agree  Steve Derry: Yes. Have checked with someone who works in that field. Definitely to 'tap a phone' (in UK slang)

  -> Thanks Derrio, I know it definitely exists in the UK ( that's where I'm from ;) ) but I wouldn't call it slang if it is used on the news, in newspapers, etc....colloquial maybe, but slang no ;)
