Spanish term or phrase: "Director A.I. del Registro Judicial"
Aparece en un certificado policial de Costa Rica. No puedo encontrar lo que significa "a.i.". Será por "asuntos institucionales", o "adjunto, agregado... interino"??? Es para Canadá.

Explanation:
It is most definitely NOT "Internal Affairs"; neither can we solve it by turning the letters around, until we know what they stand for. In many documents of Costa Rica these initials appear, and in connection with the most diverse areas, not just police matters, so we must rule out "Internal Affairs". In these Costa Rican documents, the initials appear in lowcase, never capitalized, and this called my attention; also, not always in connection with a person, also with an office [Secretaría]. Please check the references cited below.

Moreover, this seems to be a uniquely Costa Rican thing. But what I DID find out, is that it is not translated at all: it appears "tel quel" in the Costa Rica U.S. Embassy news site, both in Spanish and in English. I am just citing below the English reference. So, people, I would leave it EXACTLY like that. If the U.S. Embassy does not translate it.....why should we?

JUST DAWNED ON ME. Why the U.S. Embassy does not translate "a.i.". That's because it is NOT Spanish, it is Latin. "ad interim". And that is also the explanation why it is lowcase and not capitalized. Something like the better known "i.e.", or "v.g.".
NOW I'll be able to sleep....it kept nagging me, I tell you.

Without more context, it is really difficult to determine what A.I. means specifically in this case; however, what we do know, is that the word order is different. Hence, in an abundance of caution, we could simply reverse the word order to match English, without making it more specific in English than it is in Spanish.
