As far as I know, opening a can of worms, or opening Pandora's box, is bringing up a subject that was better off left alone, because it's the beginning of a long list of problems. A bit different than "abrir el tarro", which I take it to mean revealing something that was a secret, and should've remained a secret because it exposes someone in a bad light.
