Spanish term or phrase: el núcleo definidor
De esta forma, XXXX se integra en el núcleo definidor de la mayor instalación científica europea, al frente de un equipo que contará con la colaboración de XXXX.

The article in itself is about nuclear science but here I have understood "nucleo" to mean "the most important part"; I can't seem get the meaning of "definidor" across though. Can anyone help?

the defining core
Explanation:
I would try to preserve the clever metaphorical reference to nuclear jargon.

If this is some mega-science thing like CERN or the LHC, then there is a team of apical scientists who basically call the shots regarding the goals of the project or projects, hence “The Defining Core”. It sounds a lot like this is about a group that will be joining that team.
