I just received a contract offer that looks suspicious. I decided to not respond to this job offer. It has a lot in common with another message reported as scam on this discussion. I thought I should post it to have your opinion and to warn other translators.

Definitely a scam Sep 14, 2011

Disabled, poor English, unnecessary information, the tone...

These all ring a bell, don't they?

I've had a couple of dubious-looking offers Sep 14, 2011

via ProZ over the years, so after the last two, which came rather close together, I adjusted my settings so that people who aren't logged in can't send me e-mails. This was a while ago, so I've forgotten where it was, but I haven't had any problems since. Of course, it's possible that I'm missing some offers, but no serious outsourcer has any reason in the world not to be registered and logged in at ProZ before contacting a translator, imo.

Added on edit: Oh, yes, definitely a scam.

Me too. Totally agree.

As to the messages from not receiving any messages from non-logged in people, go to your profile, click the Setting tab, and you'll find Email preferences. There you can select your profile message preferences.

Also interesting that... Sep 14, 2011

the disabled entrepreneuer (who can't speak English) is having a long text translated from English to French for a project in New Mexico!

Sincerely
Michael

My friend, the obvious answer is that the translation is for New-Mexican French.

Contacted site support? Sep 14, 2011

Tania,
You wrote this person posted a job here, on ProZ and you responded to that.
Have you contacted ProZ support yet about this?
I am sure they would want to know so they could block this person from posting any more "jobs".
Thanks
Katalin

I knew it was a scam... Sep 14, 2011

there was no doubt about it. I have posted it here mainly to warn other people and to discuss about it. It was my first "translation" scam and I was angry because I really need jobs and receive fake ones is the last thing I want!

Thanks for your comments, funny and constructive.

Let's hope for real jobs and good clients now!

Needless to say, the poor English is a dead giveaway! I was tempted to write back and offer my services to edit his letter...

Yes, the poor English, the "disable", the tone, the absence of signature, etc.
I couldn't believe how similar it was to the one on the other discussion. Still, it's a good thing that it is all so obvious!

It's a scam, I recognize the sentences Sep 14, 2011

Bonsoir,

It's a scam, I recognize 4 sentences with the ++

I suffered this scam too and took it almost to it's end: after 1 week negotiations, prepayement of 4,000 Euros in AMEX traveller's checks, with a demand of refund of 3,000 Euros by Western Union;

They sent me the text since the beginning, it was a dummy thing about bar business. I found the identical file on Internet (it was supposed to be a strategic market research!)

the traveller checks were fake, fortunately I didn't cash them and I didn't send any money, but I lost money because I had no other translation job during the "negociations".

So definitely, don't accept that type of offer.

Good luck!

Marie
