Site and web ranking benefits are directed first and foremost at full members. Partial members may benefit --partially!-- from the web visibility the site can provide, but if web visibility is an important factor for you, full membership is the way to go (along with the other winning strategies which are a complete profile, KudoZ PRO points in your top language pair(s) and field(s) of expertise, specialization and becoming a Certified PRO).

Google is not prevented from indexing non-members' and partial members' profiles, but since ProZ.com full professional members have more visibility throughout the site (they show first in the directory for instance), this leads to more Google indexing, meaning higher visibility for them not just within ProZ.com, but also outside the site.

I don’t want to be a hassle, but I’d just like to point out that, technically speaking, this argument does not make any sense.
If it does indeed make sense, then a more detailed (technical) explanation is warranted.

As explained in http://www.proz.com/faq/4442#4442 , when a client searches the directory for a translator or interpreter, s/he is presented with two sets of results: the first set consists of (paying) members, and the second (separate) set consists of non-paying registrants. Since directory search pages are indexed by search engines, members' profiles showing in results --always shown first-- are also indexed, having more visibility than non-member profiles. This is just a matter of how many times a page for a member or linking to a member's profile is loaded and so indexed, even when ProZ.com does not control search engine indexing (for information on Google indexing, just visit http://www.googleguide.com/google_works.html ).

Yes, but this is exactly why the explanation, as presented, does not make much technical sense. Google will (eventually) crawl all pages, and the order of how links are presented does not necessarily reflect the order how Google ends up indexing them. (And from my own experience the two do not in fact correspond.)
The way the pages are linked might have an effect on the ranking, but it has no effect on indexing per se.
PS: I’m going to stop commenting in this thread now, since I feel I’m being a hassle. But I wish to point out that the current standard explanation is unconvincing. There are lots of us here that do IT translation, which means a good number of us will know how Google works. A technically unconvincing explanation is not going to be adequate.

I did not really understand the explanation either. It seems to say that our profiles only get indexed when we turn up in a directory search. This doesn't make sense. Aren't all pages on the net indexed regularly?

the answer is this. I would like to post it here for future reference:

let's say that someone is looking for a translator in your language pair in the directory. The first page of results will show only paying members. The client looks at your profile. Let's say he stops there, before going on to find non-paying members in subsequent pages. In that case, your profile will have received a hit, it will have attracted more traffic than that of a non-paying member's. So it will appear higher up in Google searches (better ranking). If that client moves on to the next few pages until he sees non-paying members too, then your profile and a non-paying member's profile will have received the same traffic, and that will result in equal ranking.
Now if we talk about Google indexing, Google simulates a client's actions but it will not stop at paying members, it will go through all pages (it's what Ambrose said, that eventually Google will go through everything).
In other words, Google indexing will treat everyone equally. Google ranking is affected by how many people - and search engines - look at your profile; and the more visible you are on the site, the more people - and search engines - will look at your profile because there will be more links to it all over the site and it will attract more traffic.
You can be a non-paying member and post often in the forums. That will give you much more visibility (and eventually better ranking) than being a paying member that's not active on the site. ▲ Collapse
