Hi,

I am willing to have my ATA Membership just to increase my potential clients. Does such Membership can provide translators with more strong Credentials with new clients?

Thanks,

It can help you to get new clients, but most of the clients don't really know anything about these kind of organisations.

Have a great day!

Johannes

Clients via ATA May 18, 2010

The clients who tell me they found me through the ATA directory are generally foreigners in the U.S. who need personal documents or professional credentials translated for immigration or accreditation purposes. They've been told to find an ATA-certified translator, and so they search atanet.org.

As for ongoing corporate or agency clients, they're not generally searching the ATA directory. However, I get the impression that some of them took a chance on me because my resume lists multiple ATA certifications, which inspired confidence.

In short, the membership is paying for itself, but it's hard to judge to what degree I'm profiting from it.

Thank you Steven and Johannes May 18, 2010

Hi,

Thanks a lot Steven and Johannes for your appreciated opinion. In fact we have a proz seminar in Egypt in the last April and one of its sessions were about ATA, and I have been told that it is the first translation association all over the world.

Thanks,

I just search for agency and freelancer through words of mouths and local directories like YP. I didn't even know proz or ATA.

I also think my ATA certification in my main language pair is some reassurance to new customers. They seem to value this fact. In the case of American agencies, they clearly consider it a plus. I would definitely encourage any conscious translator to join ATA and try to become certified!

Just the membership doesn't mean much... Oct 29, 2010

...since anyone who is willing to pay the membership fee can become a member, regardless of translation skills (although, of course, not all potential clients know that). An ATA certification, however, does carry some weight, so I would recommend not just becoming an ATA member, but getting a certification.

My membership has paid for itself Oct 30, 2010

I've got a few assignment through ATA - enough to return what I've paid for it plus some extra.

However, do not expect a downfall of income once you join ATA. Consider a combination of different marketing methods. I would recommend to read "old" posts in "Getting Established" - it contains a lot of good advise.

Good luck to you!

ATA membership is a marketing crutch. Frankly, nobody cares about your ATA membership. On the bright side, they publish a decent magazine.

About membership Apr 13, 2011

I have found the website for about a year.

All your experiences are really helpful!

Thanks

During the spare time of the past years, I have been working as a part-time translator, mainly offering English/Chinese translation in mechanical and financial fields.
I wonder if I should be a paid member so that there will be more opportunities.
