Science - Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) / Wood defect
Spanish term or phrase: Acañonado
From a Spanish document stating the specifications for supplying wood sleepers. In the document glossary, the term is defined as:

Hueco que se produce en la cabeza del Durmientes de Madera Dura por pudrición de la médula.

"Crack" alone is not correct, as this is defined previously as a separate, more general term.

Explanation:
Although I am not suggesting this word with total certainty, I would like to think that a Mexican University (Forestry Science Division) would not publish an erroneous translation of the term. The translation and definition are on the 4th page of the pdf document at the link I have provided. It is a glossary of terminology in this field.

Although this was not the term I used finally, as I found it specifically for railway sleepers (rupture), I am sure this would be acceptable

Cellar Rot Fungus (Coniphora puteana)
The brown cellar rot fungus is one of the most important wood-destroying fungi is buildings, besides dry rot. It does not only occur in buildings, but can be found in stored timber, wood with ground contact (such as utility poles, railway sleepers) and wooden structures (like bridges). It attacks both coniferous and deciduous timbers.

Type
Coniophora puteana, rotting (wet)
Symptoms
Thin black-brown strands on surface, cracking of timber
Susceptible Conditions
Damp environments with high water retention
Biological degradation
Biological degradation is an inevitable consequence of the organic nature of timber. Both rotting and non-rotting fungi can affect timber ((Table 8.1).
Wet rot can occur when in the in-service moisture content is more than 20%. The in-service moisture content can vary throughout sections and structures, depending upon the service environment. Wet rot is by far the most likely form to be encountered in the timbers of a bridge.
