¿Alguna idea mejor?

Gracias.

was by preference inclined towards selective logging/harvesting
Explanation:
selectiva en el sentido de que se selectaron los mejores ejemplares, mientras dentro de un sistema sostenible me parece que hablarían de "selective thinning", es decir cortar árboles jóvenes para que los demás puedan alcanzar su máxima altura

was more inclined towards picking and choosing the trees to be harvested / logged

Explanation:
"was more inclined towards picking and choosing the trees to be harvested"
"was more inclined towards picking and choosing the trees to be logged"

In order to best capture the meaning here, it may be helpful to slightly reword the phrase as follows:

(1) For the word "preferiblemente," English has a short and sweet Anglo-Saxon word "rather" which usually works just fine:

http://www.dict4.com/1/?q=preferiblemente
http://www.dictionarist.com/rather

But the phrase "was rather inclined towards" is hardly used in English (if you Google it in quotes, it gets very few hits with the meaning needed in this context) and the phrase "was inclined rather towards" gets even fewer hits (just one!).

So it's probably best to go one step further and reword "rather" to "more" and translate "se inclinaba preferiblemente por" as "was more inclined towards" - which is a common English phrase:

http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q="was m...

(2) Now for the rest of the phrase "explotación selectiva" - as you pointed out, they're not talking about the sustainable practice of "selective harvesting/logging" here - they're talking about selecting the **best** trees!

There is a good English idiom "to pick and choose" which conveys this idea very well:

"pick and choose: to take only what you want from a group"
