I recently bought a new computer. I returned my Trados licence. I went to SDL's website to download all of the program files anew instead of moving my installation files from the old computer. I did this because I wanted to make sure I don't transfer buggy software and associated patches to the new computer but instead download the clean, updated install files. I did this because I wanted to make sure I don't transfer buggy software and associated patches to the new computer but instead download the clean, updated install files. I have installed everything, following all the instructions provided. Now, I have a working copy of SDL Trados 2007. There is one thing that bugs me, though.

I started Synergy, clicked on Create New Project and - bam! I got a totally empty popup with the title Error and Synergy crashed. I tried again, and this time, I didn't even get a chance to click on anything - I immediately got this popup:

The funniest thing about it is that, as opposed to this message, I can't even click OK or Cancel - even the error message crashes! I did, after several trials, succeed in clicking the Cancel button before everything disappeared, and here is what I got:

I searched the SDL knowledge base to absolutely no avail - all I found is information on how awesome Synergy supposedly is. My computer is brand spanking new (XP SP3).

I just have one question to SDL: are you planning to get Synergy to work soon for all those people who have paid for it? What will it take? FYI, in case you don't remember, it's been on the market for two years now...

Small piece of info... Feb 4, 2009

Hi Viktoria,
I could see from your previous posts that you're a very experienced user of Trados and other tools. So my suggestion is rather "teaching the eagle to fly", as we say in Czech.
But: have you made sure you have the latest versions of .NET and Java Runtime Environment installed? The entire Trados is a medley of these two technologies (plus the Microsoft Jet hybrid in MultiTerm).
No other suggesion, I'm afraid. Only try to reinstall... as usual.

I do have the latest versions Feb 4, 2009

Thanks for the encouragement, Stanislav. It is true that I am an experienced user of the package, but I am only a user, not a software engineer. This means I know my way around the software, provided it works as designed. Alas, it would seem that I would need to be a software engineer to get the Trados package to work as designed.

I do have the latest of all software needed to run Trados components. I am the kind of person who knows that often, when something doesn't work properly, a number of things need to be checked before reaching for the phone. I also never ask KudoZ questions until I have explored all other options. This is also why I mentioned that I checked the SDL knowledge base. I also did a forum search before posting. So, I think my only option at this stage is to have someone at SDL enlighten me.

I don't have a support agreement - I find that for an eagle that can already fly pretty well, it is a waste of money to buy flying lessons. I also find that it is a bit too much to ask of users to pay an extra fee just so that the software works as designed. If I were inexperienced and would need guidance, it would be OK to pay for a support agreement. But the issue isn't not having the ability to use the software - the issue is that the software doesn't work as designed. I have already paid for software meant to work as designed. I am not going to pay again.

JAVA error Feb 4, 2009

The JIT (Just-In-Time-Compiler) error should be from the Java Environment. I think it may be important in which order you (re)install the programs. I.e. start with JAVA. If you install the latest version of JAVA don't forget to:

1. Click Start and then select Control Panel from the menu. The Control Panel is displayed.
2. Double-click on Java. The Java Control Panel is displayed.

6. Reboot your PC.

An exception is typical when a link between two programs is corrupted. Don't be to hasty to blame Trados, it may be something wrong with your JAVA installation.

The very first thing the Trados installer installed was JRE. Are you telling me that Trados has me install a copy of JRE for nothing? Are they packaging a JRE version with their product that isn't even the right build for the product to function properly?

Is there any information on this on the SDL website?

Yes, I know Feb 4, 2009

The problem can be that you have two different versions of JAVA on you machine where they may interfere with each other (for instance, the situation often referred to as "DLL-hell"; DLLs conflicting with each other, as other DLL-versions of the "same" DLL haven't been removed).

Check in your control panel - removing programs.

It should be sufficient if you uninstall all JAVA-ocurrences, then reinstall TRADOS /w the JRE.

Not much about JAVA on SDL support-site, I am afraid.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to reboot after the uninstallation.

Why use Synergy Feb 5, 2009

In my case, my use for Synergy would be simply so I can assign TMs and TDBs to larger projects consisting of several files. Part of my work in between files would be automated this way and I would also be able to rest assured that I am using the right file version all over. It's a bit like using spell check. I can spell right, but spell check helps me to make sure I really did spot everything.

I don't think I need it for project management - I only have one resource to manage, which is me. I don't need better management than I already have. But in any case, since this is part of the package, I would like to at least be able to give it a test drive and see if it fits somewhere into my workflows, even if only partially.

I have to admit, though, that the idea of having one window to manage all my SDL stuff would be neat as well - don't you just hate navigating to components through the Start menu?

Latest Java, this could be "the" point Feb 5, 2009

Hi Viktoria,

Unless anyone from SDL support can be more helpful, do not rely on Trados using the latest version of Java. A colleague just had problems with Java 1.5 and Multiterm. The latest version is Java 6 update 11 (!).

You may have more than one Java version living in your PC "without" problems (even though some time ago I HAD problems with Multiterm and an old Java version that no one could solve).

If you want to select the Java version that will be used by default in your system you can try this.

- Go to the control panel.
- Look for a "Java" option
- A small dialog appears with several tabs and buttons. The exact layout depends on the Java version(s) you have installed (I have currently 1.4.0.2, 1.5.0.10, 1.5.0.16, 1.6)
- Look for something like a "Java" tab or an option to set up the application runtime, both for your user and for the system.
- This gives you a list of the versions available and which one is running by default.
- I would try version 1.4.x unless you find out that Synergy should work with a later one. [well, I just looked at mine and it says I'm using 1.5]

Maybe this helps,

... Synergy works on my computer, but I don't use it...

Ruth

Gave up on Synergy too Feb 5, 2009

I found Synergy adds no value to my use of Trados and takes up valuable CPU time, so once I realised I could start Workbench/TagEditor without it I stopped using it.

My own Trados glitches are:

Workbench crashes whenever I try to close it the normal way, so I now go into Task Manager and close down the process tree instead.

Every so often I am unable to clean a document I have translated in TagEditor. I get silly and variable error messages, the favourite

Every so often I am unable to clean a document I have translated in TagEditor. I get silly and variable error messages, the favourite one being that I am using an obsolete copy of Word (not true!). I have to open the source document in Word and pass it through Workbench that way again, which is a pain because it means any special symbols, superscripts etc plus a significant number of other segments have to be re-entered.

When Trados works, it can be a marvellous aid, when it doesn't it costs me many extra hours!

Incidentally, has anyone noticed any improvements on upgrading to the latest version? I have SDL Trados 2007 and am wondering whether upgrading will help or hinder me.

Try this... Feb 5, 2009

Hello Viktoria,

You may need to register your SDL Trados 2007 files to Windows by running the following file:

Please go to Start -> All Programs -> SDL International -> SDL Trados 2007 -> Trados and then run the "Register SDL Trados 2007.bat" file.

If this doesn't help then try deleting the server.xml file from the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\SDL Trados\Projects\Local

I hope this helps.
