what is the preferred US spelling of metre/meter. Certainly in the UK "meter" is solely a device for measuring, while all my US dictionaires offer me both "meter" and "metre" as the unit of measurement .

Explanation:
You may prefer to wait for an answer from a native US English speaker (I speak UK English myself), but note that if you select US English spellchecker in MS Word, "metre" and "kilometre" are marked as errors.

agree  Laurel Clausen: Yes, we like to end words in "-er" rather than "-re" - definitely not metre/kilometre! (US dictionaries often include UK spellings, though)
