. So you may find that will help you obtain more jobs.

A lot goes into making a good translator, and most translators have good proficiency in both their main languages and many regularly translate in either direction.
If you are not native in the language, it only means you will have to work that much more harder to reach levels of proficiency adequate for translation in the target language. If you are equal to it, don't be deterred and translate into your non-native target language after you have reached the required proficiency.

As JaneD says, ProZ.com is only a platform to put us in touch with potential clients. They provide resources to help us to network, learn, develop..., but that's all. It's up to you to run your business (yes, it is that, even if it is a micro-business), and do everything in the way the Swedish authorities require you to do.

I had a look at it when it first came out and it looked useful (and it's improved since), but I already had all my invoicing procedure in place so I've kept with that. As a non-paying member, you can try it out and pick its brains; you'll need to pay to use it as your regular invoicing method. ▲ Collapse
