Spanish term or phrase: mendigos de lujo.
This is the context : Estatuas humanas se niegan a ser consideradas como mendigos de lujo.

Any suggestions please? All I can come up with is luxurious beggars or beggars of luxury which is far too literal I think.

Explanation:

neutral  philgoddard: I don't think lavished or extravagant are appropriate, but "glorified" fits the context perfectly

disagree  philgoddard: No, the Spanish is saying that they're basically the same as beggars. PS: From your reply, I think you've misunderstood "estatuas humanas". They are people who dress up, often cover themselves in paint, and pretend to be statues.

-> and in English you can not link an inanimate object to beggers. It says ESTATUAS HUMANAS.Thanks.

any richer than...

Explanation:
Any, or no richer than, any other beggars. A comparison or parallel the author is trying to point out. - That they consider themselves as much of beggars as any other beggar, is reversed in my answer, but the meaning is the same in English. Or so I thought.

agree  Bubo Coroman (X): I love "upmarket beggars"
4 mins
-> Thanks Deborah! That's the first thing that came to my mind :-))

agree  philgoddard: I agree with Deborah, but I don't think "upper class" is quite right. The statues are denying that earning money in this way is simply begging in disguise.
15 mins
-> Thanks philgoddard. I also prefer the first option but "Upper class" also defines the concept.
