Your Honors, Your Excellencies Explanation: Your Honor se usa en los EEUU para jueces y alcaldes y cosas por el estilo; en otros lugares se usa Your excellency, para por ejemplo embajadores; usualmente he traducido dependiendo del texto a Su Merced. |

your highnesses Explanation: An option. Here it is used in a similar snide way: Damn it's hard to figure out your policies. They seem to be post-rational. ... Of course, if they don't have JOBS that PAY then they wouldn't be able to do that but I guess that is a pedestrian concern to your highnesses. And another: hen the liberal Supreme Court told President Bush he couldn’t torture terrorists, he didn’t let that stop him. The Democrats, however, would have just said, “yes, your highnesses” and smoked some marihuana while terrorists ran rampant ... your ladyships/lordships Explanation: The formal mode of address in modern Spanish, usted, sometime abbreviated to Ud. or Vd., is in fact a shortened version of vuestra merced, which means literally "your honour". The expression "su merced" is still used in parts of Latin America as the way of saying "you" to a stranger (for example, in the countryside area around Bogotá, Colombia). In Cervantes' time this was the everyday way of addressing a stranger politely, and for this reason you should NOT translate it here as "your honour", which would sound forced and stilted. Nor should you try and use archaic forms of English (e.g., thee or thou), since your task is to translate the text into current, not mock-Elizabethan, English. You will however, need to catch the comic, exaggerated, nature of this dialogue. Reference: http://www.cus.cam.ac.uk/~egk10/trans/Cervantes-hints.html |
