Swedish term or phrase: åkerier
åkerier in the context of taxi services (i.e. not a freight forwarder or common carrier).

"förare och åkare"

I am guessing that "independent contractors" is meant here; but perhaps it is something else.

(drivers and) operators
Explanation:
I'm sure the business model is you have 'drivers' who are more or less employees or contractors, and operators who own the vehicles, but will also work as 'driver' of their own vehicle. So the simple example is one operator (owner) with two drivers each taking an 8 hour shift to keep the vehicle running 24 hours/day ... more or less. Maybe we're talking three 6 hour shifts or so, but that's the idea.

Then you'll have a 'taxibolag' or a 'taxiförening' where more than one 'åkare' have formed a kind of joint venture to pool resources for related services (phone, maintenance, etc.). So these åkare still own their own vehicles, but jointly own the company or association.

Surf around this reference, one of these Swe taxi companies have an Eng website to compare.

Asker: Thanks. It may be as simple as that!

agree  Agneta Pallinder: It also fits with the development history of the "åkeri" in the more general sense of haulage company.
