nitrogen-fixing Explanation: It's a typo, it should read "kvävfixerande" (present participle, not past participle). It means that they have the capacity of converting nitrogen gas in the air into biologically usable nitrogen salts (nitrates or ammonium salts). Most organisms lack this ability and are dependent on nitrogen salts in their environment. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 mins (2006-06-01 17:12:54 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Sorry, I made a typo myself when commenting on the typo of your original. It should really read "kvävefixerande". A couple of references regarding "nitrogen-fixing": http://helios.bto.ed.ac.uk/bto/microbes/nitrogen.htm http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/nitrogen.htm |
