I am translating (Spanish to English) a paper concerning a mathematical model involving a global attractor in a chemostat to explain predator-prey interaction. I don’t get the que toma un promedio part.

Nuestro modelo contempla una interacción entre una fuente primaria de nutrientes para una población que a su vez constituye la presa para otra población depredadora situada en el último eslabón de la cadena. Asumimos que la población depredadora depende de la historia pasada de la presa por medio [de]un retraso distribuido que toma un promedio de la respuesta funcional de Michaeli-Menten de la presa, y que el nutriente y la población comparten una relación dinámica dependiente del pasado.

What does "que toma un promedio" mean? ¿un promedio de qué? that assumes an arithmetic mean? To me, an average of a response does not pass muster. I just don't get the idea of what kind of "average” is being discussed. Can you give me a hint? Thank you all for your kind attention.
