racing suit Explanation: Confirmation of the sport would help, but in F1 racing they are suits (or overalls) The first fire-retardant racing suit was manufactured by the Indianapolis company J.B. Hinchman over 80 years ago. Conceptually, the suit has changed little over those eight decades. The idea is still to provide protection from fire. However, today's suits bear little resemblance to their early counterparts. High-tech materials, proprietary stitching patterns, and fashionable designs not only set you apart in the winner's circle, but also save your life on the track. |

one-piece racing suit Explanation: Lowish confidence because you seem to be talking fashion, whereas the "real thing" is all about safety - and the sponsors, of course. For bikes and sidecars (the latter is what I was desperately hanging onto in my misspent youth), the best term is "racing leathers". There's really no need to specify "one-piece" - nobody would ever race with the risk of a bare midriff. For cars (been there too), the term is "racing suit" or, if you don't feel the need to talk it up, "racing overalls". Again, they wouldn't be anything but one-piece. "Racing suit" will actually do for either - made of leather for bikers and special fire-retardant Nomex material for drivers. But for fashion, who knows what they'd call them? |
