Science - Mathematics & Statistics / Water analysis
Spanish term or phrase: exponente de 10 respectivo
It'm translating the results of a WATER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION CONTROL ANALYSIS. After a chart with all the results for pH, turbidity, free chlorine, etc., there is a note saying:

En los resultados expresados en notación científica; las cifras significativas se multiplican por el exponente de 10 respectivo.
Por ej. 1.2E+4 = 12000

If I remember my maths properly, I understand what it means but I am looking for the correct mathematical terms to use.

Thanks in advance

"As you can see, the exponent of 10 is the number of places the decimal point must be shifted to give the number in long form. A positive exponent shows that the decimal point is shifted that number of places to the right. A negative exponent shows that the decimal point is shifted that number of places to the left."

The exponent of 10 tells you how many places to move the decimal point to the right for positive exponents or left for negative exponents. These rules come in especially handy for writing very large or very small numbers.

agree  neilmac: I believe you. What I don't understand is the + sign (1.2E+4), but even if it was explained to me, I'd probably still struggle to grasp it.

  -> That's a good point Neil, I think it's unnecessary (and unusual).
