Thanks for that info., Eileen. At our school in Southern England, we used to play both rugger (rugby) and football (soccer), but used the word of soccer to distinguish the latter. PS - the schools run by British football clubs are called Soccer Academies e.g of Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool FC, especially abroad in South Africa and Oz where an Academy of Football would be misunderstood http://soccerschools.liverpoolfc.com/news/lfc-international-...

@Adrian MM: In the UK we use "FOOTBALL" much more than "Soccer" and if you google you will find a mountain of football magazines, and almanacs.

I assume soccer is not your favourite sport, as opposed to rugby football, American football or even Australian rules football - all with lower supporters' violence and hooliganism levels for socio-psychological reasons that we need not canvass here. If someone with an Irish, Scottish, Welsh or Aussie name mentioned football to me, I would assume he or she was talking about 'rugger'. Whilst this distinction seems to be lost on London 'football' supporters, publications are still called soccer albums and almanacs...

Thank you for clarifying that point, as I said before, football is NOT my favourite sport.

I much prefer tennis. :-0)) Too much violence for my taste in football, as I remember from Newcastle, where I studied nursing, and how the supporters reacted if their team lost the match, breaking shop and car windows and fighting the supporters of the oponent team. Horrible!!

The squad refers to the roster of players chosen to play for their "team" in a league or competition. For example, in the English Premier League, each team can have a squad of up to 25 players who are eligible to play at any given time, of which 11 will be chosen to start a match, with a certain number of reserve players on the bench (five, I think), available for the three possible substitutions during the match.

I'd say "shirt numbers" if it's a specific match, "squad numbers" if you're talking about the season in general. No need for "definitives" or "finals"
