You want to be careful when using "average" and "mean". In most cases they mean the same thing, but that´s when you are dealing with the arithmetic mean as opposed to a geometric mean.
I would stick with mean rather than average, just to me more exact, because otherwise the text would have said "entre dos PROMEDIOS muestrales", then you would want "average".
