Having a bit of trouble trying to come up with something that flows nicely here :)

Anticipo una vuelta a las economías más locales y de pequeña escala en los próximos años. Preveo que las empresas deberán evolucionar hacia modelos más descentralizados en los que simplifiquen al máximo su cadena de valor. Estimo que una parte importante del desafío al que se enfrenta nuestro sector pasará también por entender y usar de manera preferente los canales de relación que el mundo digital pone a nuestra disposición.

I think this is the idea behind the phrase, but perhaps there are better ways to say it..."if we feel the winds are blowing in that direction", etc.

Parece que está hablando de circunstancias económicas, por eso creo que se puede decir "...if the situation compels us..." o "...if the situation seems to be compelling us to do so..."

Probablemente yo lo traduciría:

We can plan all these changes in a gradual way, if the situation seems to be compelling us to, or we can attempt to face them head on, in a more traumatic way, when there is no other choice.
