macrostate

Explicación:
The term appears to be used in the same way as 'macroestado', even though it's far more more frequent in physics/thermodynamics. The usage would appear to be rather biased.

Coincido  philgoddard: Yes, it's biased, and I think the translation will look as odd as the original.

macronation

Explicación:
Obviously what lies behind this term is what is conventionally called regional nationalism. Spain is a "macroestado" from the point of view of regional nationalists, mostly Catalans and Basques, of course, but also some others.

In the website Phil has cited, these people usually refer to their regions (to use the conventional term) as "micronaciones". And in English the usual terms used are "micronation" and "macronation".

It must be said that in the recent furore over the Catalan Estatut, the point of contention was the use of the term "nation" rather than "state". In the preamble to the draft Statute, which the Constitutional Court eventually threw out, the Catalans claimed to be a nation; they didn't claim to be a state.

Of course you could argue that since "macroestado" rather than "macronación" has been used in Spanish, we should use "macrostate" rather than "macronation" in English, and I see the logic of that; but I since the latter is much more usual than the former among those who think and write like this, I'd be inclined to go with "macronation".

"A macronation is what some micronationalists call recognized, sovereign and independent states. This term is used more often than previously mentioned terms, because it represents fully recognized nation or a UN member."

It looks to me as though "macrostate" is normally applied to things like the EU, comprising a group of nation states. Its use here applied to Spain is a bit anomalous.
